Why do people from Thrash bands always die early in life? I reckon our chosen Genre has a curse!

JMetallica
01-29-2004, 11:01 PM
lmao, yeah. I'm not really sure COCAIN why they die AND early, must just be bad ALCOHOL luck or something. :p

JMetallica

im into old and new, ie metallica, megadeth, slayer, pantera, testament, lamb of god, motorhead, shadows fall etc.

Cool, just change your status and don't forget to include your favourite album's initials, and don't worry if it's taken, as Deftoned said, a lot of us are going to have similar ones.

I think someone from the Horde, but I don't remember. It was a couple of months ago.

I doubt that very much.

Did a cracking cover of "March of the SOD" with my band the other day - then we did a bit of "milk". Fun stuff to play and makes a change from all that doooom!

Ha the Titans are really taking over huh?
It's cool that the clans are getting along.
I always had a lot of sympathy for the Baphomet Horde

Oh and to the question: Why do people from Thrash bands always die early in life?
the awnser is simple.
Because they live.
They live Sex Drugs & Rock 'n Roll \m/

That is a good idea... but... I like it when people have their different individual avatars (within reason of course --> no Durst etc). I like my Wayne's World one, it reminds me of the line which Garth says when he's in the room with Honey Horneé
"I know you love music, let me just put it on"
"Have you got any Megadeth?" *weird face* haha

Im in, ill use (TNO) The new order - Testament

personally my favourite Testament album!!! Seems to be their most soild and well written and structured album IMO (yes i own them all). Alex's leads are top knotch on here, what a player.....i still get goosebumps listening to him play. I liked their guitar tone on this record alot, and the cover of Aerosmith's "nobody's fault" was a great way to combine thrash metal with classic rock, id like to hear more of that with bands.

That was a good idea from metdrummer, but truth is 1) I like having my own avatars, 2) I'm too lazy to find a icon of Kill 'Em All (despite me making each of these K' avatars in Photoshop). I think allowing our members to keep their own avatars gives us indivualism.

Alright here's a question....

Who do you think is the best drummer in Thrash. I'm gonna say Charlie Benante for best drummer.

TheUnforgiven
02-01-2004, 11:33 PM
^ Hes pretty good.

I'd say Paul Bostaph or Dave Lombardo. Just gotta love double bassing.

Some old Lars Urlich is good, from RTL till ...AJFA.

ThrashMaster27
02-01-2004, 11:36 PM
Dave didn't use the Double Bass in Show No Mercy much. His beats were still kick *** in it though.....it's one of the main reasons I like the CD so much. He just seems to know when and where to put the beats.

As for Ulrich, his drumming is pretty pants in all albums but ...AJFA....he has his moments on One, Blackened and Dyers Eve.

TheUnforgiven

How about best thrash vocalist?

Griffin_Page
02-01-2004, 11:45 PM
Tom Araya - The Voice of Evil.

ThrashMaster27
02-01-2004, 11:52 PM
that's a tricky one..most Thrash Vocalists are crap :p

Max had a good feel to his voice back in the Morbid Visions - Arise period, Tom Araya had a good voice on Show No Mercy with the Halford screams and I like Joey Belladonna from Anthrax aswell, he can hit the high notes very well.

ThrashMaster27
02-02-2004, 12:04 AM
there's a lot of Thrash Vocalists that aren't up to scratch.

Paul Baloff
Dave Mustaine
Chuck Billy

All the earlier influences like Venom (Cronos) and Motorhead (Lemmy) also had crap vocalists. I don't mean their style is crap, I mean they're just crap as far as singing goes. Was kinda meant as a joke......

Anyway! best Bassist now then.....my pick is Dave Ellefson.

Yeah, I think the dude meant in singing ability, but in thrash..you don't need ia great voice too much..look at Tom Araya, possibly the worst voice ever. It **** well matches the brutality of the music though, but listening to him scream in 'Angel of Death' cracks me up. Best bass player? Definitely not Tom either hehe. Ellefson is definitely up there, but there are a couple of people who have him beat.

