For many this is Blink 182's worst release. They had signed to a big label, had all the publicity power in the world and decided to follow up one of Pop-Punks greatest albums (Dude Ranch) with a piece of utter crap. Well utter crap is a bit to harsh however this is the weakest album from the trio from San Diego in California.

The album kicks off with the great 'Dumpweed'. One of DeLonge's better riffs and has some great lyrics. It continues Blinks tradition of great opening songs and it's one of the albums standout songs. If there was a maturity button after this song it would be turned right up. Don't Leave Me is a very poppy catchy pop-punk song but it lacks anything to make it a stand out song. Aliens Exist is next and it's a fun song. Going Away To College and What's My Age Again follow. Chances are you would have seen these played to death back in the days of this album on MTV so moving on to what is probably the best 'I've been dumped song' ever, Dystensary Gary. It's immature but the final chorus is where it connects to you and though it's poppy it's a song which will grab you. In the final chorus Tom sings '**** this place, I lost the war, I hate you all, Your moms a whore, Where's my dog? Cause girls are such a drag'. It's a song to listen to when been dumped. Adam's song is a highlight. Written about the suicide of a fan of the band it's one of the most powerful and emotional Blink songs. Definately a stand out track. Three very mediocre songs follow this; All The Small Things, Mutt and The Party Song. Wendy Clear comes in and makes up for the previous songs. A fun, very catchy song this is an highlight near the end of the album. The album finally ends with Anthem which is a pretty average song.

So really it's pop-punk at it's poppiest and most immature on this album. Maybe a Blink fan would enjoy this but for anyone who's thinking about getting an album by the band for the first time stay away from this one. There are some good songs on it but also alot of mediocre. Buy if you like your pop-punk Poppy.

unfortunely i bought this album many a years ago when i liked them, but then i discovered REAL music. yeah its your typical pop punk album, repetitive and cheesy. every songs pretty well consist of the idea ''my GF dumped woe is me "" all the songs sound the same and i bet if u sampled the drums and put it on every song u wouldn't know the diff same thing with the chord progressions all the same. For these reason i give this album a 1.5/5 and im being nice too

I agree. I used to like it when I was younger, but now that I'm older and more mature I agree it's crap. It's very poppy and has a 4th grade humor in every song.. Good review.

You could say that pretty much any band is repetitive. For example, Metallica: constantly singing about death, pain and suffering, and most (if not all) of their songs are in E.

This album is fast, happy, catchy and funny. The drums sound good (god knows why you picked out the recording quality), as does everything else on the album. The songs are well written, albeit pretty **** basic. They ain't very talented, but Travis Barker is amazing.

I give it 3.5/5

Blink is cheesy and Metallica ain't?

it is there like best album..because most people think of blink and think of them naked runnig thorugh town in the " Whats My AGe AGain" video...then everybody kno the lyrics to all the small thing.....Adams song is like another one of their hits so when most people think of Blink they think of the songs on this albums. Also Dysentary Gary is the greatest song with an amazing intro..even though I am a hard cor Blink fan I am Sik of Blink Theards...There should Be a Hole Group Abot Blink 182 like take them out of pop-punk and make another folder

My list of blink cd..not include the flyswatter or Mark, Tom and Travis

In my opinion (and in many other peoples opinion) this is either the best or second best (2cnd to dude ranch) album released by the band.
The album starts with a perfect song dumpweed, very catchy tune. Dont leave me is more of an average girl dumps boy song. ALiens Exist has a kewl riff but lacks the "X" factor when it counts. Going Away to College is a great song. Great music played by all. Whats My Age Again is an all time great. No guitarists repotior is complete without W.M.A.A. It is then followed up by another excellent song Dysentary Gary. Awesome riffs by Tom and the lyrics really bite u. Adams song is another all time great. Cant say anything more.
All The Small Things WAS a great hit but was ruined by overplaying it.
The party song is a wicked song! Great lyrics. Great music.
The rest of the album goes down hill except for The Anthem.

This is the album that introduced me to pop-punk. I still love it, but Its a lot too poppy for me now.

Dumpweed
I don't like this song very much. If I'm the right mood i can like it

Don't leave me
a very catchy song, i really like it when it's played fast on the mark, tom and travis show

Aliens Exist
An ok song - i like it better live

Going away to college
one of the best songs on the album - it's a great song. this is really good live.

What's my age again
i used to like it heaps but now i think its pretty bad. The choruses are catchy.

dysintery gary
not a memorable song. it isn't very catchy and i don't like how it sounds. one of the weaker moments on the album.

Adam's song.
This is arguably the best song on the album. Catchy, and a great sound, plus it is about a fan that killed himself. Great lyrics.

All the small things
i used to really like this song but now its too poppy

the party song
not a highlight of the album. it's pretty bad

mutt
once again - this song isn't great

wendy clear
a good song, if i'm in the mood.

Anthem
an ok song.

Their worst CD, but still memorable. The quirky tunes and teenage-related lyrics are still funny and great to listen to, but their immature sound has gotten tired now.

I think I'm gonna agree with hybrid, it is crap when you eventually listen to it properly. There is the odd exception however. Adam's Song is one of Blink's best songs pre-Self Titled, and there are classics like Wendy Clear, Aliens Exist and Mutt.

yeah i agree....easily blink's worst album...a couple songs are ok...but i agree with the rating.

