(Before anything I must state that yes, I know, I’m going to have many people hate me for this. Yes, I know, but that isn’t going to stop me from reviewing this CD which I consider a CD that people should at least listen to first before judging it. Plus some of the stuff in this review was borrowed from www.metabolic666.com and I give them credit for helping me explain some of the meanings of the songs.)

(This post is pretty big, just so you know.)

Here’s an explanation of the band.

Rarely since the fiery crash of Buddy Holly's plane in 1959 have the words "Iowa" and "rock and roll" been used in the same sentence. As we've come to know it, Iowa means corn, livestock, conservatism, and precious little else. And like a thousand other landlocked heartland nowhere, it brims with kids dying from boredom, and with small-minded politicians trying to keep their little slice of Americana quaint, quiet, and soul-crushingly sterile. But the kids aren't all right - they're getting pissed.
And in Des Moines, their rage has a name: Slipknot. Draped in Ed Gein-style coveralls and nightmarishly surreal masks, touting a sound patched from the best parts of metal, hip hop, violent L.A.-style "new metal," and armed with a multidimensional percussive onslaught the weight of a hundred Neubautens, you could call Slipknot equal parts style and substance. You could also call it payback time for Middle America.
In a recent Alternative Press cover story, drummer Joey explained the band's vitriolic attack this way: "All of us were so used to having the middle finger thrown at us, that when we finally threw it back, we did so with ten times the venom."

Now, on to the songs.

1. 742617000027- This song is just samples and noises. It’s just repeating “The whole thing I think is sick over and over as it starts to go back and forth from speeding up to slowing down. The name of this track is the barcode number from their boiler suits off their first CD (Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat) and it leads up to the first actual track.

2. (sic) – (sic) is a literary term that a author includes after a line of text that indicates that s/he knows it’s wrong, but s/he’s including it. It means “said in content and (sic) has been used by the fans to describe the band Slipknot. This is a very angry track and it is a very good track to get some aggression out. The band made this track first for a reason and that reason is to introduce people to what Slipknot is all about: Anger and Hate.

Favorite lyric: “You can’t kill me cuz I’m already inside you.

3. Eyeless- This song is heavy. That pretty much sums up the feeling of this song. It’s basically about how Corey doesn’t know his father, hence the lyrics.

Favorite lyric: “I am my father’s son. He’s a phantom, a mystery, and that leaves me NOTHING!

4. Wait & Bleed- This song is a change from the rest. It’s a little less metal and more rock. That’s not to say it isn’t heavy. Hell, every Slipknot song is heavy, but this ones a little more rock. More safe, you could say. That is, until you know what the lyrics are about. “It’s about this guy that keeps having repetitive black and white dreams of himself laying in a bath of blood with his wrists slit… and one day he wakes up and he finds this dream a reality but he doesn’t want to believe this so he basically waits and bleeds. Quote from Corey Taylor. This song is defiantly the most known Slipknot song and the most played, though not ruined by mainstream success.

Favorite lyric: “I felt the rise up in me, kneel down and clear the stone of leaves, I wonder out where you can’t see, inside my shell I wait and bleed.

5. Surfacing- This could be the new national anthem to all the angry people out there (Check out my favorite lyric and you’ll see why.) This song is telling us that we don’t have to answer to anything or anyone. Don’t worry about anybody else. Just worry about yourself.

Favorite lyric: “F*** it all, F*** this world, F*** everything that you stand for, don’t belong, don’t exist, don’t give a sh*t, don’t ever judge me.

6. Spit it Out- This song was written in response to some people worked at a local radio station in Des Moines, Iowa. They were people who worked hard trying to keep Slipknot off the air.

Favorite lyric: All you wanna to do is drag me down. All I wanna do is stamp you out.

7. Tattered & Torn- This song has been know to creep out a few people. The beginning starts out with some wind noises then comes in the weird noises followed by Corey singing. This song is all about suicide and basically about killing oneself by slitting wrists.

Favorite lyric: “Tearing myself apart, from the things that make me hurt!

8. Me Inside- This song is about someone who’s fed up with another person and their actions. The story progresses and tells how s/he finally snaps. It’s all about the rage and anger of failing and being mocked.

