They were pretty good, but they really sucked as jefferson starship.

classic rock is great, my faves are queen, led zep, thin lizzy and fleetwood mac.

i think the reason people can still get into classic rock is because of the songwriting is so good compared to what we have today.

queen are the best band in terms of songwriting as all four members have written numerous classics and countless songs that havent got the exposure they deserved

Good, but i don't know about the best, the beatles had soome great songwriting going for them. The reason i say that is because technically they weren't all that great, so they didn't have as much to work with and they still managed to make amazing songs. However i consider all the bands i like to have excellent songwriters (why else would i listen to them?).

oh yes, alot of their later albums had alot of overlooked gems on them. the only one i wasnt as big on was "innuendo", there were a handful of good tracks...but probley the worst of the era. Made in Heaven was just incredible, but im really partial to A Kind of Magic and The Miracle. :) i still listne to the early years more than anything, but i think Queen's sound in the 80's was one of a kind...they used synths to their advantage for sure and i like how they all wrote as a band, something not seein early on in the band.

^ His early stuff wasn't bad.

You have to think, music isn't all about talent. It's about that, song writing, expression, attitude, ect...

And Ozzy had some of that.

I do aggree that he was very much carried by Sabbath and by the members of his solo band. Hes more of a figurehead, like the queen of england...dosnt have much real power but the people would be lost w/out her...its the same with Ozzy, his voice works for Sabbath better than any of the others, even though Dio's voice is far superior, and Ozzy's role he created for heavy metal is unmatchable. leave it at that.

Complete Jimi Hendrix exp collection
Complete Van Halen.
Complete The Who

Some Beatles
Some Allman Brothers

Being a huge fan and knowing all their albums quite well, I'd say Who's Next is one of my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, it's still great, but doesn't have a great meaning. Like Tommy, it's gives a fabulous story, and is actually about the problems Pete Townsend was having. Very similiar to varous other Who albums. So what I'm trying to say is that it's great, yet overrated in my opinion. It's like a greatest hits album.

Classic rock days till the eighties is when the best musicians were. Now all modern music sux, especially emo posers like good charlet and simple plan, rap and heavy metal crap. Jimmy Page from Led Zepplin, Angus Young from Ac Dc, John Bonmon, Jimmy HEndrix Clapton, and NEil PEart were some of the best musicians. Cream showed Clapton at the height of his guitar playing, when he got into solo albums he focused to much on the vocals and his playing lost alot of luster, though many good tracks came out of his solo works, he had some unforgetable licks when he was focusing on just being a guitar revolutionary instead of a singer/songwriter. thats how i see it.

I don't think I've seen any mention of Wishbone Ash anywhere here. I can't be the only one who likes them, can I?

If you like 70's rock, this is a band you have to listen to. Not very heavy, more progressive, and is really great. Dual guitar leads, excellent bass work, just all round great rock. I recommend checking out 'Argus', (widely considered to be their best album). And the remaster contains a great live version of 'Phoenix'.

Alot of people are stating how they don't feel Kiss were very imporant in classic rock. Kiss brought the fun back into rock and roll - an alteration of a Gene Simmons Quote. Classic Rock is not only about the music its about the performance. Kiss brought rock closer to being mainstream with its catchy riffs. You can forget Kiss, i ask people if they have heard of people like led zeppelin. They say no, i say what about kiss. They say something along the lines of "The guys with the funny makeup". I mean, how can you forget Kiss? That wasn't too biast, even if im seeing Kiss on the 8th of May :D

Anyway, as you could probably of guessed I LOVE classic rock. For school we have to do a speech, so I'm doing it on Classic Rock, more pacifically Led Zeppelin and Kiss (Stupid Time limit, should of seen my lists of bands i wanted to do :D).

Anyone a fan of Eric Claptons solo stuff? I consider it Classic Rock/Blues, A bit softer then most classic rock though.

I expect the kiss concert to be awesome, i bought a Kiss top and im getting my face painted like Ace Frehley :D (Although it will be Tommy Thayer at the concert). I was so ecstatic about going, not many bands come to Australia, and when they do not many travel to Perth, they all go to the eastern states :(

To finish my post off, Anyone own any cool Classic Rock music dvds?

