Exodus-Bonded By Blood, that album kicks ***(BBB, A lesson in Violence, Metal Command, yeah just buy the album, its great)
and as for Testament-The Legacy is supposed to be the best, I've heard some of The New Order which I like a lot
Coroner-Everyone says Punishment for Decadence, and RIP are the best. I've only heard the song Die By My Hand.

ThrashMaster27
07-20-2004, 06:35 PM
I'd like Punishment For Decadence if the vocals were more hearable. Album wise for Coroner, I'd get anything but Grin. It's good, but it's not very Thrash-esque. Exodus you need Bonded By Blood, but Tempo Of The ****ed and Fabolous Disaster are both great albums aswell. All the Testament albums are great in their own way but I recommend The New Order over anything else.

The Legacy = Testament's best album.

Why?
It has Apocalyptic City.

For Coroner, get R.I.P... personally I don't dig Ron Royce's vocals, but the music on its own is just awesome... technical thrash riffing at its best.

SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman recently spoke to the Rock N Roll Experience web site about the group's upcoming CD, METALLICA, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine and his past drug use. The following are some of the highlights of the interview:

Rock N Roll Experience: What did you think of METALLICA's progression?

Jeff Hanneman: "I guess you could say we saw it coming, because even back in the day when they were heavy as ****, Lars [Ulrich] was into some kind of new wave bands and he was always talking about that kind of crap, so you can see it coming, but I don't know, we listened to punk and stuff like that and we are not listening to metal or whatever, so there was no reason for us to change."

Rock N Roll Experience: What do you think of [MEGADETH mainman] Dave Mustaine finding God after he got sober?

Jeff Hanneman: "I don't know [laughs]. All I know about him is I used to like his guitar playing a lot, I liked his first few records, of course I liked his stuff when he was in METALLICA and I liked his solos because they were like really technical, but they had an anger to them with a little over-the-edge type of sound, but his last few albums were just too commercial for me. Personally, I think the guy is a little out of his mind, but I get along with him."

Rock N Roll Experience: Did you have any drug problems?

Jeff Hanneman: "Well, me and Tom (Araya) and some of my friends, we used to really be into cocaine, and like one day Tom was dropping me off at home and I think it was 7 or 8 in the morning and I think it was after two days of staying up and he's driving and I'm shoving **** up his nose & I'm taking stuff and this can lead to only death or something, this is going too far. So I quit and he quit and I think he (Tom) just smokes pot now and I drink and that's about it. We quit because I was taking pills and doing all of that ****, it was just like, one day, you know what, it's enough!"

Rock N Roll Experience: When is the new SLAYER CD coming out?

Jeff Hanneman: "I think we are gonna go in January, we were trying to get it out this year & it turned out that way because Rick Rubin [American Recordings head honcho] is changing distributors again like always and we figured why do the record now and have it sit on the shelf."

SLAYER Frontman TOM ARAYA: 'Live Peacefully And Love One Another'

SLAYER frontman Tom Araya recently spoke to the Denver Westword about his band, his voice, prison letters, child rearing, God, world music and exploiting Satan for fun and profit. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

Westword: Do you still get letters from incarcerated people?

Tom Araya: "Yeah. They're pretty out there. It's like 'Man, dude, maybe it's a good thing you are in jail.' They're genuine letters. I know that they're kids. It's great that SLAYER inspires them to carry on. There's hope. Which is really odd to be saying. People say that listening to SLAYER has helped them along in crucial parts of their life. I've gotten letters from Marines and different branches of the military. They're pretty trippy, too. Actual accounts of them in Iraq listening to SLAYER while they're doing what they do. I'd like to think that it's the music giving them aggression and strength. It kind of recharges your batteries. It's like some of these athletes that we've met listen to SLAYER to get 'em pumped up. Mostly in hockey and football."

Westword: What's the biggest misconception people have about SLAYER?

Tom Araya: "The obvious one: the Satan stuff. I'm not here to fault anybody. And I hate to say this, but Christ came and taught us about love. About doing unto others. That was his preach: Accept each other for who we are. Live peacefully, and love one another. Period."

Westword: Do you believe in God?

Tom Araya: "I believe in a supreme being, yeah. But He's an all-loving God."

