I was just wondering, what in your guy's opinion is the wierdest name for a band that you have ever heard, not that the popularity of thier band, or the quality of thier music will not be taken into account when you are thinking of the wierdest band names, just do the wierdest band name kk? :thumb:

I's say Metallica is kind of a cheesy name but you get so used to hearing it, plus, they're good.

I hate the band name "Rufio".

"Red Hot Chili Peppers" is a pretty random band name along with "Bare Naked Ladies".

I haven't the slightest clue about blink 182, but I know that sum 41 means one hand with 4 fingers clenching a fist I think, or doing something.... probably jerking. And you other hand giving the finger. meh.

For the guy who put System of a Down, they have a description of what their name means on the back of their debut album CD case :)

No, because no one will have heard of that band name.

Led Zeppilen was made up by Keith Moon, of the Who. It's an opoosite name-Lead(heavy material) Zeppilen(Famous Blimp)just like Quiet Riot, or Black Sabbath, or Alice Cooper, or Alice In Chains(It's a surprisingly successful way to discover good names)IMO.

Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?

Blink 182 wanted to name their band Blink, but there was already a band called Blink, so they each chose a number and they put em together and the result was none other than: Blink 182

Sum 41 got their name because the band formed on the 41st day of summer at a Hole concert.

Foo Fighters is the name that was given to extremely fast fighter planes that were supposedly seen by both sides during World War Two. At the time both sides just assumed that they were more advanced fighter planes from the other side, but it was discovered after the war that neither side had been sending them up, so a lot of people have speculated that they were alien space ships.

Well sort of..., actually when Keith Moon first heard Led Zepplin(then named the new yardbirds or unnamed(not sure)) He said they were going down like a lead zepplin so they took it put their own spin on it and made it their name. Kinda like how the beatles took black musicians who called rock "plastic soul" and made it into their album "rubber soul". :thumb: Now you know.

Slipknot

um thats all i can think of...there is Mest, although i know where that comes from. oh and on the first page someone put linkin park..the origianal name was 'hybrid theory' pre-cheser bennington...so thats why the firsts album (i think the first) is called that..so i think chester made the name 'linkin park' up.

Any grind band name is the most ridiculous name/song/album names you've ever heard. No other names can compare to the stupidity in a name like Mad Cause I Don't Have Aids, Vomitorial Corpulence, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Ana'l C'unt, From A Second Story Window, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Uncle Bob Drives A Combine, Thaddeus, Daughters, and Pig Destroyer.

Ugh, do I have to go on with more hilarious names? The song names are even more hilarious.

i can't believe nobody's mentioned nerf herder in this.... let alone zz top - surely these are contenders...

as for the blink 182 debate... i read someone said they weren't sued... i believe there is an Irish techno band that went by the name blink, and who threatened them with legal action, so they added the 182. Several reasons are there for the 182 - 1)the ideal weight 2)the scarface f***'s 3)no reason at all.

I can put to rest the birthday month thing - mark hoppus was born in March - which is the 3rd month...

and yes I'm a fan...

Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?

the meaning behind Sum 41 is that they started the band 41 days into the summer

and it has been rumored that blink 182 is named that because blink was the name of tom's neighbors dog and in the movie scarface they say the "F" word a total of 182 times no one is sure if this is true though

Deifekt

They were orignally named Blink. There was another band named Blink, so Blink got pissed that Blink stole their name, and Blink threatened legal action on Blink or something. That's when the whole 182 thing came in for Blink.

Deifekt
06-04-2004, 07:26 PM
i dont get system of a down, pink floyde, but led zeppelin was named after the guys' gym teacher

Wrong. Lynyrd Skynyrd was originally named Leonard Skinnard (I think that's how his name was spelt) after Leonard Skinnard, their gym coach. They later changed it 2-3 times and ended up with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Led Zeppelin came from, as rock not roll stated, Keith Moon saying Jimmy Page's new band would go up like a lead zeppelin. Obviously a lead zeppelin won't go up, but the band did indeed succeed. :D

I noticed that a lot of people in this thread had mentioned Blink 182 as being a weird band name, mainly because they had no idea what the 182 stands for. This is where they really got their name:

It started in San Diego, with Tom DeLonge being in a band called "Big Oily Men", which was less a band and more Tom playing music with whoever he could coax into it. Then he met up with Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor, who decided they were serious about making a band. They called themselves "Duck Tape" for a while, but then a few days later Tom decided that they were going to be known as "Blink". The name had no significance, and Tom just thought that it sounded cool, and it stuck. However, Mark, Tom and Scott did not know that there was already another band named "Blink" in existence, an Irish techno band that noone had heard of. The Irish "Blink" did not want like the idea of having to share their name, so they filed a cease-and-desist order to prevent Mark, Tom and Scott from using the name "Blink". The San Diego boys did not want to get involved with a court battle, but they also did not want to give up the name "Blink" entirely, because that's how they were known in the San Diego punk music scene. In order to differentiate themselves from the Irish techno band "Blink", the San Diego band just decided to add a number to the end of their name. The number 182 was chosen completely at random, thus the band became known as "Blink 182".

The band has gotten a little creative over the years, and they have made up some explanations about where they got the 182. Some of these explanations include:
- 182 pounds is Mark's ideal weight
- 182 was the number of miles between Mark's house and his girlfriend's
- 182 was the number of Mark's grandpa's race car
- 182 was the number of Mark's grandpa's boat in World War II
- 182 was the number of times Al Pacino says the f-word in the movie "Scarface"
- The eighteenth letter of the alphabet is "R". The second letter of the alphabet is "B", so 18+2 = RB, which stands for Rancho Bernardo, where Mark and Scott lived for years.

There you have it. The origin of 182. It is all true, as most of that came from their book, "Tales From Beneath Your Mom".

sum 41 is the date that they were signed onto their record deal... the 41st day of summer
