PRIMUS comes out rockin in this 1991 release from Interscope Records.

PRIMUS IS:
LES CLAYPOOL--Electric Bass, string bass, Six string fretless bass, clarinet and vocals
Larry LaLonde--Electric Guitars, six string banjo
Tim "Herb" Alexander--Drums, water jug.

I don't know much about the band, but I do know that this cd is great. I prefer Tales from the Punchbowl though.

A Track by track is hard to do for this album because it's all very similar, so instead I'll do notable tracks.

~TRACKS~

1. Seas of cheese--
The Intro. 40 seconds long. sets the pace up nicely for the album. Only notable because of it's pace-setting for the CD.

2. Here Come the Bastards--
this songs has a very strange beat to it, driven by Claypool on his bass. A cool song, although very repetitive. at parts he sounds like he's gonna start singing "I've got a Lovley bunch of Coconuts"
Also very short.
3/5

3. Sgt Baker--
Sgt. Baker--
this song comes in with 4:13 of rockin out! driven with bass, and claypool's voice keeps changing tones. it's pretty cool. Herb's drumming is excellent through the album, and this song in particular. it's drawn out, and crazy. entertaining though.
3/5

4. American Life--
Claypool's vocals are great once again, and the bass-work is awesome. this song runs 4:31, it's becoming a trend so far that song are getting drawn out and repetive in lyrics and music, but it's entertaining so I guess we shouldn't complain.
3.5/5

5. Jerry was a racecar Driver--
one of the top songs on the cd, it's short, but still amazing. runs 3:11. it's probably one of the most recognizable Primus songs. Has an excellent bassline, and a great theme for the song.
5/5

6. Eleven--
'tis an interesting song, lyrics suggest to be about not liking society, or not fitting in. another bit of drugged up goodness.
3/5

7. Is it Luck?--
this song would be good if it wasn't so friggin repetitive. the music is good, but the lyrics aren't, they make this song more annoying than anything. good music make up for it
2.5/5

8. Grandad's Little Ditty--
the most immature lyrics ever:
As I stand in the Shower, Singing Opera and such, Pondering the possibility that I, Pull the pud too much, There's a scent that fills the air, Is it flatus? Just a touch. And it makes me think of you.
not bad, not good.
3/5

9. Tommy the Cat--
Tom Waits supplies the voice for "Tommy" in this cute little song about a cat (obviously) recalling some things that happened to him. "I remember it as if it were a meal ago" he says. Les sets up that "Tommy" is gonna tell a story. Waits talks very fast so it's hard to make out what he's saying, but its good all the same.
4.5/5

10. Sathington Waltz--
instrumental, pretty cool. can't elaborate as I'm not listening to it right now and I'm going by memory.
4/5

11. Those ****ed Blue-Collar Tweekers--
another cool song, makes up for the previous bad ones, cool music again, drugged up as usual!
3.75/5

12. Fish On--
Fisherman's Chronicles, Chapter II
Pretty cool lyrics, a nice beat. overall another great song, I don't know why I left this out of my initial review.....maybe casue I was lazy, maybe cause I wasn't paying attention, maybe cause I had otehr things on my mind, but this is a good song!!
4.5/5

13. Los Bastardos--
this is more of an outro than anything else.

There are some great moments on the CD, the album is definatley not dull at any time, Primus is a very talented group, and this CD cements that.

This Album is not their best, but I enjoyed it. musicianship is awesome, and the songs are just plain drugged up.

3/5

Bad review, the reviewer does not understand Primus in the least.

Hillbilly Rock? Give me a break. Did you know that Primus is from San Francisco? I guess not.

Is It Luck is a great song!
American Life is a great song!

I think that this is a Tony Hawks 1 Primus fan. Note the 5/5 for Jerry (Sure is deserves that but there are much more tracks that deserve higher)

why do people think that every band has to fit into a genre? funk-alt-hillbilly rock-progressive-etc...
who cares?
primus has a style of its own, which i think is amazing. les claypool's bass playing makes most bass players sound like a kid with some stretched out rubber bands. this cd is a very good primus cd, however if you dont like primus already then you probably still wont after listening to this. and yea, this guy sounds like a tony hawk primus fan. im almost sick of that song, ive heard it too many times.

