The Meads of Asphodel – Exhuming The Grave Of Yeshua

The Meads of Asphodel are, in my opinion, one of the best British black metal acts, but remain suprisingly unknown to most people. This album, as well as most of the work the band has ever done, is pretty strongly anti-christian, although it’s not the immature and badly thought-out ramblings of some black metal bands, as the meads lead singer, Metatron, has been researching the life of Jesus for years, and intends to publish his findings as a codex fairly soon.

Tracklisting:
1. Intro – Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua
2. God Is Rome
3. Blood Blasted Holy War
4. 80 Grains Of Sand
5. Guts For Sale
6. Utopia
7. Sons of Anak Rise
8. A Healer Made God
9. Sluts of the Netherworld
10. On Graven Images I Glide Beyond The Monstrous Gates of Pandemonium to Face the Bapised Warriors of Yahweh in the Skull-Littered Plains of Esdraelon
11. Book of Dreams (bonus track)

Track by Track:

Intro – Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua
This spooky intro sets the mood for the album, it has various keyboard/synth noises and about halfway through, we are treated to some spoken word lyrics, describing going to Jesus’ (Yeshua’s) tomb and instead of finding nothing (as the bible may have us believe) Jesus’ bones were found. A good intro to set the mood.

God is Rome
A short energetic track, sounds fairly punky to start with, and has brutal sounding vocals, and a nice acoustic section in the middle.

Blood Blasted Holy War
This track starts with synths, and goes into a heavy chorus straight away, and then has a mellow acoustic verse, with spoken word vocals. It then goes into a synth/guitar solo, it then goes back into a structure similar to the start of the song. This song has a couple of synth inturludes with a very middle-eastern feel, and a piano outro.

80 Grains Of Sand
A good, atmosphric track, with well-placed synths, and good vocals. As in the previous track, it has an interlude with a middle-eastern feel, but here it has a prayer being spoken over the top of it, presumably in hebrew.

Guts For Sale
A fairly mellow track here, with a slight middle eastern feel, and a nice guitar solo in the middle, followed by yet more middle-eastern stuff.

Utopia
This track is a cover of a Hawkind song, first appearing on Hawkind’s 1982 album, ‘choose your masks’. A good song with a great solo performed by Hawkinds ex-guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton.

Sons of Anak Rise
“It is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. As begins this song, before going into a pounding death metal style first half of the song. A fairly simply song, with a mellow guitar solo to boot. Hardly a keyboard or synth in sight.

A Healer Made God
In this track, Metatron puts himself in God’s shoes, looking down on the world. Interesting lyrics, not one of the best tracks on the album, but still good.

Sluts of the netherworld
One of my favourite tracks on the album, for sheer brutality in the music, and lyrics. It also has a few slower and quieter sections, which are also enjoyable. This song is fairly generic death metal, with machine-gun like guitars in places.

On Graven Images I Glide Beyond The Monstrous Gates of Pandemonium to Face the Bapised Warriors of Yahweh in the Skull-Littered Plains of Esdraelon
Easily the best track on the album “On graven images.. is an 11 minute long epic of a song. It starts off with arabic sounding synths, and then goes into what sounds like classical piano over a drum and bass beat, weird but it seems to work. About 2 minutes in we are treated to yet more Arabian influenced music, this time backed with the same drum and bass beat as the piano was previously. At just over 4 minutes in we hear the armaggedon in the background, and has a reassuring voiceover telling us nice things such as “If your loved ones are disemboweled; don’t panic, god is with you.. The spoken word concludes with the repeated message “God is ****ing with you., whilst screams are heard in the background, including a bloke shouting “ARGH!! I’ve shat myself!!.
As the spoken word fades out we are treated to what sounds like arabian techno, Synths, and organs until the end of the song. One of the best songs I have heard in a long time.

Book of Dreams
A bonus track only on the first 1,000 copies of the album, it opens with a piano, and is a fairly mellow track with vocals halfway between spoken word and a death metal growl.

All in all, this album is incredible, but it make take a listen or two to get used to, but it’s well worth it. Go out and buy this album now, or live in ignorancce of one of the best recent British black metal albums.

A well deserved 5/5.

So far I've only heard 80 Grains of Sand from the Terrorizer Fear Candy disc, but really like it...I've ordered the full album from Supernal (along with a few other albums) but its been about a week and nothings yet arrived..

On a side note, its good to see someone reviewing extreme metal bands...I was wondering how long it would take for someone to do one. I think the closest thing reviewed before this was probably Shadow's Fall.

I got this album shortly after my above comments, but only now have finally remembered to come back to the review. I just want to point out that I think these two tracks were misprinted on the tracklist, as the song which has the lyrics labeled "A Healer Made God" is labeled on the back as Sons of Anak Rise. I would have thought the mix-up was kind of obvious, as throughout A Healer Made God the phrase "Sons of Anak Rise" repeated fairly often.

Anyway, it is an excellent album. I wouldn't give it a 5/5, but probably a 4.5/5. My favourite track is easily A Healer Made God.