Westword: Can you see how people might miss that message in your music?

Tom Araya: "Yeah. And I don't fault them for that. Songs are open for interpretation, you know? It's like we can both be looking at a flower, but the information that we absorb is different about that flower."

Westword: But SLAYER is not about spreading the love.

Tom Araya: "SLAYER's about what we enjoy. Putting together some really cool songs. Like on 'God Hates Us All'. There's some really good stuff in there lyrically that just blows my mind. That's something that intrigues me about what I write. The serial-killer stuff is like, 'What thought process led you to this?' It's like everyone has been asking for a sign. The Twin Towers were a ****in' sign! Actually [September 11, 2001] was the release date of 'God Hates Us All'. We did a midnight signing at a Tower Records. They had over 3,000 kids there. We were supposed to fly out the next day and start a tour in Europe."

I've just taken this from www.metalhammer.co.uk

22 Jul 2004 Slayer are now looking to begin recording their as yet untitled new studio album in January.

Chimaira guitarist Matt DeVries told Metal Hammer.co.uk: "I've heard some demos and it's awesome dude! It's a mixture of all of Slayer. I don't know how to describe it properly, but if I had to it's a mix of 'Reign In Blood' and 'God Hates Us All'. It's killer!"

Slayer axe man Kerry King dismissed DeVries interpritation in an interview with Hammer saying: "If we crossed 'God Hates Us All' and 'Reign In Blood' it's be fast, balls out chaos! [laughs] Well if you ask me that same question I'd have said 'God Hates Us All' and 'Seasons In The Abyss'. The new record has got some heavy stuff on it with guitars tuned to B, and Jeff's got one with another clean intro which we haven't done since... ****, '213'."

black metal > welcome to hell > at war with satan

at war with satan > in league with satan > buried alive

Heh... Welcome to Hell is more thrashy, whilst Black Metal and At War With Satan are just in a genre of their own. Black Metal is cool, groovy metal, which is very enjoyable, but I reckon Welcome to Hell owns it severly.

ANTHRAX singer John Bush has been in the studio finishing up the vocals for the group's upcoming collection of Joey Belladonna/Neil Turbin-era songs performed by the band's current lineup, dubbed "Metallum Maximum Aeturnum". According to guitarist Scott Ian, the band may change the title of the collection to "Old School, New School, Our School: Metallum Maximum Aeturnum" or "Metal Thrashing Mad: Metallum Maximum Aeturnum". "We'll mix it when we get home after Budapest and it's scheduled for release November 8 in Europe and November 23 in the States," he said. "Australia is in there as well. Both releases will have different extras. I think the Japanese release (a week before Europe) comes with a puppy."

Goat Horn, Anvil and Razor were all amazing... freakin' amazing!

War Machine played a good set... they did a great cover of The Trooper for their last song.
Horde of Worms were good... and Exciter were good. The other locals bored me... and I left before Infernal Majesty came on, but only because they're playing in my city on August 3rd. (BTW, ratmevilempire, that's at the Dungeon with Wetwork and Evirus, so go!!)

Heres a lolly pop. :p

And that tribute album looks interesting, lots of decent bands and only a few shockers, which is fairly rare for tribute albums. Look foward the hearnig the dark angle and motorhead especially. And I wonder if "Members of .... JUDAS PRIEST" means Halford might make an appearance? That would be something special hearing him sing Enter Sandman. :D

To celebrate the release of their re-mastered catalog July 27, MEGADETH is launching a contest for 25 lucky winners to gain entrance to an exclusive chat room with Dave Mustaine. Sponsored by EMI, Abrasive Rock, and Fan2Fan the contest asks MEGADETH fans to submit their thoughts on why these albums are so meaningful and memorable. On August 18, the fans with the best answers will be sent the information for a secret chat room where Dave Mustaine will answer all their questions. By allowing only the 25 most dedicated fans into the chat, the winners will experience an event that is unforgettable.

The re-releases include seven albums from the pioneering metal band, along with a new, never-before-heard version of a MEGADETH-related side project, MD.45. "I have finally gotten to go back and make everything that I was hearing in my head available to the fans, so that they can experience the songs the way that I feel they truly are in my soul," says Mustaine about his massive project on Capitol Records. "Some of the songs just didn't turn out the way that I wanted them to when they were first made, due to money restrictions, technology limitations and so on. I believe now that there is nothing standing in the way of what I felt when I wrote these songs and how you will be able to hear them."