Favorite lyric: “Giving into what has got me, bleeding, claustrophobic, scarred. Severed me from all emotion, life is just too f***ing hard.

9. Liberate- Heavy song all the way. If you’re mad this song will be your best friend. This song is about a high school kid who’s scared to death by everyone and everything. It’s about someone who gets bullied and picked on everyday and must go to great lengths to prevent it from happening every day.

Favorite lyric: “Liberate - My madness (One of me, all of you) Liberate - My madness. I just want to...

10. Prosthetics- Starts out with drums and then follows with some guitar work and enters more drums until it gets really going in song. The song’s about a guy who kidnaps this girl and basically adds her to his collection and keeps her there. At the end of the song he ends up killing her then having sex with her. Really f***ed up song, but awesome at the same time, but that’s how most of Slipknot’s songs are.

Favorite lyric: “Keep in mind, I am with you. Never left out fate, can't concentrate. You will be mine!

11. No Life- Starts out with guitar and then Corey basically rapping. I feel as this is a prelude to “People=Sh*t on Slipknot’s latest CD, Iowa. This song is all about how everyone is sh*t. All you have is yourself and so called “freedom. Everyone’s going to turn around and stab you in the back. It’s like whenever you need them the most they won’t help because they’re to busy worrying about themselves to carry about you.

Favorite lyric: My freedom is best, whole country's on house arrest and everyone's a suspect. You can't feel the flow because you died; face down on a suicide. The muthaf***er's on self-destruct. Nobody guardin' your back, it's all a front. Save this! My rage is bliss! I'm takin' names and gettin' pissed!

12. Diluted- Fast start for this song starting with drums and the guitars going. This song’s about people who are incapable of living. They’re haunted by others, themselves, and emotional problems.

Favorite lyric: “What the hell did I do to deserve all of this?

13. Only One- Corey is f***ing pissed in this song. He’s pissed at some asshole who’s been talking some serious **** about him. Not only is he pissed, but he’s going to break that f***er’s face! Great song if you’re in a sh*tty mood about someone putting you down.

Favorite lyric: “All I hear is human noise. You made your own f***in' choice. I belong to only me. Silence for my revelry

14. Scissors- Once again, Slipknot makes a weird sounding song work out. There are no vocals until about 1:43 then it becomes creepy until it becomes heavy as hell. There is no real meaning to this song except nothing matters.

Favorite lyric: “Biding my time until the time is right.

15. Eeyore- This song is what Slipknot really is. They’re based on the theory that they would never give up any style of music that they loved to play, for anyone.

16. Get This- Starts with a monstrous scream from Corey then goes really fast from there. It’s about how Corey hates all the bands who think they’re so big and stuff. This song is full of anger and is heavy as f***.

Favorite lyric: “Get this or DIE!

I give Slipknot a 4/5.

Thanks for your time. Please go ahead and praise me or, if you rather, hate me. Hell, at least download a f***ing song before telling me off.

Sic definitely has a lot of energy, and I like that a lot. I also like the phrase "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes!" from the next track.

I think I've grown out of Slipknot once I started playing bass and couldn't hear theirs (except for that tiny solo in Surfacing), but they're all right.

I like a few songs of theirs...Spit it Out is awesome as far as they go...but alot of their songs sound like noise...and they have about 3-4 members too many...

I'm going to suprise everyone I know on this board and say:

Yep, I like this album. :)

It's one of the more innovative nu-metal albums out there. I'd rate it 1.5/5 just because it's extremely inaccessable to anyone but angry teenagers, and the music kinda blows.

Anger is a nice emotion, but there are other things in life.

But I still like it.

I like the tracks Wait and Bleed, and Liberate, and Spit it out a bit. But IMO this is not the best example for metal/metalcore/whatever out there, and would not say that this album is a record you can convience people of this genre (what your rating of 4 out of 5 implies). For me, the record was not worth the money. Anyway, that are just my two cents.

Nice review. :)

My personal rating: 2.5 - 3/5, if I'm good mooded. (2/5 if bad mooded... ;))

I used to really like Slipknot but now i don't; but this is still a really good Cd, the riffs are excellent, its pure rage and the samples are really well done. I still think theres FAR too many members though.

