erm, crazy monkey, seven nation army, is not drop tuned, it is tuned to open G tuning which means you only have to tune 2 of your strings up by one step.
How the hell did you come up with it being played in drop b/g ?
Would you care to explain what this tuning is by the way ?

Well im new at guitar and I started Sunday and it's now Thursday. I know about 3 songs. (Seven nation army, The batman theme song, and the twilight zone. Dunno if you'd count the last two.) I've been trying to learn Nirvana's Smells like teen spirit and im curios if you have any excersises for your fingers and stuff to make them more flexible. Thanks.

To Jack-Nightmare:
First I'd check out the lesson forum and check out the chromatics from hell lesson. it has great ways to improve your dexterity. Learn a few chords and practice strumming. Alternate pick (up,down,up,down) as much as you can. Pick some easy blinker songs and go nuts. Keep reading as much as you can with musician forums... it helps alot too.

Well I've been playing for about 4 days now, kind of slowing down becuase i sliced open my middle finger the other day, but still trying to play =)
The first songs i learnt was:
Radio - Alkaline Trio (Intro. is very easy)
California Here We Come - Phantom Planet (just get the beat of the song, when you do it sounds correct.)
Dinosaurs Will Die - NoFX
(oh yea!) Marry had a little lamb (LoL, dunno if that counts)
Hrm, thats about it really, most of them i have to look at the tabs and i can't stay all with the beat yet, but im getting closer everyday!
My advice from my 4 days of experience is have fun, motivation no matter what, and practice! practice! practice!

If you got the hang of and getting tired of blink 182, try some of The Living End. Their music is a bit of a step up (it has solos :D ), in fact i'd say it sounds a bit similar to Nirvana except a bit faster paced.
System of a Down is actually pretty easy (learnt it sight reading), it's just the whole hassle of getting the guitar tuning right that i don't like  but the point is that it is easy to play and sounds like you can actually play :p
big80smullet
04-08-2004, 10:15 AM
for system of a down just drop D your guitar it sounds the same just one semitone higher. It only matters if your gonna do like performances of it or something.
My easy songs are:
Incubus-wish you were here (not really normal chords or timing but listen and itll be fine. Mega easy fingering)
Metallica-nothing else matters (if your struggling with the verse like i did just play Em D C then the ---320--- bit. its the rhythm bit that no one ever tabs out)
Um the only advice i can give is learn chords fast. Practice them untill your fingers are bloody stumps cause i didnt learn chords straight away and even now at 1.5 years of playing i cant do Cs perfectly. yeah C is a bitch of a chord

I gotta say that i dont believe half of you when you say you can play 10 songs after 2 weeks. I'd love to hear some actual recordings because i remember after two weeks of playing i thought i could play about 20 riffs from michael jackson to Rhcp. But now after 9 months of playing i've realised my tone was rubbish and the rhythm terrible. I've been playing for 9 months and i'm now working on consolodating all that i know and perfecting it.

oh yeah good songs to learn r like nu-metal bands like murderdolls korn etc..
but in some cases u may have to use different tunings
also, to make it even easier, drop the lowest (soundin) E-string to D and a power chord will now be a double stop
for example if it was a power chord on the third fret on e and 1st fret on a, in drop d the equivalant will be e-3 & a-3 (well e is now d)
did that make ne sense????

wow nine months u must really have perfect tone and rhythm by now..in another nine months you'll say the same thing about the way ur playing now

Some of the easiest songs to begin with are Pink Floyd.
Some of the hardest songs out there are by pink floyd, I think I would stick with the Beatles or "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple

I'll say anything that is punk is easy to play. It's usually just a bunch of powerchords.

If your pretty new at playing I would recommend some old rockabilly. It's pretty basic but can be a lot of fun to play and provides a great base to build on. From there you can go any direction you want. It can be simple on one hand but can become pretty involved with elements of blues, rock, and jazz. Some of the best players in the world cut their teeth on rockabilly.