I'm not going to complain about the review. You'll already have had enough of that, in spite i don't like it and i think it's the best primus' album. I must also say that i love your brave genre description (hilbilly rock!!!. WOW!!)

Also, I'd just call them "alternative". That's what alt. music is: something that doesn't really fit into a genre.

ahh well...it doesn't matter much to me....It's the peopele's opinion of my review...ands in my opinion, Tales from the Punchbowl has more differences then this album, therefore, making it a better cd.

hey, here's an idea: you don't like my review? get off your lazy *** sand write a better one, giving the album the credit you think it deserves. then you can have a right to complain about whatever.

my review was my opinion, so get over it. I tried to be as unbiased as possible, but meh.

also: for the record, I've never played any "Tony Hawk" games, so I don't know what the hell you're all on about with that.

quit bitching about how you don't like my review and get a life. These threads are for discussing the ALBUM, not complaining about the review.

EDIT: besides, if you make a better review, not only will you have something better to admire, but other peopel will also have a "better" opinion on the album. just because you poeple don't agree with my review doesn't make it bad.

so, get over yourselves and tyalk about the CD, not my review!

thank you, have a nice day.

This is an album of epic proportions. When I first heard that Primus was on a top 40 station, with "Jerry was a race car driver", I flipped! There is hope for mediocre American radio. I saw them at St. Andrew's hall here in Detroit in 92' when they were supporting this album. Tad opened up for them. One of the best shows I have been to.

-A friend of mine who is an amazing bass player can perfectly play tommy and sing simultaneously-he's done it live at 2 shows flawless. neways id have to say that seas of cheese is the best primus album (frizzle fry a close 2nd) and songs given 3's and 3.5's and such deserve much higher and 11 a song written in 11/8 time is one of the best songs on the cd.

Meh...the review is just an opinion. Primus certainly takes a good ear to listen to. I love 'em! They have to be the last new band I ever took a real liking to. (hmm...came out in '89?)
This was their best album, Frizzle Fry second. I can't believe I discovered them in that awful Bill & Ted movie. They were supreme when they opened for Rush. One of the greats!

useless trivia, Tommy the Cat comes from a story about some drunk guy who the owners of a bar tried to kill of to collect insurance money on him for.

This is actually the only Primus album I own, I haven't the cash to acquire the others, but Pork Soda ranks with this as the two best Primus albums imo.

Anyway, I might be picking up this album for Christmas. Either that or Frizzle Fry; I'm not sure which one I would like more. I already have Antipop though, so no "introduction" is needed. What do I get?

robnathanson, are you actulally French? Or is it just under your name for show. If you are, then you might be forgiven - but if not, then **** it man, buy a dictionary and learn to spell!

Also, you should understand that the reason people are burning your review in many, if not most, cases, is that you JUST gave an opinion - you didn't detail much at all about the songs, and mostly just said "this was repetetive". Well done for writing a review, was it your first go? It looked like it.

Oh, and don't try and come back at me for being a n00b, that is pathetic. Just because I haven't been posting for as long as you doesn't mean I can't crap all over your puny intellect.

Primus rocks, but there is no standard for reviewing. I only give 5's if the song is an utter masterpiece, which has occurred less than twice on any album thus far. People give everything 5's because they love every song, and give 4's to the "lesser" songs. I have an idea, how about a rating system with two ratings: awesome and less awesome? I would give few Primus songs a five.

sailing the seas of cheese is probably my favorite primus album

when people say primus is an aquired taste, their right. in order to appreciate the music you cant expect the ordinary, just listen and appreciate the excellent musicianship. people who are into power chord bands might not be able to appreciate les and crew right away, but they should at least give them a try and see what their missing

very hard to classify. they're one of most unique bands out there today. not to great of a review however. hillbilly rock? i had a good chuckle the first time i saw that. the do have some bluegrass, or as you would like to call it "hillbilly rock" influence in them.

very good cd, not so great review.