This chat will give the winning fans a chance to learn more about Mustaine’s motivation for the re-masters, as well as all the work that went into preparing them for release. Fans will also be able to hear more on the band’s new material to be released on Sanctuary Records on September 14.

SLAYER frontman Tom Araya recently spoke to the Tucson Citizen about the group's July 11 show in Augusta, Maine which was recorded for an upcoming live DVD. The band, who played the 1986 album "Reign In Blood" from start to finish at the gig, were focused on just the final minute of "Raining Blood", the closing song on the 10-track record.

"It's kind of like little kids waiting for a new toy. 'Here it comes. Here it comes,' " Araya said, laughing. "The effect we were trying to achieve only happens at the end of the album, the last minute ... . And when it happened, it was great."
Araya was a bit cagey about the specifics of the special effect that made him so giddy, but he offered a clue. "The album title gives it away. It looked really, really cool."

"Reign in Blood" was SLAYER's third album and the first produced by Rick Rubin for his Def Jam label. Araya wants Rubin to produce SLAYER's next album, which he hopes will see the band in the studio by the end of the year.

"If not Rubin, someone like Rubin, who will work like Rubin. In other words, who will be a part of the process," Araya said, adding that Rubin is very hands-on and acts, necessarily, like a "referee" for SLAYER. Rubin was somewhat involved in the band's 2001 album, "God Hates Us All", in terms of financing and suggesting who should do the final mix.

"He's got an ear for sounds and for talent ... to find people who are really good at what they do," Araya said.

A dozen songs have been written for the forthcoming album, with just some tinkering and lyrics to be done. Because of Ozzfest, Araya notes, the band is in "pause mode." The record, Araya promises, will sound like SLAYER. "You can take my word on it that it will always be very SLAYER," he says. "We'll stick to the core."

Hey, this is an article from my local newspaper, about Metallica's movie. I think some of you will get quite a laugh out of it