3/5 methinks.

we all gonna die!
01-30-2004, 01:43 PM
I'd give it 4/5 but I used to like them more than I do now.
Where have all the people gone who always complain about how s*** they are?

You really can't judge a band just by the way they look. But the music seems to reflect that, so what the hey?

epifreak2002
01-30-2004, 11:31 PM
Personally, I like it, and since I've been having a fairly hard year, I've been listening to it more and more. Yeah, it's immature as hell, musically shallow, and lyrically one sided, but if you're angry, it's a good way to release that without hitting something.

I disagreed with a few of your favorite lyrics, i.e. Only One: "Only one of us walks away." the perfect "I hate your guts" lyric.

I'll second your 4/5 rating, but only if you're so inclined (see also pissed.)

ill be honest and say its mediocre and awful on some levels. The lyrics are the worst part and their marketability. They feel like they had to whine about pointless crap all the time in order to be marketable. Other then that, the tunes are somewhat catchy and I would consider them a decent band if it wasnt for that

The JoZ
02-08-2004, 11:32 AM
Well, look at who the lyrics are aimed at...they are meant to be violent, and overly cliche...

I'll admit too, that's half the reason I don't listen to them very often...because Corey is indecipherable when he sings/raps/screams half the time, and when you can understand him, he's only saying what other nu metal bands have said 50 million times already...

You know, if he only sang or screamed, and they changed up their lyrics abit...I don't know...alot of people talk about how nu-metally they are...and while they aren't really 'hardcore' as the definition of the genre is...they do seem harder than other nu metal bands..

Meh, this may not be the place for this discussion...but it does affect how much (or little) I listen to their material...

well for one thing sickness, us so called "punk heads" dont like goodcharlotte, cause theyre not punk, theyre pop, a little girls band full of a bunch of pussys who like to sing about **** they dont even care about. Another thing is that half of the people who like slipknot are *posers*, they think that slipknot is the hardest thing out there when i know all of us have heard numerous bands that slipknot couldnt evern compare with. Hell poison the well is harder than slipknot. Ive heard christian bands singing about jesus scream harder and play harder riffs than a bunch of angry wannabe-satanists who try to scare us with their gay masks and the supposed "insane" attitude in their music. Bottom line in that you shouldnt call our music a bunch of sellouts when if i remember right, slipknot was a sellout too.

I thought that as there is no Iowa album listed i thought i'd make one so here it is.

1. 515
Well its not really a track it's just Slipknot makin weird noises, they seem liked they are being tortured??? [score] 1/10

2.people=s**t
I Think This track is great i real heavy opening with every instrument blaring and joey's d/b bass drumming is sick.Overall though the lyrics arent as strong as others on the album but the aggresive chorus makes up for that.
8/10

3.disasterpiece
This track is pretty good but the chorus isn't as good and some of the lyrics are pretty bad the 1st two lines have nothing to do with the song, near the ends of the track when it calms and starts up again it sounds like slipknot again.
7/10

4.plague me
This is definately one of the strongest track on the album the lyrics are great and the catchy chorus makes the song come together, you can see this track on the resident evil movie soundtrack. good one guys.
9/10

5.everything ends
Good track similar to the other guitar wrenching tracks though faster verses and a even faster chorus gives this track a good and deserved.
7/10

666.heretic anthem
This song is great and has a catchy chorus and violently half-roar verses with other members of the bands adding to the chorus by shouting '666!'
another good one.
7.5/10

7.gently
A suprisingly calmer edge to Slipknot is realeased here or so you think until Corey Unleashes a roar and the guitars build then goes calmer again.
Then goes kinda crazy by the band going back to the older tracks styles by Corey and the other members roaring out the last 3/4 of the song.
brilliant.
8.5/10

8.left behind
Not the heaviest but one of the best or maybe the best song on the album with another member and Corey (adding to the verses and takin control of the chorus) shout out catchy as anything lines which have singing in the most unsual places. The track then loses the roaring and goes into a more creative mode as corey slurs out the lyrics:
'i can feel it on my mouth
i can taste you on my fingers
i can hear you like the holy ghost and kill you if you get too close.
Utter Genius from the band.
ps. check out that guitar
9.5/10

9. the shape
opening of the tracks releases more ear battering sounds and the verses chill out as you hear Joey battering his drums in a almost punk motion.
This one is up there with plague me and left behind another strong point of the album. brilliant chorus.
9/10

10.i am hated
The Track opens with Corey takin care of the verses and a distant robot type voice talking away in the background.
The chorus is great and stays in your head for ages, when you thought that these guys couldn't keep it up then can.
9/10

11.skin ticket
This track opens with Joey smashing away with a flare of cymbals wild splashes and chinas and his hi-hat.To a wild burst of energy into a mellowed part with Corey almost whispering 'come see my cage, built in my grain.
nice. 9/10

12.new abortion
An Amazing track with one of the best choruses on the whole album this one is a definate. 9.5/10

13.metalbolic
a rampant blare of firing machine gun drumming and aggresive verses,a great distorted haunting chorus with various members releasing lyrics.8.5/10

14.iowa
a terribly lengthy song starting with various sounds of screeches and Joey Hitting the bell of his ride. When it finally releases it's power it's a pretty good song.
8/10

Overall i think personally Iowa is a definate purchase for any Slipknot fan and basically one of the best records i own.
a rightfully deserved 9.5/10
buy it people for your own sake
cheers.

Ok My Bad, There Are Some "christians" In Slipknot, Somehow, But I Mean Really, Why Do Some People Have To Say That Slipknot Is The Hardest Thing Out There, I Mean, If They Werent So Angry At Such Stupid Things, There Music Wouldnt Be As Hard(not Really Hard To Begin With), And They Would Suck More Than They Do Now. Do You Really Think That Someone Is That Angry All The Time, I Mean, Why Keep Whyning About It, He Should Just Shut The **** Up, Get His Little Pussyass Out There And Do Something, Instead Of Acting Like They Do. Plus, Yall Bitch About Bands Sellin Out, Well Slipknot Is One Of Those Bands, No Matter How You Look At It.

Why Do Some People Have To Say That Slipknot Is The Hardest Thing Out There

That's true, i was talking to this guy who thinks hes really hard although he doesn't have much of an idea about music.

I was talking to a mate about my desecration tee shirt and this guy butted in and said 'Yeah well i go to sleep listening to slipknot!!!!!!'

It was a very funny moment.

Slipknot is the best thing to have ever been born. Anyone who says its just for angry teenagers can shut the **** up cos they dont have a clue what the knot is all about. All the maggots will understand. Stay (sic)

Slipknot being born is better than Black Sabbath or The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix being born?
Righty ho then, slipknot have obviously been more influential than those.

yeah, what ever new diabolic, slipknot is far from being the best thing to ever be born, i mean, the songs they have a pointless, theyre allways the same, nothing different about em, they yell and scream(if thats what u wanna call it) about the stupidist ****, and they are far from being the hardest band out there.

You obviously dont know **** all about slipknot and there songs and nothing was said about slipknot being the heaviest band out there. Its obvious but that doesnt make them bad. You should go pop in your linkin park cd or some other crappy **** to protect your precious ears and shut up about slipknot!!

Such an angry thread...
I really like Slipknot, (and I've got to admit, I am a true maggot) but personally I feel that this is their worst album. There were a few good songs though (Surfacing, Eyeless to name a few), but in the longrun, I'de much prefer Iowa or Vol.3.
And to contribute to the argument, Slipknot is definitely not the best thing to have ever been born. They're not the hardest, but I do think they have fairly good lyrics. The screaming and constantly saying '****' in the lyrics does make them an extremely angry band. But saying that Slipknot is for 14 year old posers doesn't seem to make much sense to me.
I especially wish that other Slipknot fans would use some form of intelligence when they post. All I ever see from fans of the band is "**** u they ****in rock they r the best ****in thing ever shut the **** up u don't know **** about them and they're the heaviest ****in thing in the world", and that pisses me off just as much as people who flame them for stupid reasons. Seriously people, posting mindless "they rock cause they're awesome" posts is what gives the fans and essentially the band a bad name. Think before you speak. Alright, I'm finally vented. But I can definitely understand what New Diabolic was saying - anyone who says Slipknot is noise for angry teens really don't know what they're talking about.

