Too many bands play so called "metal" and get away with it. This is metal the way it was meant to be. Loud, fast, scary, insane. Two vocalists belt out epic lyrics while guitars wail and drums crash. These guys are easily on my top five metal bands of all time list. Maybe it's because of their non-pretentious, straight forward rock n roll approach. It's so classic, yet it just seems so fresh compared to the over produced, over angry, over played metal that is oh-so-popular these days. It seems like it might be heresy, but this is comparable to early Iron Maiden. Three Inches' first full length display their amazing abilities, with mind blowing metal mayhem. They have wahooohhs, gang vocals, and even an acoustic ballad (with a ukulele), everything that makes up a good metal album.
You can tell they are influenced by Maiden but still have a completely new and fresh style that I'm sure will be embraced by a much larger metal community in the near future.
Track list is:
1. Ride Darkhorse, Ride
2. Destroy the Orcs
3. Headwaters of the River of Blood
4. Heir to the Chaos Throne
5. Skeletal Onslaught
6. Journey to the Promised Land
7. Lady Deathwish
8. Curse of the Lighthouse Keeper
9. Blazing Fires of Evermore
10. Hall of Heros
11. Balls of Ice < GREAT SONG!
Highlights include the insane opening track, Destroy the Orcs, Curse of the Lighthouse Keeper, Hall of Heros with it's brilliant guitar work, and one of metal's best songs in a while... Balls of Ice. When I hear that opening little riff for that song I lose control. I go more nuts for that song than any other song.
Three Inches live is a must(so I hear), and so is this album. Packed with metal to spare, it will scratch that itch that you old schoolers have had since the late 80's, as well as give new metalheads something that won't leave the cd player for quite some time.
4.75/5
