this cd to me is quite awesome. i would give it a 4 out of 5 only because there are here & there songs i dont like so much. if you like the used or maybe all american rejects then you might like this band. singers voice reminds me of all american rejects (even though i don't like that band really) & the band to me sounds mostly like the used through the screaming & the way there songs sound. if you havent herd of them i'm sure you will if your a radio person. their current released hit is "until the day i die". u can check them out at storyoftheyear.net to see some videos & hear songs or go to rollingstone.com where u can whatch them play accoustic & maybe learn some songs easier through whatching them...that's what i did :D . there album was just recently released & they r currently on tour with linkin park, hoobastank, & p.o.d. my favorite songs on this cd are "and the hero will drown, anthem of our dying day, in the shadows, & until the day i die". it is an enhanced cd that contains bonus multimedia content. here is a taste of one of there songs "for a second i wish the tides, would swallow every inch of this city as you gasp for air tonight"....yup just a little taste....yea. that is a little part off of my favorite song on the whole cd "anthem of our dying day. i got this cd suggested from alot of my friends & so i bought it on sale 4 like ...i dont know...$10 i think...pretty good. yup story of the year is gr8 & if u listen 2 the used i'm sure you'll like this band.

I think the producer of The Used, John Feldmann, aslo produced this Story Of The Year CD, thats why people say the two bands sound similar.

yea they have a VERY similar sound, but lyrically the used has story of the year beat alot
this album is just a little bit to...profecional? i dunno what word i'm looking for, but the used was alot more raw then this cd is and that leaves alot of people bored but lets the pop culture right in through the front door

You didn't read the guidelines, I suppose? Please stick to the format so it's easier to read.:p No offense, but what does Story Of The Year offer that other pop-punk bands don't? They sound like been-there-done-that to me..