P.S: Has anyone mentioned Guns' n' Roses? I consider them on the Heavier side of Classic rock, even though they have some soft stuff.

I really dislike their attitudes, they had a few big hits and put on a show and all of a sudden they start talking like they own the world, like they "saved rock and roll". Come on they weren't even the first to do the whole stage show thing, and their music itself is mediocre at best. If it weren't for their attitudes i might be able to stand them. Anyways thats my opinion, enjoy the concert though.

Kiss are absoutly wonderful in terms of listening to their music, but Paul and Gene i dislike for how they have handled the band. Both Ace and Peter are good genuine people who happened to both get out when it started getting bad and came back for the fans and realized that Paul and Gene had already turned so many fans away. Its useless to look at Kiss in that way, their music is still great and their live shows are fantastic...get over the fact that Paul and Gene are a bunch of money hungry fools...at least they admit it, when some performers im sure are the same way but keep it under the hood.

No, not really. I'd say I'd have to agree, the Black Crowes and Phish have a very classic rock type sound and attitude to their music. I also think Oasis had a classic rock type thing going on too.

The Black Crowes were a huge suprise in 1990. Sounding like a early 70's hard rock act, with modern technology, and a unique sound that was completly against what was big at the moment (glam rock, thrash metal, grunge). The Black Crowes were musically one of the most important bands of the last decade.

Badmoon, I gotta disagree with you on the "Phish is kind of Classic Rock" thing. They did get the torch passed on to from the Grateful Dead (classic rock) to keep the jam band genre going, but they are not a classic rock type of band. They are a sort of jazz oriented jam band but still combing tons of genres. They are a band that belong in the now. Do you get what I'm saying? Maybe I explained it bad? Basically they are not a classic rock type band, it's hard to explain. I agree with the Black Crowes though, they are a really good band who feature all the classic rock elements.

Phish is probably the most Classic Rock like band nowadays.

In regards to people nowadays only listening to the the likes of rap i think that they "aren't ready" for classic rock. We can't just shove Classic Rock in there faces and expect them all to love it. It should be more of an easing in process. Introduce them to a Rock band whos singer raps over rocking guitar riffs, with a thudding bass line. Ok, its not what we would consider Classic Rock but it helps them become one step closer to liking rock.

On to another topic, has anyone heard of the band Live? I quite like them, not really Classic Rock, but better then most bands at the moment. I suggest you check out All over you and heaven. Both pretty good songs. Kiss may not have the right thoughts in mind for some aspects, but you have to admit, there catchy songs and there ability to STILL be touring after so long is amazing. Ace Frehley is one of my favourite guitarists, and i loved Eric Carr and Peter Criss's drumming.

Another pretty cool band that you guys might like is Midnight Oil. Admitably the singer doesn't have the greatest voice but there music is pretty Classic Rock sounding to me, atleast some of there songs. I'll Reccomend 2 songs by them, Sometimes and My country.

Regards, Dave

Moonie's prediction
--------------------------

I believe soon enough laws will be getting tighter and tighter in the USA, and there will be a lot of controlling going on. Through this, Hip-hop, and other genres that occasionally use dirty language and visuals (As of now), will be frowned upon, and they will lose popularity, because they will be shown and heard uncommonly.

Soon, rock bands will be popping out of coffee house scenes, combining genres and making timeless music. Those band will speak of rebellion for peace, because of the on going war, and the goverment controlling others. And then rebellion for peace will begin. Through that other bands will come out trying to imiate the early bands, and so forth bands arise that have meaning, and much more to offer.

^ In very little detail

Speakeasies will be comon. You can relate these soon times to the 60's or maybe the early 20th century.

Heh thanks, sorry bout the long reads. I to believe rock will get more popular. I know alot of adults hate rap and such, and probably that wont effect their kids. I think the main reason kids like rap is because it comes across as cool. I think though they need to be more open to new music- maybe reading up on the 70's- when rock was cool and why it was cool.

Your comment about combining genres is what i believe will change the music scene. At first a combination of rap and rock like i stated in my previous post. But then i think there will be some other combinations, like techno and rock. Basically rock which can be danced to easier then some of the rock we have experienced (well some rock you can dance to).