"As Dr.Phil is eager to tell you, relationships take work. Metallica learned that the hard way. When longtime bass player Jason Newsted departed and singer guitarist James Hetfield checked himself into rehab, like a long married couple, the band was forced into facing its demons.
So they got their own Dr. Phil to save the day, by way of a counsellor who went as far as to relocate his family to San Fransisco to be near the band and engage the members in intense daily therapy seesions. He even attended recording sessions for their first studio album since 1997, appropriately named St.Anger.
That was back in 2001, and it's all documented, along with plenty of other inside glimpses in the movie Metallica:Some Kind of Monster; which opens friday in Windsor.
The therapist, who was at times rumoured to be recieving $40,000 US per month, stopped working with the band when they went on tour last summer, but he is still in constant contact with drummer Lars Ulrich.
"We got all our crap worked out, figured out, and so on" says Ulrich, on the road from a tour bus outside Reno, Nev. in March.
"He was certainly a major part of getting the band back on course and saving the band's relationship with each other," Ulrich adds.
The drummer; who'd never been in counselling before, concedes that not many bands would go to such extremes to stay together.
"We kind of had to," he says, laughing. "In some ways we have always been survivors, and always wanted to taked it to the next step. We were never willing to let all these issues get in the way. I think it's kind of unusuals, but at the same time it's not shocking to me that we would go to another level to do that.
"The problem was that we realized we had spent 20 years together without getting to know each other very well
"I came gome from a session one day and I told my wife, 'I feel like I'm getting to know James Hetfield again'. There was a long pregnant pause and she said, 'Maybe you're just getting to know him for the first time.'"
Sounds like a man who's undergone therapy. When it's put to him that he and Hetfield's controlling ways might have jeopardized the band, he says: "If you choose to look at it as a problem. It's also a blessing, because it made us as strong as we are. But it also makes it a little tense," he adds, with a knowing laugh.
If it all sounds surprisingly self-aware and grown-up for a band that partied and cursed up a storm for the better of two decades, remember that Metallica has never been a perfect fit in the heavy metal department.
Although fans always return to the fold, Metallica has had, over the years, lots of 'splainin to do.
While the 1991 Black Album is considered a classic by fans, big reaching albums like 1999's S&M, with the San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra, left many confused.
And in 2000, when the band became the very loud ringleaders of the anti-Napster campaign with a lawsuit of their own, fans were angry at a cause that appeared to be less about rocl 'n' roll and more about protecting one's assets.
"It's certainly obvious that we've had a love-hate-love-hate relationship with a lot of people who are very passionate about what we do," says Ulrich, a former professional tennis player from Copenhagen. "Because we refuse to be branded and stuck in this particular way of doing things. And a lot of hardcore fans of hard rock and heavy metal bands want their band and their records and everything in a particular way. If you stray away from that then you are sellpiuts, and the whole world turns upside down, you know? And for the greater number of fans it's been an awesome ride for 20 years, but we still seem to be the band that always gets opinions out of people, which has certainly polarized som fans. So we always just felt that we do what we do. We write a kind of music, and obviously it's mostly heavy metal, but there are some other things that we do and sometimes those definitions become a little limiting, you know?"
While Ulrich is talking, a child can be heard in the background. He's been taking his kid snowboarding while on the road, he says. Metallica may hold serious credibility with teenagers -- last year they were paid tribute on MTV's Icon show, with songs covered by Sum-41, Snoop Dogg and Avril Lavigne -- but both Ulrich and Hetfield hit the age 40 milestone this last year. They have entered the rarified air of metal veterans with cachet so strong and sales so formidable (in the 100 million region), that they are widely considered one of the top five most powerful and influential bands in the world.
"This whole concept about the size of us is something that's been put upon us. ... I still have a hard time dealing with the fact that in some ways our best is still ahead of us. You force yourself to think that in order to stay creatively relevant or semi relevant. We try to keep that 'revered status' as much at bay as possible so we don't end up kind of phoning it in, you know?"
No one would accuse them of picking up the phone when it came time to record St. Anger, released last year after a few setbacks. The album is produced by longtime friend and producer, Vancouver's Bob Rock (of Payolas fame), who produced the band's 1991 eponymous so-called Black Album and broke the band through to the top of the food chain. The album broke at No. 1 and sold more than 12 million albums, fuelled by songs Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. It broke Metallica through to the mainstream, but as is always the case with the band, also temporarily alienated fans of previous albums, such as the epic Master of Puppets and And Justice for All.
St. Anger has generally been embraced by fans, marked by a hugely successful Summer Sanitarium tour last year that featured Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. When Metallica arrived on stage, it was like the gods had finally descended. But for Metallica, they raked in a feel-good vibe more than the cash.
"You could call that pretty close to a wash," says Ulrich. "It was not a very profitable tour."
If the Summer Sanitarium tour was an ego booster, the video for the title song from the album -- shot on location at San Quentin prison among death row inmates -- brought them back down to earth.
"I thought it was kind of humiliating and I guess intimidating," says Ulrich. "It was 'Wow. What am I doing here? Whose bright idea was this?' It was an incredible vibe, it was one that I'll treasure. But it was still intimidating. I'm glad I got a chance to experience it, but it was definitely a bit crazy."
The band's demographic is no longer restricted to long-haired boys who feel a Metallica T-shirt is their armour against a cold, hard world. Their demo these days spans age groups and lifestyles.
To a lesser extent, the Metallica line-up has also had some turnover. Bass player Newsted had replaced Clifford Burton, who'd died in 1986 after Metallica's bus crashed while touring in Sweden. Ulrich, Hetfield, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and Newsted comprised the band until Newsted left in 2001, after 15 years of less than civil band relations.
It was the end of a difficult relationship, and of course, therapy allowed the band a chance to re-evaluate that one, too.
"In retrospect maybe he never really fit into the band," says Ulrich, whose partnership with Hetfield is the basis for the Metallica sound. "Maybe he was never allowed to be a member. He was never given a green light to do his thing. I think he always felt like an outsider, and he was treated like an outsider. I think it's amazing he lasted that long," he adds.
"We didn't really treat him with the respect that he deserved. And he is very, very musical, he listens to reams of music, and he's very very musically gifted, and very musically tenacious, so when he didn't have a creative outlet, then he started looking for other outlets and they were outside the band, and then James Hetfield went all nuclear on him.
"So he was caught in a pretty awkward place, you know."
In the summer after Newsted's departure, Hetfield checked himself into rehab for six months for alcoholism, and the making of St. Anger was waylaid. Some time that same year, the band decided to begin filming the making of the record and brought in documentary makers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, famous for their film Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.
Some Kind of Monster is a close-up look at band relations and struggles.
"I think a lot of people find that a look at a band going through a crisis, a turmoil unlike anything they've seen before -- this is not about the glory -- this is us sitting arguing with each other for about a year -- and a lot of people are kind of feeling pretty strong about this film because they'd never seen anything quite like it."
Producer Rock filled in for Newsted on the album, and eventually the band settled on Ozzy Osbourne bass player Rob Trujillo as the next member. (Newsted joined Montreal band Voivoid).
"Everything in Metallica now is awesome," he says. "The band is doing great, the tour is great, we're playing great. I would probably say we're doing the best we have been doing in years, if not ever."