I totally disagree! Dude Ranch was a good album but the singing quality has increased greatly in Enema Of The State. It is easily one of their best albums with few weak songs on it. I would be quicker to give it 4/5 at least!
And immaturity is one of the things that make Blink Blink!!

06-07-2004, 01:56 PM
i have to say, that although i agree that it's blinks worst album (and i'm a huge blink fan) there's also other factors here.

when you think about it, it's really how the songs sound that counts. on the mark tom and travis show, which i bought before enema, the same songs are transformed and sound great. on the album, unfortunately, there is the poppunk characteristic of highly digitalised vocals and perfectness that just sounds wrong. this is the only album they've done this on, although i realise tom cant sing for ****, at least it sounds a bit more natural when you get to toypaj and their newest cd.

the songs themselves- whats's my age again, adam's song, going away to college, wendy clear - they're all great songs. it's just the way the cd has been recorded that i think brings it down so much. still, everybody makes mistakes, and blink have made humungous steps (thank god) and not followed in the crappy pop punk that this was made of.

considering this, i would give it 3/5.

F***** right! It's not my favourite blink Cd, (Buddha,Cheshire Cat) but I love this CD. I don't understand how you could not like Anthem. That is the best song by far on the whole album. i am 16 and this Cd still holds up for me. I don't know why you all say that it's bad. Just because it's not complicated or especially difficult, doesn't mean the songs are bad. The only song I dont like on the whole album is "All the Small Things" that IS athe worst blink song ever.

blink 182 was one of the first bands i listened to. I think theyre music is good. Their only good albums however are Enema of the state, their live cd, and Take off your pants and jacket. i give this cd a 5/5 because i personally liked the music. I dont know why everybody hates em. Its they only punk band i like. i love playing my guitar to this album.

I know they are perverted, but they crack me up. Thats a good quality to have (arent you glad were not all the same?)

I think the idea that 'Adam's song' is about a fan committing suicide is a rumour... I read in an interview with Travis that he said something along the lines of 'It's about coming home from tour and you're really bummed and you just want to sit at home and chill with friends but they all wanna go out' or something like that.

Anyone got any links of any of the other band members saying it's about something different?

This is a brilliant album. The vocals are poppy, on some songs that brings them down. All these songs are better on MTTS. If you can find a copy, you should pick that up instead. Because you almost certainly won't be able to, this is the first blink album you should pick up.

I agree with aguywithaguitar. I'm biased, though. Enema was one of the first CD's I ever bought too, and I admit I'm emotionally attached. What did you guys think of their live album? That's my favorite, but there's a bias there as well, because I'm a sucker for the caricatures drawn on the cover.

hehe... i suck. when i heard All The Small Things, that really got me into blink-182, but I skipped the CD because I was 8 or 9 back then. Then Man Overboard came out and I skipped The ... Show. Then The Rock Show came out and I skipped TOYPAJ. Then I bought the new CD and downloaded their old stuff. Man did I miss out on a lot. And I'm still listening to What's My Age Again because it's so **** catchy and because I can play it.

i have to totally disagree with everyone who says this is the worst release from blink 182. dude ranch was a great album, but in all honestly its no better than enema of the state. its just different. you have to remember, enema was the first release with their new drummer, as well as their first major label release. so of course its going to be different. (and on a side note- to everyone that says blink and many others sold out by signing to a major label and getting on mtv, **** that. you show me a guy who will refuse millions of dollars to do something he already loves doing, and ill show you a friggin deusch bag. so youre getting paid to do what you love and people are hearing your music! is that the end of the gd world?) back to enema. im not saying the album is perfect. they have never been master musicians, lyricists, or singers. but it deserves a lot more credit than what its being given. its a good fun album with a lot of decent songs, and a few great ones. and with the entry of travis to the band, the drumming has made the band over completely. 2.75 out of 5 my ***. ps to everyone who gave the album a chance, clown love yo.

Even though All The Small Things was the second Blink song I heard (Dammit in 1997, so don't call me a teenybopper poser biatch!), this is the last album I heard from the boys, let alone bought.

And maybe it's because of that, maybe it's because it is their poppiest album, but I believe it is their weakest. I don't hate it, in fact I love some of the songs (Aliens Exist is such a good song to unwind to, The Party Song is insane and Adam's Song is a great tribute from Blink). But it just doesn't really suit me. I will admit to liking my fair share of over-played bands like Sum 41, Green Day, New Found Glory. But this is beyond pop-punk. This is pop. Pop at it's best, but let alone it's pop.

2/5 from me. I'd say it's a great record to listen to when you want something fun to put on, but it barely does that well.

i have to say that i do like this album. this is the album where it seems like they are starting to turn into a "real" band as opposed to a garage band. im a hard rock fan, and not a big fan of punk. theyre chord progressions are improving and it seems like they are becoming more musical instead of playing notes and chords that sound good together.

i rate it a 3.5 / 5

The greatest pop-punk release ever. Every song is catchy and has a subject which most, if not all teens can relate to. I can see why some don't like this album, but I believe it will be the album that represents the genre perfectly. It's fast, fun, slightly retarded, catchy as hell and just bursting with hit singles. I give it a 5/5, I still sometimes listen to it despite my tastes maturing somewhat since 1999.

Yah kif, ur right. Blink 182 is known for their 'blinkish humor' and even running around naked. That is how they got famous (besides their music). AC/DC is the same way. Angus Young is puts on an insane show at his live concerts. If you listen to their recordings of concerts or have ever been to a concert you know what im talking about.