I was, well not exactly "touched" but moved a bit by and event that happened recently. My friends little sister (she's 11) was having a party, so my friend invited me round. About half way through there was this little guy crying. We ask him whats wrong, he replies there not playing any good music. Only Britney Spears and stuff, and no good old music like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. (Ok he was crying about it, which was quite weird but you get my point). There is hope for the coming generation!. So we went to the DJ and asked for some AC/DC. He played a techno remix of Highway to Hell. Well the kid was sort of satisfied heh.

I think also kids need to go to rock concerts, to experience the atmosphere. I'm sure it is much better (and different) to a rap concert. I think this could change A LOT of views about rock music.

Edit: And another band reccomendation. Im not sure if you guys will of heard of them but check out the John Butler Trio. They blend rock, blues, and reggae quite nicely (not so much blues tho) and are worth checking out. They had a hit over here (Australia) called "Zebra". Worth checking out definetly.

A big reason why classic rock was less popular a few years ago was because it was the "rebel againsted your parents time". If a person's parents listened to a band it was "soooooooo uncooooooooool lolz". That is where the whole Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot junk came from. Now that that is slowing down bands like The Darkness are trying to bring back classic rock (not like the darkness is half as good as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Ac/dc etc...).

Classic rock will havre a comeback and the guitar solo will once again become a must for any popular band.

I'll check ween out morbid, they were in a guitar world magazine i have. Yeh DVG, the guitarist slides around with an object on his finger, gets a good sound. They aren't really classic rock, but you might consider them it- They sound like there influenced alot by reggae and blues, but they keep the whole rock feeling with it. Plus the lead singer has cool dreads :D. Anyway I think although the Darkness may not be classic rock, or atleast not "good" classic rock, they are supporting the cause of the likes of us trying to bring back Classic Rock.

Anyway DVG, worth checking out, not exactly Classic Rock but it sounds like it is heavily influenced by some Classic Rock.

Okay, here I'm going to list bands that are lesser known in today's Classic Rock craze. Everyone who's favorite Classic Rock bands are The Beatles, The Who, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Kiss, Pink Floyd, and Aerosmith, should read this. I'm not going against them, I'm just trying to add introduce some more fabulous Classic Rok bands to widen horizons. Rock Not Roll, Rock n Roll, Frailed, Voodoo, DVG, and B0nzo can add on to these.

The Grateful Dead - A band that is famous for adding many genres to a mellow saphisticated arragment including intertwining guitars, dual drumming, and so forth. In each album you can sense a different influence, though they usually stick to Country, Bluegrass, and Psychedelia. A good portion of their songs are old covers, or written with references involving old literature and stories. They have been known to do long jams, with fantastic improvisation. Time period = Mid 60's - Mid 90's.

The MC5 - A band based on the ideas of a man named John Sinclair, who used the Detroit band as his voice. Their main purpose other than music was to preach the idea to rebel for peace. They music is fast, edgey, and sharp edged. The greatest portion of their albums are live, which they are known for. They supposibly greatest album Kick out the Jams shows influence of R&B. The album titled song also opens up with the famous "Kick out the jams mother*****r!!". Time period = Late 60's - Early 70's.

Actually, I always felt grunge was as close to a real rock revival as we've gotten in the past couple decades (other than a few bands here and there like the Crowes.) You can hear a huge classic rock influence in bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc. Not to mention the stoner rock genre spawned by it, bands like Kyuss and so forth. Both of these genres were heavily influenced by Zeppelin, Sabbath, Beatles, MC5, Blue Cheer, and the like.

Anybody here dig Queens of the Stone Age?

Interesting that you brought up the MC5...I'm actually old enough to remember when they first came out (which shows you how old I am). They were definitely wild and unique, to say the least. John Sinclair was a radical poet/activist in the Ann Arbor - Detroit area...was behind a lot of student protests at the University of Michigan (and if I remember right, was one of the organizers of the original "Hash Bash" on the UofM campus back in the early 70's). He spent more time in jail than Courtney Love. And "Kick out the Jams" was like a national anthem for radicals. When he yells, "Kick out the jams, mother*******!", let me tell you, it didn't go unnoticed by the powers that be.

John Sinclair is still around...toned down somewhat but still kicking major butt when he has a reason to.

