Dude Ranch was second album by the pop-punk trio Blink 182 from San Diego. For many this is regarded as the best album the band has produced and with due reason. For pop-punk this album has been almost as important as the holy grail of pop-punk albums Dookie by Green Day. An album filled with catchy hooks, melodies and well written lyrics it's not hard to see why this album thrust Blink 182 into popularity all over the world.
The album kicks off with one of the greatest Blink songs ever. Pathetic. A simple three chord song with a simple melody hook the strong part of this song is it's lyrics and vocals. 'Don't pull me down this is where I belong, I think i'm different but i'm the same and i'm wrong' Mark and Tom sing in the chorus. Pathetic is by no means the only good song on the album. Dammit the third song (You all know it) was the single which made Blink big and it's not hard to see why. Simple chord progression and awesome lyrics make it another stand out song. There's some immaturity in this album which will put some people off 'I'll just jack off in my room until noon' Mark sings on Waggy but for anyone willing to get past it it's just part of Blink 182s humour. Throughout the album the good songs keep coming. Waggy is a stand out song and Josie (Which has a kick *** music video) is one of the best girlfriend tribute songs ever written. Near the very end of the album is another gem called Lemmings. It comes together with some great lyrics and singing from Mark and a fantastic chorus. It's a song about relationships and taking yourself too seriously. Untitled is another great song. It starts slowly and cleanly with Tom singing and playing clean guitar and about a minute in BANG! Everything kicks in and the song triples it's speed and combined with some great lyrics from Tom makes for a great song.
There are a few not so great songs on the album. Boring doesn't seem to have anything that great to it but it's not a bad song just a mediocre song. The song Voyeur is almost an aquired taste. Some people don't like it as it's an immature song but really the weak points are very few and hardly hamper the album. The musicianship of Blink 182 has never been super and probably never will be so if your a metalhead/Opeth fan don't expect to like this album.
Overall a very strong album. Easily one of Blink 182s best and it's not hard to see why. Wether Mark is singing about Star Wars in a New Hope or Tom about watching a girl from a tree outside her window there's something special in this album which will keep you listning and keep you coming back. If you want to know if you will be listning to this album in 6 months time the answer is a definite yes.