They actually think that St.Anger was liked...they really should talk to fans some more. People want a new Master of Puppets.

i'm not sure the reformed Dark Angel is the time does not heal line-up, in an interview with eric meyer it says:

Mike Gonzolez was contacted in regards to it, but he has other things going on so he won’t be around. The guy from Morgion is not with us, not around so he is not doing it either. We’ve got a good friend of ours who has been working with the band for years, probably since 89 or something, I’ve known him since 1986, Danny Williams, he is going to be playing bass with us. Well the Megadeth reissues are finally out, and now I can finally get my hands on some classic thrash so my question to you is which megadeth album do you vote
Killing is My Business...And Business is Good
Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
So Far, So Good...So What
and I'm of course going to buy Rust in Peace so I didn't bother putting that ont here.

Hmmm. I would serisouly suggest you get So Far... It has an awesome atmosphere which most put down to bad song writing or production (it is neither). Peace Sells is a great album, although there are a lot of light-weight moments you may or may not enjoy. Both Pretty good albums, you will probably get all albums sooner or later, so it doesn't really matter which one is purchased first. :D

EDIT:

Mercyful fate are indeed awesomeness. Melissa, not only has some awesome riffs, excellent shrieking vocals, but the drumming is totally unreal. Listen to EVIL, oh man that is pure creamage. You could take the guitars out and not only would you be able to get a rough idea of what is going on, but nothing would be lost (except the guitar sound :p). Textbook drumming at it's best!

thought u all might like too have a look at this thing about slayer:

SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman recently spoke to RiftRock.com about the group's upcoming DVD release, "Reign In Blood Live: Still Reigning", and their next studio album. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

RiftRock.com: The band is putting out yet another live DVD soon that features the album "Reign In Blood" played in its entirety with the original line up. What inspired you guys to film "Reign In Blood Live: Still Reigning"? When and how did the idea come about?

Jeff Hanneman: "The DVD idea was just recent, but the idea to play 'Reign In Blood' in its entirety, we’ve talked about that for years, because its only 28 minutes we thought it would be cool to just throw it in a set, but it really caught fire when [drummer] Dave [Lombardo] got back in the band so it was like 'Dave's back in the band? We should do it.' And since the record label and Rick Rubin were having some problems, he suggested we wait until next year, so we said, '**** it, let's record 'Reign In Blood' live with Dave Lombardo and put it on DVD."

RiftRock.com: Does the band have any other plans to record live CD’s or DVD’s of albums in their entirety?

Jeff Hanneman: "Not after we finish this one, we are going to be done with the live stuff for awhile. We get people asking why don’t you put out 'South of Heaven' in its entirety? (laughs) but I don't know, that's down the road."

RiftRock.com: The band is said to be working on material for a new album, How many songs have you written so far for the album?

Jeff Hanneman: "We've got at least 10 songs musically because we always write material first, I have a handful and Kerry [King] does too, but we haven’t gotten into writing lyrics yet. We have plenty of songs to record when we are done touring, the album should be out pretty quick."

RiftRock.com: Has Dave Lombardo re-entering the fold had any influence on the new material?