Anyway, here's my list - well a partial one anyway

The Beatles, The Band, Dire Straits, The Who, Bob Seger, Little Feat, Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys, Pink Floyd, Skynyrd, The Moody Blues, Creedence, early Stones, Warren Zevon, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer...

As I said, that's only a partial list...

Mind if i add two bands?
Velvet Underground- Combining a very interesting sound, with guitars working well, and the singer has a pretty unique sounding voice. Some nice Rhythms, probably one of my more "funky" sounding Classic Rock bands, a bit of a pop influence and jazz influence if you ask me... there songs differ quite a bit You will like it if you like (in my opinion): The Who

Yardbirds:
Probably best known for their many famous guitarists that have been in there bands and the fact that Led Zeppelin were orginally going to be called "The new yardbirds", there lineup had at time Jeff Beck on guitar, Eric Clapton on guitar and Jimmy Page on guitar (not all at once mind you), Chris Dreja on Rhythm Guitar and then bass, Keith Relf with soothing vocals and Paul Samwell Smith on bass. Definetly worth checking out! You would like the Yardbirds if you like: Led Zeppelin, perhaps even Van Halen (but then again maybe not)

My 2 cents, sorry quite rushed if there is any mistakes.

EDIT: Anyone who read my post before my edit, sorry. I wrote in 2 minutes, got band names wrong, and therefore wrote a review for a totally different band which was wrong for it as well. Ok its partially corrected, sorry about that guys.

Perhaps, but its not just, the Darkness, its the general vibe, i mean, take the movie school of rock for example, i havnt met one person who didnt like that movie, and Guns N' Roses released a new greatest hits album (not officially sanctioned, but what the hell), Velvet Rovolver may well revive the hoards of Gn'R fans out there if they make it big, Hell, Jimi Hendrix's cousin is releasing a new CD sometime in the next year or so, and i've heard him, he can really play (although i dont expect too much, after all, whats in a name?)

But you get the drift, i can even see it happening, alot of me frineds (girls in particular) are turing to stuff like Metallica and Led Z. Wehter they do it because its the 'cool' thing to do? i dont know. But the fact is, i think its happening, and i hope it does.

MMM yes Velvet Revolver are good, as you said i liken them to gun's n roses. You guys have a classic rock station! In perth we dont even have a rock station. We have an alternative one, but its pretty crap :( One thing im starting to notice about classic rock compared to nowday rock and music with guitars in, is that guitars used open chords and bar chords when they play. Nowdays all you see in most genres in power chords, which have NOWHERE near the same "feeling" to them as open chords. Also, you dont see many songs not involving a girl, and certainly none in the likes of "Kashmir" or "Hey Joe" I think the reason is partially for a lack of creativity, and for the worry that they won't sell records.

I think the main thing that is needed for music nowdays, is the ability to sell. It also needs to have a "good" videoclip, usually a provocative one. This generally means, that it needs to be catchy, usually repeditive, and most music that is sold is by recognized artists. Not many people are prepared to listen to a new artist, or expand there horizons.

Would you guys Consider Bon Jovi classic rock?

Ok , pardon my explinations (heh, because i'm a french student i almost said explications, and then realized that's nto a word in english.) I'm not so good at describing music but i shall do my best. These aren't the HUGE bands but they weren't unheard of either so many of you may know them already, but maybe i'll post some good old canadian secrets later.

Supertramp: absolutely amazing band. Incorporate more than your average rock band, more orchestral/jazz instruments are used. Good for vocals and lyrics, but be prepared for nice long instrumentals and good song structure. Best knwon for their hits "the logical song" and "Dreamer". My recomendations (albums) breakfast in America, Crime of the century. (their music doesn't really sound like sopme will expect from the name)

Steeppenwolf: Here's a great sounding rockband, canadian too. Best known for their hit born to be wild. I really like the vocals with this band, not the most technically demanding but they sound great and fit the music perfectly. In terms of style there's nothing too standoutish about them, but their sound really is a nice one, band molds together well. Not hard rock, but also not as light as alot of stuff the band finds a good, mellow, yet exciting middleground (sorry if you didn't understand that last bit).

BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) - here's some nice upbeat music for you, somewhat reminiscent of the guess who (surprise surprise (hint: take a look at the name)). The guys have been described as relatable, just your average guy wearing their blue jeans, except they can make great music. And the relatibility really comes through in their sound, which is a bit on the lighter side, more upbeat, not soft, but light. I'd say it's some good easy listening, good picker upper songs. Biggest hits include Taking care of business, You ain't seen nothing yet and Let it Ride.

