Hello, today I will be reviewing Primus's "The Brown Album" This is more or less an experimental leap for them, because theres more speak of politics and small town life in the 1800's than other Primus albums. Get out your tooth powder and cover alls, it's reviewing time.

The Return of Sathington Willoughby
This song , Les takes role as a politician, giving a speech. This is one of the songs where they stray from experimental back to their funk-metal roots. I enjoy it very much so, it sets the mood for the album while giving the listener a taste of whats to come.4.5/5

Fisticuffs

Heres the real taste of the Brown Album. Structured hollow sounding bass lines, haunting guitar and vocals and concentraed drumming. The lyrics in this song are extremely dark, yet entertaining. One of my favorite Primus songs ever. 5/5

Golden Boy

Classic Primus. FUnky everything and odd lyrics. Good solid song. 4/5

Over The Falls

If you only want to hear one song to get the feel for this CD, listen to "Over The Falls". The lyrics are about going over Niagra falls in a barrel, and it's played on a stand up and a slow paced song. I love it so. 5/5

Shake Hands With Beef

Doesn't exactly suit the 1800's feel, but the lyrics give it the neighboorhood'y feel to it. It's a Primus staple and usually will be in a Primus mix CD from a fan. Everything about it is great. 5/5

Camelback Cinema

The first song on the album to showcase Brains excellent drumming talents. Also the first song on here to show off the distorted bow bass playing. The lyrics are about a Cinema, where a "John" picks up his weekly whore. Insane song. 5/5

Hats Off

Short song, about Les's childhood, good song, a bit on the shortside though. 3/5

Puddin' Taine

Another 1800's sounding song. Ler's guitar part is catchy, Brains drumming part is nothing short of fantastic, and Les's playing is actua;;y du,bed down in this song, but never the less still **** good. It's a very good song, but it lacks somthing. 3/5

Bobs Party Time Lounge

Very VERY trippy. It goes from acidic fast parts, to these druggy slow hazes of draged out singing. Every member is on their game in this one. 5/5

Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread

This song belongs to Ler, mostly because of his very nice solo mid song. It complements everything very well. The whole song is just fantastic. 4.5/5

Restin' Bones

A good song, it drags out a bit too long, but it's good musically and lyrically. But too long is too long. 4/5

CoddingTown

One of my top ten Primus songs. The drums are great, the opening guitar riff is amazing. And Les and his bowed bass are at it again. The lyrics are clever and enchanting, and Les's tone thoughout the song is great. 5/5

Kalamazoo

Words cannot describe how much I love this song. It starts off very dark and murky sounding, then it kicks into a very happy tone. The bass is Les at a magical time, I have no idea what he did but his bass work shines in this. And Ler's happy riff makes me want to put down the bass for a while and learn that riff. 5/5

The Chasting of Renegade

Les has a haunting voice in this one. But again, everyone is playing at a great level, and it has to be another 5/5

Arnie

A very trippy jam. Thats all I can say. Everything about the song is trippy. Hell, Les's dissorted vocals are extremly trippy. Especially all muffled like that 5/5

In conclusion, this album get's 5/5. I simply love everything about it. It is bare none my favorite Primus album.

This is, in my opinion, is the second worst Primus album after Pork Soda (although I haven't heard Miscellaneus Debris yet). Aside from Golden Boy and Bob's Party Time Lounge, there aren't really any songs that make me want to put this album on. It's all pretty mediocre really.

I love the Brown Album, I like Primus too much to decide "the worst album." How could you not like Pork Soda?? :O

And JAStewart, how do you play the return of sathington willoughby, I found a way that sounds pretty good, but I'm not really sure. BTW, agreed it's one of the best basslines ever.

I'm glad too see a positive review of the "Brown Album" for a change. It get's a bad wrap for it's stylistic departure from previous albums and it's muddy production. It doesn't receive the esteem it deserves for being a totally funky, totally rockin' and overall totally great record!

Thanks for the cool review, doc! :thumb:

Right now I have Sailing the Seas of Cheese and The Brown Album. I'd have to say that The Brown Album is much better IMO, it just seems that the music is much more contemporary and more listenable on The Brown Album. I guess Primus is just an acquired taste.

I almost bought this about a month ago - it was on sale, and people had been talking about Primus a lot. I'm glad I didn't after reading these comments, I probably wouldn't have liked it. I'm trying to find Antipop though - that seems like the best way in for me.

One of my least favorites next to Tales from the Punchbowl. Still a good album though.

I recon there are 2 types of primus fans.
1. The Fizzle fry/sailing seas of cheese people (im one of them)
2. The Brown/Antipop people

The brown album is decent but isnt really vintage primus. I suppose after punchbowl (god awful album : primus' worst IMO) they decided to change things up. Not one of my fav primus albums but id still give it 3.5-4/5.

Good review by the way

I cant believe prople are bagging Pork Soda, that album got me into primus.