Jeff Hanneman: "Oh yeah, anytime you have a drummer like Dave that's an amazing drummer, he's always a big influence, he'll tell us where we should have a pause, where we should stop at parts."

Don't get the Rust in Peace remaster. Go to a used cd store and get an original. Peace Sells kind of lost the classic 'punch' the originals, so don't get that either, but the remaster isn't that bad. And putting 4 demos at the end ruins the listening experience.

I really don't get why Dave had to remaster all their albums. I mean, what's the point of fixing something that isn't broken? The only remaster that's worth getting is SFSGSW because the original has terrible production. Just some advice.

JMetallica
08-02-2004, 01:24 AM
Noo... So Far had an awesome production. Well, perhaps it wasn't exactly textbook, but it leant another dimension to the finished album. I've been listening to it a lot over the last 2 days and I think it has risen to the top of my megadeth list as far as quality goes.

I don't particualarly like the idea of releases either. It'd be like giving Galileo the huble telescope or Leonardo da Vinci an apache helecopter. True, it may seem 'better', but lets not screw with history. :D

In a brand-new interview with ElectricBasement.com, METALLICA frontman James Hetfield spoke about the band's latest endeavour, the 'Some Kind of Monster' feature documentary. Asked about the inclusion of a scene in which METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich sits down with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine for a one-on-one therapy session and whether he's had a chance to have a similar sit-down with Mustaine, Hetfield said, 'Not yet. Not yet, and there's no reason not to because him and I share a lot of struggle, a lot of similar path and really dealing with perfectionism and just beating ourselves up. You know the critics in our head that are just so mean to us. So we share a lot, and I see in that part how much struggle he still goes though and how much he really wanted to dump on Lars and how much I wanted to be there and protect my little brother there, you know. Um, but I'm glad I wasn't there. It was good that they had, I mean it is an extremely revealing scene for both of them. I think that Lars finally doesn't know what to do. Lars finally isn't in control and the camera is there, it's great! I mean, to see him that way, to see that human part of him and for Dave too, to really just let it out and then you know, maybe him be able to see that wow, if he could see that. I hope he watches it. You know. Because when I watch scenes of me it's like, 'Dude! I would not put up with that. I would not be in a room with you.' You know. It's a great mirror.'

Iommi actually did a few solo cds, although only one under the name 'Iommi'. Seventh Star is an Iommi solo project under the sabbath name and i think a few after it were supposed to be his solo records, if there wasn't any pressure from the record lable to release somthing for sabbath.

I havn't heard the Iommi CD, but i guess ill get around to it one day. I guess it would sound like sabbath around that period, as Iommi has been sabbath since the early eighties.

i was just going to post that e-card

In a recent interview with KNAC.com, SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman was asked to name his favorite SLAYER album. "I hate to say it, but probably 'Reign In Blood'," Jeff replied. "Not just because of what other people think of it — it's more like at that time that album was stamped into my memory because things were really starting to change for us and things were starting to get professional and serious, and that's the first time we had a tour bus and a real record label. And we put that album down… I don't know how long it took us, but everything was done, everything was fast, everything was good. In fact, you've probably heard this, but our biggest scare on that record is that once we got finished with it we checked the time and it was like 28 minutes. We were like, 'Holy ****. Too short!' [Laughs] So we sat there with [producer Rick] Rubin and thought, 'Does it sound great? Yes. Do we all like it? Yes. **** it!' [Laughs]"

With regards to the songwriting process in SLAYER, Hanneman said, "We just basically — we always start with music. So I'll come up with something at home, or Kerry [King] will come up with something. And eventually — you know, because I can do my stuff at home because I have a new 24-track and a drum machine, so if I get an idea, I can run with it as far as I can get it. Then I'll bring it to these guys and play it, see what they think, and Kerry will add a riff or Dave [Lombardo] will say something about 'Change it here' or 'Change it there' and Kerry does the same thing. And then when we get together we try to get the basic structure of the song done, and then we kinda know where the lyrics go and where the leads go. That's when the lyrics start falling into place, and the song will change here and there; but it's all done spontaneously, it's not like — we don’t sit down around a table before the album comes out and have a meeting on what the album is going to sound like. It's whatever we're into."
