I've fallen in love with this band the more and more I hear this album. The self titled album, The Stone Roses by the Stone Roses is one of the best in my opinion to be released in the 1980's. With it's release in 1989, it was a refreashing sound that unfortunatly disappear as soon as it came. This is a relatively soft sounding album, so people expecting a 'kick' might be dissapointed. Anyway, here's the review.

The Stone Roses:
Ian Brown (vocals); John Squire (guitar); Gary Mounfield (bass); Reni (drums, background vocals).

1. I Wanna Be Adored 4:52

This song is basically the 'simple epic' in that the lyrics are not completely complex or anything of the nature. It's the musician ship that takes this song on to the 'epic' level. It's really a lovely song, jingling guitars and a nice bass/percussion section move this song along.

2. She Bangs The Drums 3:44

This song is laced with a poppy feel to it. Feels like you're gliding on air during this song, as is the case with most of the album. I tend to call it an updated version of Beatles' Pop. It's a decent song.

3. Elephant Stone 3:04

Ruff-Pop with a little wah action going on at the begining. The 'silent-loud' drum play is what really drives this song after that however. Again it's not a lyrically complex song, but the layers and musicianship are what drives this song.

4. Waterfall 4:40

This song is what really typifies the beauty of what the Stone Roses were capable of producing with their music. A 'happy' sounding bass and again the beautiful jangling guitars are what really pulls a listener in.

5. Don't Stop 5:21

This song is Waterfall backwards. Meh...

6. Bye Bye Bad Man 4:04

Another lovely Pop gem here, using the same formula as Waterfall they are again successful with creating a lovely song. This song really glides through it's 4 minutes plus offical play time, but it really doesn't seem like it.

7. Elizabeth My Dear 0:55

This is a simple acoustic song, this too is one of the more lovely songs on the album. I wish there was more to it than the 55 seconds it is, but it works for it's given time.

8. Sugar Spun Sister, (Song For) 3:26

I admit I didn't give this song much of chance when I first purchased the album due to it's opening being a little bit to 'slow' , but the true magic happens at 37 seconds of the song when the song hits all cylinders. Again another gem.

9. Made Of Stone 4:16

This is song too becomes an instant classic due to it's catchy formula that the Stone Roses used for songs # 4,6,and 8. All componets simply function on a higher level in this song.

10. Shoot You Down 4:13

Rolling drums and just a lovely trip through musical bliss is all that needs to be said about this song.

11. This Is The One 4:59

This song went away from the good equation that they had going for them for the rest of the song. It really doesnt fit with the rest of the album due to it's multipul layering of tracks and so on.

12. I Am The Ressurection 8:14

This is a 'anti-love' song and it happens to follow the same Gem Formula that the rest of the album flows to. The instrumental that takes over at about 3:40 in the song I found to be the best part of the entire song, the slight funk in the song is really refreashing.

13. Fool's Gold 9:45

This is the final track is the most diverse of the entire album. Like I Am The Ressurection's instrumental portion, this song explores some light funk which is also a breath of freash of air in a good sense. The album up to this point is great, but the last two songs show off the Stone Roses talents.

Welp, in all this album is a 4.9/5 or 9.9/10...whatever. Anyway, this is a band that I really enjoy and hopefully some of you fellow MXers will aswell.
