My parents have at least 1000 records. But I don't like using their record player. As soon as I get my own I can pretty much listen to anything. Exept various hair metal, hard rock black sabbath sort of bands that they don't like and I do.
Man I wish my parents are like that but my dad does have some VH albums on cd.

That being said, who here has been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I was there today, in the gift shop because I didn't feel like paying to get in. Oddly enough, I've only been there twice and the last time I went I knew nothing about rock music.

Well, it's hard really to describe what "Classic Rock" is. Back then you wouldn't be referring to it as classic rock.

But, the bands that generally get categorized under the classic rock genre; I do like.
Such bands as:
-The Beatles
-The Who
-Led Zeppelin
-Velvet Underground

Those are just a few.

Hey PinkFloyd, i like your Pic of the school master. You must be a long tiem member to get the name pink floyd.

Whats GW 0 - 1 mean?

Thanks man. Been here since Aug 2003. GW is basically a war in the Guitar Forum where people are matched against each other people who have been playing just as long as you and you both record something. Then a thread is posted and listeners (who are fellow MX members) vote on which song they liked better. When the polls close, the person with the most votes move on. So far we're just on round one. Go in the guitarforum and do a search for "guitar war" or try to contact MX member Ambush for more information about it. :thumb:

btw: It's 1-0, not 0-1.

Feel Like Making Love, man that song is fawking halarious. It does really piss me off. It doesn't bother me when a kid truely likes a band thats cool man, regardless if it's Simple Plan or Pink Floyd, if you really like music I can respect your tastes.

But people who have been wearing Big Baggy Sweaters on year, then buy a skateboard and start listening to Punk the next, then start wearing Floyd and Zeppelin band shirts the next year, just piss me off. This isn't a case of diverse music tastes. This is a case of a bunch of kids jumping on the next bandwagon they see. These guys who have "converted" to classic rock, abandon their old musical tastes, (which I can't figure out for the life of my why they love a song one moment and hate it the next) and prance around as reformed rockers. They like your big name rock bands, IE: Zeppelin, Floyd, AC/DC, but as miik said before, ask them who Bad Company, Boston, Heart or anny less known Classic Rock band, they will be stumped. And the worst part is they don't even know more than 4 songs from the band.

"Hey man, name 5 Pink Floyd songs"

ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?

o and for u classic rock fans, the crime of the new century was that the Yardbirds new CD, Birdland, recieved no attention at all. that deserved a grammy, or 6.

so are there any other classic rock fans out there, and even if ur not, have u been noticing somewhat of a revival in interest for that sort of music?

i have some friends at school who play guitar like me i stick just to the classic stuff...before i played i use to like Linkin Park, Korn, all that crap. playing guitar changed me. i hoped that it would change them, but they still listen to slipknot and that crap but yet, they like hendrix and zeppelin too.

I for one on American Beauty can not find a single song that i dont like on it. my favorite song on it would be either ripple or friend of the devil. without a doubt it is my favorite studio album by the dead.

but i do think all the songs are definitely about a million times better performed live. but of course thats only my opinion. :)

I love the stones.. i just have such a connection between richards/jagger!!! i love all their stuff, and also love their bluesy rock style... did any of you know that they got their name from a Muddy Waters song? Some of keith's solos are eargasmic, such as the one in gimme shelter, or sympathy for the devil.

Grateful Dead were one of the bands that invented the sub-genre. There were some bands before and around same time as them that contributed.

Not a big fan of The Stooges but I do agree they were one of the first punky bands. Another pioneer band was Blue Cheer. They helped create the genre also.

Grateful Dead is a band pretty much displaying perfection. American Beauty is... just... wow! Favoritte song is definately "Box of Rain". It's just a masterpiece.

Classic rock is the music I listen to when I'm not listening to my usual bands. I think everyone gets into Black Sabbath after getting into Metallica, strange but awesome, how all the hard rockers all love Led Zeppelin and other stuff that was around before they were born. It's this undefined tradition.

Just making sure, is everyone familiar with the following bands?
Don Dokken
White Snake
The Scorpions
Poison
Venom
Tesla
MSG

The doors are good. But for one, I just can't see why so many people are making Morrison out to be a lyrical genius.

