Welcome back Paranoidd. Saw you in the "classic hate" forum. Had to justify. Those crazy kids. Hope your trip was good!
Guess what I learned yesterday! Play along with Crossroads in A minor or A major and it sounds good! This works on blues songs! Yea! Guitar!

Alex Lifeson is cool.
Interview with Epiphone:
EPI: Are there any modern groups that you like or listen to?
ALEX: I've always been a huge fan of Tool. They haven't done anything in a while now but Adam Jones is a great guitarist. I really like his style of playing and they remind me of us in some ways. I know that we've been somewhat of an influence on them so I can hear that exchange in their music. Queens of the Stone Age, I really like a lot. Incubus, Mars Volta, you know that sort of thing. I don't really listen to a whole lot of music lately though.
Good taste in music :D

I love classic rock because a lot of it seems more raw and emotional than the newer processed stuff. The first badn I really got into was the Guess Who. Then I discovered Zeppelin and now I own all their albums (all gold :thumb: ). I definately recomend The Velvet Underground for preople looking for somthing different. If you want to write lyrics you should own tons of Dylan (I mean really listen to him). I'm not a huge Beatles fan though, and I've tried to get into them. I'd rather the Stones or the Who any day.

I hate the greatest hits concept. They're never the best songs anyway.
I found this out with The Beatles. My 10 favorite songs aren't even on the 1 album, and I think there's only several songs on there I really like (basically, let it be, day tripper, and something).
So I tend to stay away from Greatest Hits, kids just get that and they're like "Yeah, they're cool man" but they don't know any of the other goodies that never saw it big.
That's why it'll take me forever to amass a decent classic rock collection ;)
Going back to the Beatles 1 CD, lets take a look at each single, the A side that made it to #1, and the better B side that didn't (well, the whole concept is a flop; the Beatles first #1 was Please Please Me, which isn't on the album, and Love Me Do peaked at #17).
Paperback Rider/Rain: PR is good, but Rain is just badass.
Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever: Is this really a contest? What's so great about Penny Lane? Way too bouncy and happy. SFF is one of the best songs of all time. Why can't people like Lennon's music? Argh!
All You Need is Love/Baby You're a Rich Man: This is about the same. I love the lyrics in AYNiL, but BYaRM has better music. Sorta a tossup.
Hello, Goodbye/I am the Walrus: Hello Goodbye was good, but I am the Walrus is just a plain classic.
Lady Madonna/The Inner Light: Lady Madonna isn't my cup of tea. Inner Light is one of the more beautiful Beatle songs....George's first single too!
Hey Jude/Revolution: Hey Jude is fine and dandy and all, but, c'mon, Revolution! Its so spiffy and badass, I don't know what else to say.
Get Back/Don't Let me Down: Get Back has gotten real old with me. Don't Let me Down seems a lot mellower and more boring but I dig it a lot more.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, don't get a Greatest Hits CD. Just get the individual albums. It'll be more worth your while.

Big Brother 0wns. Even the stuff they did without Janis is good.
But someone was asking about Rush, and he got recommended some bad songs.
Almost anything Rush did after signals was not on par with their previous records.
Caress of Steel, Rush, their early stuff, its got a straight-forward Zeppelinesque vibe to it. Their 70's stuff like 2112, A Farewell to Kings was simply AMAZING. That is their best period. Signals, Moving Pictures, still great albums. I still like their prog stage the best. The musicianship...amazing.

I'm sure Bob Dylan's been mentioned before, but I'm going to bring him up again.
Anyone else think he's absolutely brilliant? I have Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, and Blood on the Tracks, and while his lyrics can be a bit out there I always feel like I'm listening to a genius. Everything fits, and everything sounds so good together.

Yea I always though Page/Plants lyrics were pretty good, but lately everyone has been ragging on them. I think it's "Come up with a lame reason why Zeppelin isn't great" month.
HEY!! I was ragging on LEd Zeppelin before it was a fad. And I did include him on the list, didn't I?
And everyone keep in mind I wouldn't be able to fit many entries. Jim Morrison, Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchel, George Harrison, ect. There's no room!!

08-13-2004, 12:26 PM
George Harrison is a great songwriter, I love his solo stuff (especially on All Things Must Pass and Cloud Nine). "Something", "Here Comes the Sun", "Isn't it A Pity" are all great songs.
Bob Dylan has become one of my favorite musicians, simply for his brilliance. He may not have been a great singer all the time, but he had a way with words that kind of made you forget that.
Jim Morrison was a great poet too, interesting images he created and groovy beats.
I like Roger Waters, interesting insight on the human pysche and such. Haunting lyrics a lot of the time too.
I also fancy Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin' - their work with Guns N' Roses was quite good, especially the ballads like "November Rain", "Estranged", "Don't Cry", and "Patience."

I don't care for all of Dylan's lyrics. I think Townshend's equal. And I'm guessing most of you have never heard Robert Hunter. He beats them all.
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
(Chorus)
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
(Chorus)
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home
Those are fabulous.

Then again, I don't think I've heard as much Dead as you probably have.
HEY!! I was ragging on LEd Zeppelin before it was a fad. And I did include him on the list, didn't I?
It's the fact that you actually explained why you didn't like them that made it all right :)

What exactly is rock? There can be many definitions. Jazz/rock IS rock. You can even mix in other kinds of music like soul, blues, or in your case, folk. So by your definition, some of your favorite bands are not rock.

The White Album should probably be #1. It looks like the most popular.
It's not about age. I would suspect you would know that.
Well yeah... Now that I think about it again RHCP aren't really the classic rock style of playing. Even though it's older than some classic rock.
Fine

I think either way it should either be White album or Sgt. Peppers. Because everyone has atleast one of those in there picks.

#1 - The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers
I also think Tommy should be above Live at Leeds and Who's Next. It's a better album.
Not necessarily on the top 10, but maybe if we do a top 100 or something.
