Ahh these were the good old days. One of the greatest bands ever at their finest. What Hits?! is a compelling and artistic way to show the raw success of the red Hot Chili Peppers.
1. Higher Ground
2. Fight like a brave
3. Behind the sun
4. Me & My Friends
5. Back wood
6. True men Dont Kill Coyotes
7. Fire
8. Get up & jumo
9/ Knock Me Down
10. Under the bridge
11. Show mw your soul
12. If you want me to stay
13. Hollywood
14. Jungle Man
15. The brothers cup
16. taste the pain
17. Catholic school girls rule
18. Johnny kick a hole in the sky
these 18 tracks all represent the RHCP perfectly with only a few noticable hits missing (i.e Calforniacation). Starting with track one, Higher Ground is quiet possibly the best song on the album, and even their best. Flea (bass is clearly the man of RHCP with his amazing slap and pop routines. Apart from their old funk ways, the funky foursome prove that they are the kings on the ballads with the breath-taking 'Under the Bridge'.
8/10

to be honest, i think bands should only release "best of.." albums at the end of their carreer.
this album does have great tracks though.

True, this is just more of a sampling of "cult EMI" days, raw and energetic. It was also made to show that the Chili Peppers had been around well before the mega hit BSSM. Their best artistic work has been with Rick Rubin and WB.

The only (early Chilis') killer track that this compilation lacks would be Walkin' On Down The Road... other than that, it pretty much flawlessly showcases everything that the Chilis do best. Show Me Your Soul is an especially neat stand-out track, as well...

I reckon when the Chilis are all old and have slipped into obscurity like John lennon and Alvin and the Chipmunks, there'll be a huge triple album of their Greatest and all their albums will be released with a DVD of something and it'll be the ultimate collectors item and we'll all be very happy.

I like to think of this album as a collection of rares and early stuff

John Lennon was murdered before he could "slip into obscurity". Idiot.

This has got to be one of my favourite CDs of theirs. I love pretty much every track (not too big a fan of Hollywood). I agree with unflea that Show Me Your Soul is a total classic, I remember so many times when I've listened to that and it's just put me in a great, energetic mood.
I'd knock it up to a nine out of ten, and the reason that Californication isn't on it is because it was released after What Hits!? was, if I recall correctly.

This cd is a great cd for someone just getting into RHCP. It has all the different branches and history of RHCP going up to Blood Sugar Sex Magick. Its got stuff from Abbey Road and up to Blood Sugar Sex Magick. Thank u all for giving these guys the support and praise they deserve. I give u all Chili Peppers high fives.

Heh, Hollywood is kind of like a cover of Africa by The Meters, so I guess you can't really blame the Chilis for it.
this is my favorite. before i couldnt really get into the chili peppers older stuff but when i found this cd and listened to it it made me go back and look at all their other stuff. this and red hot minute are my fav. chili cds

Horrible review.
But still, a good album, and a good summary of the pre-BSSM peppers.

plus the only songs on What Hits?! are off their first 5 albums (RHCP, Freaky Styly, Uplift mofo..., Mothers Milk, EP) except for Under the bridge which is on BSSM.

Hey, i guess you all know why there is only one song from BSSM?
Just incase you don't, its because when the RHCP switched labels, their old label was granted permission to make one compilation album, and on that album they were allowed to use one song from a future RHCP album.
So it wasnt really made to prove that the chilis were about long before BSSM.
Just thought someone might like to know! :p
