Hendrix rocks as we all know. One of (not the greatest) guitarists of all time. My favorite album is electric ladyland. Everybody always says that Are you experienced is his best because of purple haze. I think that the music is just generally better on electric ladyland.
Anyone else agree?
Definitely, Electric Ladyland is in the top 3 of greatest albums ever IMO. I love the diversity of it all, and Hendrix was a genious in the studio just as he was a genious on the guitar.
Yep. Hendrix would be a music god. He was the greatest guitarist of his time and took guitar playing to new heights. If he was born about 30 years ago he would be the greatest guitarist of all time.

Yea Electric Ladyland has All Along the Watchtower, my absolute, favorite Hendrix song. Ever. Its amazing. I like that album.
As for rock gods, Clapton and Hendrix fit well, and maybe Morrison. He definently had the charisma.

'Little Wing' is probably my favorite Jimi Hendrix song, just the softness and slow emotional flutter of it all. It sounds so great, that I'm disappointed it's not all that long. Oh well, there's always Stevie Ray Vaughan's version for that :)

Well, the bassist wasn't really a rock god. He was definitely very talented, but he didn't go into the limelight much, he just stood still and played his part. Townsend was definitely a great showman along with Keith and Roger. Those three together were rock gods perhaps, but I just think John was a little too stiff to be a 'rock god'.

For Entwistle it's not about the showmanship. He's the backbone of The Who, and probably the greatest Classic Rock bassist, and probably one of the most influential bassists ever. He has done so much for bass playing it's crazy.

The catchy acoustic riff, the dual guitar interludes, the three amazing guitar solos, the climax in the second guitar solo is near orgasmic :naughty: . Theres only so much you can talk about though. I mean, someone can bring up some obscure band, but it won't make for good discussion if nobody else has heard of them. Its not like classic rock is an ongoing thing. There is only so much to pick from.

Hmmm, by that I assume you mean the only three songs people tend to know about: Reaper, Godzilla, Burnin' (in short hand).
Out of those Godzilla is the best, but I've heard stuff that can bury these. Yeah, I unfortunately have their greatest hits CD, and have heard two of my dad's LPs (Agents of Fortune and Fires of Unknown Origins) which both were okay.
But I must say that their pre-Reaper stuff kicked extraordinary ***. Cities on Flame, Flaming Telepaths, and Astronomy....oh my god! Especially Astronomy, one of the single greatest rock ballads of all time. Even some of the later seventies stuff was pretty decent that know one knows about (In Thee, Black Blade).
However, I must admit after Albert Bouchard was kicked out, they really started making ****ty music.
Anyway, I don't see whats really great about Don't Fear the Reaper (except that middle heavy section was pretty cool). But BOC does have plenty of hidden gems. Plenty. I plan on getting Secret Treaties as soon as I have CD money again.

True. Pink is a fictional composite of Waters and Syd.
That's what I said (somewhere). Waters and Syd both wrote songs on the wall. They both wrote it from personal experience and waters (being the genius he is) sort of fused their lives together to make pink.

Yeah. he went crazy, which is what the 'funny farm' thing is about. he had a daily acid habit. not healthy. he started going catatonic on stage, playing simple chords, totally unrelated material, or not playing at all.

Well, he didn't quite help but there were some songs or song ideas of syds that waters used when writing the wall.
So he deserves some credit.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I offer you this:
The Top 500 Rock And Roll Songs (http://classicrock.about.com/library/misc/ptop500.htm)
This list got me into to Classic Rock today. Since I don't use P2P devices, I'm gradually assembling as much of this as I can through CDs. I've got 229 of them so far and I haven't disliked a single song.
For reference, you can make fun of me for using a list, but all of these songs are solid gold and I make sure to listen to whatever else comes with the CDs I buy. For example, Mary Jane's Last Dance (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and Higher Power (Boston) aren't on the list, but they're pretty awesome too.
I think the fact that this thread is so huge is a testament to how great Classic Rock is.

I agree with most of that list, a first.
But not the #1 song
I don't think it really matters if people don't agree with number one. It would be very hard to pick a number one that everybody agrees with. Stairway to heaven is the ideal number one song because nobody's going to say "why the hell is that there?"