Is lyrics were just good, they had many deep meanings, odd topics, and were just outrageous. I can see why people don't like them though.

Maybe I'm a Doors noobie, but I just haven't heard anything that great from him lyrically. Alot of the were great songs, don't get me wrong, alot of cool blues jams and stuff but the lyric was simple blues. Riders on the Storm and The Hitchhiker are show great lyric but other than that I just don't see it.

Can anybody care to point me to some other tunes where his "genius" lies?

I was a Def Leppard fan at 8. And I thought that was embarassing... Although I supposed "I won't backdown" by Tom Petty is a decent song.

I was a Beach Boys fan, and a Blues Traveler fan. My mom played The Beach Boys, and my dad played Blues Traveler.

Though, if someone asked if I was into music, I'd say no. But if I had to pick my favorite bands then, it'd probably be those two..

Boy Bands > Kiss

See, I like Kiss. And after having to defend my liking so much. I came to the conclusion that people put too much emphasis on why you like a band. I really can't explain why I really like them (Well, not to a great extend). I am just simply attracted to their music.

Is anyone else like that with other bands?

RnR, ill get round to doing ye avatar sometime =)

And about Pink Floyd, it wasnt just about the music! It was about the emotion and the feeling and the attitude that went along with it! I think its hard to listen to a PF song and not go, 'ye gods, this is magical'. Sure they invent the genre or whatever, but these guys are gods! Have you seen the PULSE DVD? Its so friggin phyc its crazy.

And yea, i got a few bands i like although i dont know why, like the sex pistols, the vandals and the exploited. Mostly punk bands.

ohoh, the Eagles are coming to town 8)

I'm back from Italy!

God CD's are SO expensive. I did pick up a nice little box set of the first 3 Velvet Underground albums, remastered, for 15 Euros (about 30 Canadian dollars).

New CD's go as high as 30 euros! Crazy...

Welcom back :)

You missed some good discussion and one or two fights.

Fights are always good.

I hate German airlines too...argh. I wanted to punch out a flight attendant for yelling at me for asking for tea...but I digress.

Here is my somewhat classic rock story about Italy :)

So I'm in my town (3 hours south east of Rome) which isn't a BIG town, but as far as small towns go, its a decent size. Now I went because it was our "festa" (feast) which is basically a big party for the whole town. They apparently had some bands playing, which I figured would be shyte. I shouldn't have made assumptions. I was already impressed looking at the setup because the drum kit seemed to be fairly large, so I was naturally assuming the band would be good, but I also figured they'd be playing some bog-standard Italian music (which I don't like).

Then I saw couple decent looking guitars...a nice semi-hollow gibson electric (very old) and what I think was a roland g10 (which I can't even begin to describe, you gotta look it up). Anyways I'm still assuming its going to suck, but then the guitar player comes out with a beautiful white gibson SG doubleneck and proceeds to play a 15 minute solo (well after 10 minutes the drummer came out and played with him), but I tell you, the only word that kept flashing through my mind was "Zeppelin" because he sounded exactly like Page...it was such a beautiful composition and arrangement, and after the drummer joined him, I was practically drooling.

Unfortunately, he didn't play anything else like that for the rest of the set, because they were a jazz band (although a very, very good one).

I just did not expect anything like that in my town...all the old people were covering their ears

I wish I had recorded it :(

Thats the only good music related story I have. One of those little things I'll remember forever.

Classic rock is at this point still the riegning genre of music to me, you can here the bands actual want to create good music and not make a quick buck. I agree with alot of you that the beatles are one of the greatest bands of the 60's, but not everyone likes em as much as, zeppelin, the doors, floyd, but everyone should give them respect for what they did for music. If only someone could bring back the sound of the 60's, 70's and 80's, but in many ways the music indusrty of today wont allow things like that to happen, hell i bet neil young wouldnt be able to get a recording contract just because hes sort of an ugly guy, which is why i dont really pay attention to what music comes out now adays cause alot of the time right from the get go the actual music is made second priority. just thought id give my 2 cents, and by the way for anyone who just thinks that Blind Melon is a one hit wonder (which they were) download or buy some of there music and youll find that they were a band that sounded like Lynrd Skynrd and Zeppelin in some ways, and yes people are starting to realize half the music of today sucks and are reverting back to classic rock.