That's the exact same position i am in...their are people on this forum saying that in 4 days they already know 3 or 4 songs....thats got to be Bull...because the first 4 days of guitar for me were sure as hell not like that....but anyway..i have been playing for about 8 monthis i think.... and im in the EXACT position as Idyll....because as u gain more experiance in guitar ur gonna learn more techniques like alternate picking and up and down strumming etc... I KNOW IF U'VE BEEN PLAYING GUITAR FOR EVEN 2 WEEKS...U DEFINITLEY HAVE NOT MASTERED THESE TECHNIQUES...I HAVNT EVEN MASTERED THEM

I'm not at 3 and a half months yet, i know a good deal of songs... no really tough solos... unforgiven, one intro solo, smells like, californiacation, part of stairway and part of the outro to november rain. Its not bull to say that it can't be done, i think i'm a bit of an exception because if you practice as much as i do of course you're going to get good. Its all about the time you put in. there are no standards. Somebody can be playing for a year and shred like a maniac if they've been practicing 10 hours a day.
Good song for a mega beginner:
Take my breathe away by Berlin

Alright, I didn't read through the whole thread so everything I list will probably have already been mentioned but oh well =P
These are the first songs I learned on guitar (in no particular order):
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Jimi Hendrix - Wild Thing
The Brady Bunch Theme
Harry Potter Theme
Adams Family Theme
Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment
The White Stripes - The Hardest Button To Button
Green Day - Brain Stew
Phantom Planet - California
The Star-Spangled Banner
Incubus - Drive
The Beatles - Day Tripper
RHCP - Can't Stop
The Eagles - Hotel California
Pete Yorn - Undercover
Pearl Jam - Betterman
The best advice I can give to a beginner is to just play what you WANT to play so that you have fun with it. You learn a lot better that way. And it's ok to pick things that look challenging, you'll be surprised what a little practice can do =)
good luck

word to all beginers: keep practicing all these songs andd you will reach what i like to call guitar zen. you will feel like you can play anything and you pretty much can too. ppl role their eyes wen they hear this but practice makes perfect. guitar isnt like sports where if you practice you stil might not get good caus your to fat or something with guitar practice is everything

that is true but as a beginer you might be sorta intemidated by it.i was until my buddy showd me what i was doing wrong and as a beginer you dont want to be skipping essentials and going straight to the harder stuff or youll progress very slow

It's kind of a beginner song...it's not that hard to play but to get that speed in the intro it might be a bit challenging for a beginner. I'd say its for someone playing 3-6 months. The verse is easy as anything though. That's for someone playing a couple days.

everyones problem with stairway is it is played to death
it's still a good song but if you go anywhere with a guitar everyone asks you to play it, then, in my experience stop caring after the intro. Still it is a good song to learn. :thumb:

the first song i learned to play was Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. Highway to Hell, Iron Man, You Shook Me All Night Long, I'm Eighteen, Heading out to the Highway, Paranoid, Electric Funeral, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, and Smoke on the Water are good songs to practice to start building muscle in your hands.

Hi there :) I'm 14 and I've been playing for 10 months. The first songs I learned how to play were...
Marilyn Manson- The Beautiful People
Marilyn Manson- Disposable Teens
Marilyn Manson- mOBSCENE
Muse- Feeling Good
Muse- Newborn
Those songs are really easy and great to start off with :)

^ bit of a muse and marilyn manson fan are ya?
Honestly guys, Work on just the songs that have chords being strummed in them first.
you need to know the theory basics of a guitar before you can start learning solos etc so that hopefully you'll be able to do your own improvisation.
I create alot of songs off the top of my head with just easy chord progressions (G, D, em, C) its quite funny really, sitting round the campfire with my friends singing absolute ****. at least the guitar makes my song sound good.
Cheers everyone
love steph
Muse- Feeling Good
Muse- Newborn
There's no guitar part in Feeling Good, it's just piano, bass and drums(but yes, the bass part is easy).
I don't think New Born is a good beginner song(a bit too fast for someone playing a couple of days).