Hey, has santana been mentioned in this thread? his old stuff was great, not so much a fan of his new stuff, some if it's good but some is not, great guitarist though.

If you havent heard his solo albums (ex: stranger in this town) i suggest checking them out, for good Bon Jovi songs have a listen at "homebound train" and "klay your hands on me", very well laid out leads and a great strat tone.

Not completey, but I'd just like to add that they are a great band, but get a bad rap because of their look.

No, I think they get a bad rep because of their cheesyness. I couldn't care less about how they looked, I just don't like their music.

What's everyone's favorite Yes album? I was just listening to "Close To The Edge" today and it reminded me of how good Yes were\are. That album pretty much defines the Progressive rock genre for me. There's not one dull moment IMO.

Among middle class English youths rock has always been the mainstream. However you still get rap and garage **** all over the place due to the massive amount of chavs modern Britain has. However, old school rock is definatly experiancing a revival. However the problem is the rock world is so divided. Theres so many different genres, girls who like good music are almost impossible to find, as they all seem to love corporate driven punk bull****.

Alot of them were "stolen" but i think it was more the idea than the actual song, i'm sure they didn't just copy someone elses song, they might have done variations on it though and called it original.

Nice and bluesy, great drumming, bassing and of course guitar playing. And there's one part on the track "The Power of Love" (I believe that's it's name) that just blows me away. It's to hard to explain, but I'll try. It's a part where Miles hits the snare a few times fast, and then Cox does a fast yell, and at the exact time the yell ends, Miles whacks the snare and pounds the bass. And then Jimi goes into a great fast solo. It's crazy.

It's done live by the way.

The band includes

Jimi Hendrix - Guitar
Buddy Miles - Drums
Billy Cox - Bass

Classic rock bands, in my opinion, are like Cream, Led Zepplin (duh), Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, the Who, basically anyone who revolutionized music when they were big..there are bands that are attempting to "bring back" the classic rock sound, like Weezer, the Darkness, Rooney, al them..and dont get me wrong, they're all really cool, but guys like clapton and jeff beck and Ted Nugent and Pete townshend, you just can't beat them...they revolutionized today's music

Did anyone mention the band Yes? Yes is awesome, just saw them in concert last Sunday...

But anyways, I don't really see it gaining very much popularity. I think it's always been the same - teenagers like [c]rap. This is coming from a 13 year old girl. Hells yes. Me and a few close friends absolutely love Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Who, Yes, Deep Purple, Jefferson Aiplane, The Eagles, Van Halen, Lynard Synard, etc. But other than my friends, nobody around here seems to dig classic rock (except our parents haha).

Oh and one more thing - 13th Floor Elevator (in my opinion) had that psychadelic rock sound before Zeppelin - in 1965. I think Zeppelin perfected it...

Led Zeppelin was barely Psychedelic rock. Nor did they perfect it, and nor did 13th.

The perfectionists of that sub-genre are The Velvet Underground, no doubt.

Have any of you heard or have George Harrison's Brainwashed. Waht are your opinions on it. I'd give it a 10/10, it's amazing.

I love this album. When people talk about George they only mention All Things Must Pass . I think this album is super-underrated. My favorite songs are probably "Stuck Inside a Cloud", "Rocking Chair in Hawaii" and well... basically I love every song. Badmoon, thanks for bringing this up. 9.5/10

yeah, thus the reason i dont listen to that album much lol. i have to be in the mood to sit through it. i prefer their "folky" era (songs from the wood, a minstrel in the gallery, heavy horses) above anything else...right now my favourite song by them is probley off "stand up" titled "a reason for waiting".

^ Welcome

Today I finally bought Hot Rats.

I like it, it's got Beefheart, which is always good, nobody can sing like he can (With the exception of Howlin' Wolf). Some great guitar playing, and a great production. Which is sometimes good, sometimes bad. Now, the one thing I don't like about it is that it's Zappa'a first album without The Mothers of Invention. With The Mothers, Frank was a lot more humorous, and the music was so much more creative, though he's still very creative without them.

I give it a 9.9/10
