Ok, so.. i recently borrowed this DVD off my friend. Id downloaded a few NIN songs and burned an album off that same friend. (The Fragile album). So anyway, the second i turned this dvd on, i knew it was gonna be great.
1. Into: The intro starts with just the logo of Trent Renzor's record company, "nothing" and has this eerie little beat. It's kinda of cool. Then the lights start combining with the music. Its cool the way the light show is done. But ill get onto that more later on.
2. Terrible Lie
The second the drum beat comes in at the start the crowd are goin off. Trent starts singing which creates a chain reaction and everyone in the audience is screamin along with him. This isn't one of my favorite songs but its a good start. Its a good one to introduce the crowd to.
3.5/5
3. Sin
Everything goes dark and the crowd is screaming their heads off.
This song is exelent IMO. Its got a great beat and its not long before you feel your foot tapping away to the beat. The strobe lights are amazing in this. Everything fits. The lighting mixes with the music well.
Trent is going frantic, jumpin around everywhere and really connecting with the crowd.
4/5
4. March of the pigs.
IMO, i hate this song. Its kinda pointless. Its a whole lot of noise and the lyrics are meaningless. Its basically just a reason to jump around screaming "MARCH!"
2/5
5. Piggy
Continueing on from March of the pigs, Piggy is a slower, but still rough song. There's lots of bass. I dont really like it. Its too scratching and slow to really be able to connect to. However it is better than March of the pigs. ^_^
2.5/5
6. The Frail
One of Trents best songs. The music is soft and melodic, all the lights are on him. But he is also lit up by at least 70% of the crowd holding up ciggerette lights and waving them. At first the song is nice and peacefull, but then another sinthesiser comes in with a drowning eerie noise. The music all of a sudden seems scary and dark. Then it goes straight into...
4/5
7. The Wretched
The beat is slow but still has that dark scary feel. Expecially with the stage mostly dark, only lit with a few strobe lights flickering every once in a while.
The lyrics are kind of pointless and dont really mean much, but still fit the song. The chorus is fast and easy to mosh to. The lights are going off and once again, fit the music perfectly.
8. Gave Up
Meh, this song is ok. By about half way through its kinda of just bareable.
Then, towards the end of the song, three big screens start to move down from above the stage. Flashing with orange and yellow, also fitting the music. Then on the last note of Gave Up, the screens turn white and become the only thing lighting the stage and the crowd.
9. La Mer (pronounced La Mare)
Definately the best song from NIN.
Trent walks over and starts playing this beautiful melody on the piano. In the background, the guitarist is playing what looks like a type of mandolin but im not quite sure.
Now this is where the screens play a big part. Everyone in the crowd has gone from full-on-mode in Gave Up, to watchful and are taking everything in. Every eye on the screens up the back.
The white turns into a soft blue, and little drips are disturbing what turns out to be water.
Once the drums come in, La Mer all of a sudden doesn't seem like La Mer anymore. The beat and everything in the song has changed, but still has the same mood. Everyone is still watching the screens.
The camera is moving up towards the surface of the water and in doing so, disrupting the peacefulness on the surface. The water has turned a reddy, orangey colour, then to green, then blue, and so on. Then all of a sudden, it doesn't feel like the camera is under water anymore. Its a very strange feeling to see. The colours are terrific and everything still fits. Then when the drums quiet down, the screens turn to blue again, and a woman appears. In the extra comentary, we are told that the woman is a siren. An ancient mythological creature that lured sailors to their death buy used of beautiful singing. She's moving around the screen and then before you know it, her head is up right in front of you. It seems as though we are under the water again, and she flys back up to the surface. Dissapearing out of sight.
6/5
10. The Great Below
The screens change to a sea side, with lots of rocks and the waves moving in slow motion. The is a cliff face in the distance. At first the waves are moving slowly along with the music, but as the song goes on and starts to getting faster the waves move faster. And then suddenly, we are stransported to a poppy feild. Blured and weird looking, a figgure walks around on the horrizon, then the camera is dropped onto the ground. Then we're back into the water again. Then a figgure appears, he looks as though he's falling head first. But then as Trent sings the words, "...the great, below!.." the surface of the water meets him, but from above. So know we realise that the person was not falling head first, but feet first, and it was just film upside down.
As he hits the water, everything is switched back to normal, but without us knowing. Its so well done. So now we're under the surface of the water, and we see him moving around slowly. Then as the song finishes, the man dissapears and everything is black. Then..
4.5/5
11. The mark has been made
starts. Still using water, it seems as though we're in a stream. The water is shallow and there are rocks at the bottom. The camera keeps coming up the surface and being pushed back down by the current. Then the screens go black and little red flames appear.
The guitarist is playing a riff thats distorted by wah.
By now the camera has been thrown into a fire, and is moving around everywhere. Sparks are flying and you can almost feel the heat on you.
The music starting to get heaving and you mixing with the screens.
You find it so hard to take your eyes off the TV.
The screens have gone black and its looks as though something keeps moving in the way of a light. Then the screens are red again and it seems as though we've been chucked back into the fire.
This continues for the rest of the song. But everything seems to fit.
4/5
12. Wish
Ok, the screens are moving back into their horizontal possition above the stage, and strobe lights are fireing off everywhere. This song is fast pased and so much fun to just run around to. The band is loving it, and the cround is almost having a heart attack. Its amazing how everything can just go from beautiful and peaceful, to hard fast in an instant.
4/5
13. Complication
Not one of my favorites, but its still a good song. Its a meh song kinda, but still a good one.
3.5/5