Hi hey this is a great site and as a guitar learner I have picked up heaps of great tips from you old hands. I am into playing mainly softer folkie/acoustic stuff like Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter, The Smiths (anyone remember them?) etc, but I also dig older alt rock: Dino Jr, Buffalo Tom, Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses, The Pixies, B52s as well as vintage Byrds, Stones etc. I am looking for simple songs that a guitar learner of a few months could practise on. Any suggestions? Cheers.

Hmm... no I dun remember most of those, the first ones atleast... though the B52s music I've heard doesn't sound that hard, though I've nver looked at the tabs actually. Maybe look through their songs.

word to all beginers: keep practicing all these songs andd you will reach what i like to call guitar zen. you will feel like you can play anything and you pretty much can too. ppl role their eyes wen they hear this but practice makes perfect. guitar isnt like sports where if you practice you stil might not get good caus your to fat or something with guitar practice is everything
LMAO  its like UGH, i cant play, my fingers always break the bridge.... yeah thats true cuz i have been practicing and i fell like i can pretty much play anything with practice..... im even trying the blitzkrieg song from yngwie malmsteen, which isnt hard but its a pain in the butt to remember all of the notes in it

U guys learn so fast. how...
Well with a hell of alot of practice :thumb: and another thing, guitarists never stop learning i've been playing for a few years now an had the same guitar teacher for a few years now an even reading through the books he taught me from i still learn something new it just takes time to learn and alot of patience and alot ofn pain in your fingers(not for very long)!I play 24/7 except when i'm in school! I should point out another thing to beginners
playing the same thing all the time wont get you anywhere, take for instance when i practise i practise different things like say for 1 hour i might practise chords, for another i might practise a bit of fingerpicking etc it helps you to get better if you break up the practise time into little sections and play different songs which will help you when you wanna learn other songs and start playing the chords slowly and play em faster as you get better blablabla! :thumb:
justinjak13
07-11-2004, 11:31 AM
U guys learn so fast. how...
Most of the tabs are not how the artist really plays the song. So when beginners play a song they think they are really playing it, but the are really playing an easier version. Also, they just get a few riffs from the song, not the whole song. They don't play the songs perfectly either. They probably play it slower than it really is. I'm not trying to sound like an expert, cuz i am a beginner.

Thanks.
Well i started about a month ago and i have found that nothing helps more than actually playing the song over and over. when i started my fingers were weak and hard to get to the right string and fret but now i can play tons of songs Quickly.
oh and some easy songs are:
SOJH: Happy Fun Song
Greenday: brainstew
Greenday: when i come around
Nirvana: Smells like teen spirit
Lit: My own worst enemy
AC/DC: Back in black
and most of Social Distortion

If you're beginning chords like me, some really good and easy songs to learn are:
Knocking On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan (although someone already said it)
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Let Her Cry - Hootie and The Blowfish
Getting down the C, D, and G chords first was the best way for me. Then as you go along, you can easily hit Am, Em, E, C7, and so on. Good luck...

Well I've been playing for about 8 months and can play a fair amount of songs (for 8 months) and a bunch of my own stuff.
Easy songs tho would be
The Doors ,Roadhouse blues (my second song, the main riff is so easy!)
Deep purple..smoke ya ya who hasn't said that one..
Wild thing by Hendrix is so fun i learned it today in like 5 miniutes but its a definate beginner
Ina Gadda da vida by Iron Butterfly,if you want a more challenging version try slayers version
Pipeline by the ventures is a great two guitarist song..
Thats it,and for you people complaining about ICP,they (in my opinion) are not even near rock, heavy rock or any type of rock for that matter. they sound like really ****ty *** rappers to me.

The first year that i played guitar i was 12 and i wasn't really 'devoted' to playing. It was just an interest i had so i learnt basic songs with chords.
Thats the easiest way to go. Learn your bar chords and when you've got the hang on that move onto tab music. I've only just started getting serious about playing the guitar (im 16) and have been playing mostly Jack Johnson and Ben Harper to quicken my speed on the guitar.
Hopefully you're all doing well on the guitar.
Cheers everyone.