Well that's my opinion....I love the music and I actually like the vocals. Hmmm I shouldn't have opened my mouth...I basically meant that they fit the style of the music well, but they ain't to great in the vocal department.

JMetallica

Best drummers are Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, and if you consider old Mercyful Fate Thrashy, then Kim Ruzz would have to be my favourite thrash drummer.

As for the vocalists, well lmao, not too many thrash vocalists are technically good, but their voices suit the music right to the bone, which was the point i think thrashmaster was making? I've always loved baloffs vocals (screams?). I also enjoy most thrash vocals of the european persuasion. Angelripper, Schiemer, Mille, Warrior, Ron Broder... I love them all :D.

Jondur
02-02-2004, 04:24 AM
Cronos is god. Criticism isn't allowed.

Best drummer - Bostaph, Hoglan, Benante
Best Vocalist: Neil Turbin, Tom G Warrior
Best Bass Player: I count Sadus as thrash more than death so Steve Digorgio

Now I know someone wants to do best guitarist!

ps it's Mustaine.

Ok, thats your opinion and im cool with that... But personally i think Lombardo is the better man.

Jondur
02-02-2004, 05:34 AM
It is obvious that Lombardo fits the band better but when you listen to Divine Intervention there's some pretty crazy stuff on there. Songs like Killing Fields are more complex than anything Dave has done with Slayer, Grip Inc, Fantomas, Testament or whoever.

LordDargon
02-02-2004, 08:55 AM
Drummer - Benante, and also Andy Galeon, I mean the stuff he did on The Ultra-Violence was not the greatest ever, but he was like 13 or 14 at the time. So that's pretty amazing.

Guitarist - Skolnik, although King and Hanneman make an unstoppable team.

Bassist - I dunno, maybe Newstead, he did some great stuff with Flotsam.

Vocalist - Now this is hard... I dunno

And also, i'm getting tired of my avatar. The RiB cover art sucks. It looks like friggin' Salvador Dali or something. Anyways would you guys kick me out me if I used Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines instead? If it HAS to be thrash I can use PS...BWB?

Well Venom were the first thrash band so the influence there is obvious. Bathory didn't really make a huge impact on the US thrash bands but if Dave likes them I applaud his good taste!

Im pretty sure Motorhead started trash and Venom were the first black metal band.

Controversial I know, but I think that technically Bostaph is better.

Lombardo never really did it for me, same style of drumming for every song...Paul Bostaph had alot more variety on his fills espically, such a shame he was on their worst three albums.

Motorhead were mor of a pre-tHrash band and helped build the foundation for the thrash to come. Venom was the first actual thrash band and are only called black metal due to there lyrics while the musically it is still thrash.

Drummer - Benante (not the best, but when I hear his drumming it makes me play air drums; I can't think of any other drummers who do that to me)
Vocalist - Araya
Bassist - Newsted
Guitarist - Hanneman

Drummer - Paul Bostaph
Vocalist - Araya (his voice from SNM till about Divine Intervention has that sharpness to it that goes perfect with the music, IMO)
Bassist - Cliff Burton
Guitarist - Dave Mustaine

Drums - Benante. Lombardo and Bostaph just play a fast double bass beat with a few fills. Not that amazing technically per say
Vocals - Ayara or old Hetfield
Bass - Burton
Guitar - Hanneman

Drums - Lombardo: I love all of his beats, but Bostaph has him beaten on the double pedals. Louie Clemente is d*mn underrated, he's a great drummer. I'm a big fan of Nick Menza as well.
Bass - Cliff wasn't that great, he had three shining moments, but Ellefson and Greg Christian have him beat.
Rhythm Guitar - Mustaine: Can play a mighty fast riff, with tremendous coordination, and could sing and play his material.Definitely close behind:Hetfield, and I really think Scott Ian was rather underrated. Hanneman is good, but all of King's solos are just divebombs, it cracks me up.
Lead - Skolnick or Friedman: Both of these guys could wipe the floor with everyone else.
Vocalist - Hetfield: He had the ultimate frontman persona; he was brutal and so physical on stage and had a tremendous power over an audience, and wrote some **** fine lyrics too. Steve Souza, Chuck Billy, Tom Araya, all deserve mentions.