dude linkin park sucks almost as bad as slipknot. Why dont you try some new music for once instead of that wannabe scary-sh!t-metal stuff.

god this like been at my school, Ok im getting to be quite a devoted slipknot fan but i do realise that they are not the best thing to be born, i do admit that bands like the beatles are like the best even though i don't really like the music i respect that they change the music industry. But one thing bugs me is the fact when people just go around flamming slipknot its like all the people at my school, who say they are ****, but if you actually listen to them and give them a chance you will see that joey the drummer is bloody talented, the speed he plays double bass, and some of the faster songs the speed mick and jim play the riffs it is quite amazin.

And in respone to the people saying about the masks, heres a quote:

"We aren't hiding behind these masks, we're actually revealing more to you than you might think. The mask I wear brings out all the **** inside me that I hate. Plus it hurts like hell, which helps my intensity." "If you feel like talking, you talk, if you don't, you don't" “So many people are like, 'Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick!', **** you! You don't know what we're about! Our motto has always been, 'Music First.' Even if the masks and the coveralls weren't there, the music would still be good."

Now Any good band that should be the motto, thats another thing about all the crappy pop bands(naming no names *COUGH*busted*COUGH*) all they care about is there image and they don't give a **** the music they are creating, it just really gets on my nerves this pop bands.
Anyway I've said enough for know :p

you are a stupid, stupid individual. you think slipknot is the heaviest band ever? go listen to ...and justice for all by metallica. no song slipknot has written even comes close to any song on that album.
P.S.- slipknot is crappy music

Yes, very much so. But honestly, Corey is not as angry as you might think when he's not singing. Like, I expected him to be totally pissed off all the time, but he was not. Very cool guy for singing such angry music.

Are they the heaviest ever? No.

Crappy music? Absolutely not. The new stuff, as far as mainstream metallish stuff is concerned, is damn good. You can't go comparing Slipknot to Metallica, they are two totally different bands and styles.

MOP > AJFA though.

A suprisingly calmer edge to Slipknot is realeased here or so you think until Corey Unleashes a roar and the guitars build then goes calmer again.
Then goes kinda crazy by the band going back to the older tracks styles by Corey and the other members roaring out the last 3/4 of the song.
brilliant.
8.5/10

I suggest you listen to Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. This song is great and was re-released in Iowa. I like the two versions, but i like more the MFKR album. Just listen to Do Nothing, Bitchslap! and Confessions to see how talented they are...

^^^ WHAT??? i hate punk music. ahaha. and what the hell do you know? you obviously watch MTV far too much because all punk bands that you have heard of ARE pop-punk (blink 182, good charlotts etc) when there are plethoras of punk bands around (bad religion, ramones, the clash, new york dolls, the sex pistols etc) that are NOT pop-punk and didnt live the glamourous lifestyle that the bands that you have mentioned do.
i dunno where you got punk from out of me, my at the drive in avatar, my at the drive in username, or my flotsam and jetsam title, but please, in the future, shut up :P
I don't think somebody with a screamo fetish should be complaining about us listening to mainstream fad music.

The JoZ
10-11-2004, 10:40 PM
Actually, I think Slipknot have become less 'fad music' since Volume 3 came out.

I've heard so many instances of idiots bashing Slipknot for Volume 3, and saying stuff like how they 'sold out' or whatever.

...but in the process, they have gained new fans like myself who's favorite genre is prog metal. So...

slipknots ok, and slipknot is definately their best album (of course ive never heard MFKR), theyre music does get a little too "chaotic" sometimes but its good music to listen to when ur pissed (20 people already said that but i need my 2 cents in). Overall id give it a 4.5/5 just because no CD is perfect.

Also, what is it with people saying theyre "the hardest ever" theres tons of bands that are "harder" than them (most death metal bands). And yes i agree that some of the musicians are talented but they definately have as fast double bass as someone said in this thread, ive heard many other bands with extremely fast double bass, in fact some bands do the bass that fast with only one pedal. Dont get me wrong i like slipknot but there not all THAT great...