CD Review for:
Story Of The Year - Page Avenue (Debut album: released 2003)
Genre: Emo/Post-hardcore/Emocore/Pop-punk
You may like Page Avenue if you love:
Finch - What It Is To Burn
The Used - Self-titled
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
You may hate Page Avenue if you love:
Poison The Well - Opposite Of December
Alexisonfire - Self-titled
As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse
There is alot to say about Story Of The Years debut album "Page Avenue" because of the variety offered throughout the whole CD. The album incorporates the basic elements of a Emocore style. Using powerful screams, singing, pianos, hard guitar riffs, poppy chord progressions, orchestras and even rhyming the **** lyrics perfectly, Page Avenue is a great CD to introduce elements of Hardcore and Emo music to people who are just getting into the genres. But, if your really into true hardcore like early Poison The Well and Alexisonfire, you will find this CD far to Poppy for your liking. Remember, this is pop-punk/emocore. So dont be surprised if a car full of jocks drives by you pumping "until the day i die". Recommended for people getting into emo/hardcore/punk. But if your already past bands like Finch and The Used, steer clear of SOTY's album.
Story Of The Year is:
Dan - Vocals
Ryan - Guitar/Vocals
Phil - Guitar
Josh - Bass
Adam - Drums
Song List:
1.) And The Hero Will Drown - 4/5
2.) Until The Day I Die - 4/5
3.) Anthem Of Our Dying Day - 4/5
4.) In The Shadows - 4.5/5
5.) Dive Right In - 3.5/5
6.) Swallow The Knife - 3.5/5
7.) Burning Years - 3.5/5
8.) Page Avenue - 3.5/5
9.) Sidewalks - 4/5
10.) Divide And Conquer - 3.5/5
11.) Razorblades - 3.5/5
12.) Falling Down - 3/5
Song 1 - And The Hero Will Drown: The closest to hardcore that the band gets on the entire CD, one of the songs they get heavy on. Lots of screaming in this song, heavy guitar riffs and a poppy chorus. Still, its a great song that helps to balance the heavyness and the poppyness. Alot of talk about drowning.
Song 2 - Until The Day I Die: The first single off of Page Avenue. Very poppy. Not really any screaming, except near the end and during the Bridge. Its a catchy song, which is why others will be into story of the year. The song itself starts off with a chorusy guitar riff, then slow singing. It tries to blast you with some harder riffs, which they suceed in. Well written, alot of blood spilled during this song.
Song 3 - Anthem Of Our Dying Day: The second single off of Page Avenue. Starts off with an acoustic guitar playing a simple sounding, almost spanish-like riff, not bad. Goes harder, second electric kicks in with some complicated scales. Once again, not much screaming except near the end and at the bridge. Format seems alot like Until The Day I Die. And once again, more songs about dying.
Song 4 - In The Shadows: Probably my favorite song on the CD. This is another more hardcore song. There is alot of screaming in this one. Not so poppy sounding until the chorus ruins that. But you cant have everything, right? Nice guitar riffs, generally heavier sounding. Very good screaming outro.
Song 5 - Dive Right In: Ok, so this is where the band starts getting slower. This song incorporates Piano and some wave-sounding effects. I guess its cause they want you to think they are the beach? or maybe its just my headphones. But anyways, this song is slower, it does try to be hard, there is a good guitar solo at the halfway mark. The outro is good. Not to bad a song.
Song 6 - Swallow The Knife: Well, by the name i was expecting the hardest song on the CD, but i was wrong. This is the 2nd slowest. Still, its poppy and catchy. Very descriptive. "So our open wounds will bleed until our viens run dry". Decent song, the format of the song seems identical to Dive Right In's.
Song 7 - Burning Years: This song starts off with a great guitar riff, and makes you think its going to be a breakthrough song. It changes. Story of the year hits the first sour notes on CD in this song. Until the chorus makes up for that by using some, yes you guessed it, POPPY riffs! oh well. Occasional screaming. Still, a decent song.
Song 8 - Page Avenue: Title Track on the album (obviously). This sounds a bit like Incubus spawned with the Used. Its a catchy/poppy song. No screaming. Just a general rock song with a reverb effect on the guitar
Song 9 - Sidewalks: The newest single from the album. The slowest track on it as well. Also very poppy. Well written though and fairly emo, its an acoustic/orchastrated track.
Song 10 - Divide And Conquer: The last song on the album thats decent. This song is more hardcore, half screamed, half sung. This song contains NO elements of POP in it. Thank god.
Song 11 - Razorblades: Hmm...back to poppy! but it could be worse. The album started to get bad after Track 10. Oh well, you cant have everything right? Its just another general rock song.
Song 12 - Falling Down: I dont know if this was an accident or what? but this sounds exactly like the offspring sang it. Just give it a listen. It doenst sound like Story of the year at all. Well, at least its not poppy.

Yep. Threads merged.
I saw a few seconds of a live performance of "Until the day i die" on Mtv. I think it was Hard Rock Live. Man, does this band suck. My ears still hurt. I bet a band of 80 year old grandmothers would sound better than these talentless ****s.

they suck hard. apparently they used to be nu-metal, but jumped wagons when they saw they could make more money being "punk"

What the fuk? Finch? Maybe the used since they sound the same and yellowcard the band that thinks they are great because they have a violinist. Finch - What Is To Burn is much better than Story of the Year, The Used, and Yellowcard and shouldn't really be compared among them.

Well that's a minor omission, which really wouldn't have any effect on the review. It's unfortunate, but not important. Chances are it was just a typo anyway.

I'm really surprised this thread has slipped right by all the onslaught it actually deserves. From the genre to the talk of hardcore, this is one wrong thread overall.

i really think that this band sucks. every song sounds the same and fits into the same pattern
Story of the Year's songs are not as good as they could be, but they are one hell of a live band. At the show I saw them at in Greensboro, NC (Linkin Park Tour), they were back flipping off amps and crazy stuff like that. At one point one of the guitarists was spinning his guitar and the strap broke. The guitar flew across the stage and the rest of the band laughed at him. They also played a cover of "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, which was sadly the highlight of their performance.