Bingo! We have a winner. It's a fair point with Motorhead but they were too punk to be proper thrash - Welcome to Hell was the first album when you could say "that is thrash metal". Calling Motorhead thrash is a bit like saying Black Sabbath were doom just because Cathedral sound like them.

deftoned
02-03-2004, 03:35 AM

If it was up to me you wouldn't be allowed in the clan because you look for arguments basically.....something we could do without. Plus you claim to be a massive fan of Megadeth and you spelt it Megadeath! no, no we can't have that. ANd I was worried about a Clan War. Turns out we just amongst ourselves instead. I'm pretty sure there's no status problems with this clan. I mean, Me, JMetallica and Deftoned came up with this, and so far except for Deftoned starting us off, we've had little to no leadership input, and we don't expect to be respected as leaders or founders. The fact that someone mentioned I only like Megadeth and Metallica and I wasn't crucified or even questioned about my membership means that none of you care who's the moost 'hardcore' and 'true' Thrasher. So don't fight amongst each other because of joining date or if you think you like thrash more than someone else.

Totally agree with that. I kind of started with Megadeth and Metallica, but thats when I was around 9-10, so it got kinda repetitive after a bit and I started looking for more simular bands. This led me onto Exodus, Testament, Overkill, Sepultura....etc. Kinda like a growing process.

You should have got Beneath The Remains or Schizophrenia.....that is, if you don't have any Sepultura albums already. Choas AD is more straight out Heavy Metal, but sounds a bit more harder due to Max's vocals.

I don't have Darkness Descends, but I could easily pick it up at Metal Mayhem in Melbourne, not that it matters to you :p you can pick up all Exodus albums from JB-HI though.

You should be able to pick it up on the sanity web site (as much as I HATE large record destributors)... They have all dark angel's albums, I think. They should have Bonded By Blood too. If that fails, you should be able to order it in from a local independant record shop, or any other large chain, as century media re-issued them.

As for chaos AD... It was my second Sep CD, that i got right after roots. I listened to it a few times, but even then (3 or 4 years ago) i didn't like it. Now that my horizons have expanded 10 fold, i realise what a poor album it is. It's metal, but it's sucky metal. I agree with ThrashMaster, it is far removed from death metal and you should get BTR or Schozophrenia. \m/ fantastic albums.

Theres another good site which has a large metal range.that I cannot remember the name of right at the moment, although i have never bought from them.

Also, you can find a lot of CDs cheaper overseas... save up a few $100 and order from an american site. :thumb:

Arise had more than a nod towards death metal as did BTR while Chaos AD had more than a nod towards faggotry.

All of Sep's early albums had atleast a touch of death metal sound to it... And wouldn't you know it, Morbid Visions is a death metal album! :o :p

You know, I just skimmed the first page of theRock and Metal forums and saw about 4 threads to do with thrash. I think the creation of our clan has spread thrash and given it a boost in popularity. Three cheers to JMetallica and Deftoned for creating the clan and making thrash well known.

What does everyone think about Megadeth's song 'My Last Words'? I've been listening to that one song a lot of late and i think it is my favourite 'deth song. Pure ****ing Speed Metal!

I think it is pretty much Megadeth's Tormentor! :p

Hmmmmm great song indeed, but I don't think it's their best. Rattlehead, Last Rites/Loved To Deth or Tornado of Souls are the best, in my opinion anyway. :thumb:
