Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is probably the most famous of the 80's punk rockers the Dead Kennedys albums. This album is harsh, fast and intensely political. For those of you who like punk, thats probably just why youll love it.
Taking what the Sex Pistols and Black Flag started, the dead kennedys take it up a notch with harsher, faster tempos and mocking lyrics. The Dead Kennedys are pretty much the epitome of punk music, combining fast power chords and very passable guitar riffs and loud vocals. Jello's lyrics on this album deal almost entirely with politics during the 80's however some song, such as When ya get drafted, may sound eerily similar to what is happening today. Although the topics may not make as much sense now as they did when they were written, they nevertheless get across the same feelings. No one could ever confuse the dead kennedys with the pop-puk of today.
One comment on the vocals is this, you will either completely love Jellos voice or (more likely) really hate it at first. Please dont let this turn you away. If you listen to it for a bit longer Im pretty sure itll start to gow on you, thats what happened to me.
Some favourite songs are Kill the poor, Holiday in Cambodia, Chemical Warfare and California Uber Alles. They are generally all good, if not easily accesible. Dont jump to this after years of listening to Blink-182.
Rating: 4/5. People who love punk will love this album. People who hate punk...shoudl stay WAY away.

This album rocks out. I would suggest it to any fan of hardcore punk.
The entire album is great except the first song which is the weakest song on the album.

I'm not a big punk fan, but I really like this album. Jello's voice is great, it sounds really sarcastic/mocking and suits what he's singing. And his name is cool.

Kill The Poor is awesome in my opinion.
Kill The Poor is awesome in my opinion.
It's a good song but it seems out of place on the album.

I love Jello's voice, but has anyone noticed that it kinda sounds like Homsar from Homestar Runner?

kill the poor:
this is a great intro for a cd, the guitars are really good on this song, the funny thing is jello's voice sounds slightly diffrent on this song for some reason. 8/10 i get bored of this song after awhile
foward to death:
i love this song, everything goes so good together, the sounds always mix up 10/10
when ya get drafted:
i like the bass in this song, its not my favorite song on the cd, but to me this cd would be nothing without each song. it all blends together so well. 7/10
lets lynch the landlord:
the lyrics to this song are different from all the other songs. the guitar has a solo that reminds you of the beach boys. 9/10
drug me:
one of the best songs on the cd, the whole song has a fast beat guitar, and jellos voice talking so fast this song is so unique 10/10
your emotions:
i like the chorus to this song its a pretty average song 6/10
chemical warfare:
i cant stand this song for some reason, but i dont wanna be biased so... the bass keepsgoing with the same fast bass line and the chorus is chemical warfare repeated over and over 7/10
california uber alles:
another great song (i lived in california) jello's voice gets me right into the song once i hear him. also on the in god we trust inc. ep they had the same song on there but it was slightly different, they used that lounge kinda sound for part of the song
i kill children:
once again another great punk rock song. i cant explain this song the dead kennedys are so damn unique, just like this song 9/10
stealing peoples mail:
not the best song on here, its a little to average and the chorus is over used alot, i do enjoy the guitars though 7/10
funland at the beach:
awesome song, every instrument played out so wonderfully, you can hear every instrument playing at the same time instead of only hearing one instrument and hearing crap in the background 10/10
ill in the head:
this song is that musical, jello is using his change of voices in here. when i hear this song i think of carnivals for some reason  6/10
holiday in cambodia:
BEST SONG EVER the intro keeps you waiting, then you hear that beautiful bass and the songs begins and keeps you listening all the way through 10.10
viva las vegas:
obviously is a cover, a very good cover if i never heard of DK i would have thought this was some band totally opposite of dk, the changed the sound of the song IMO its better than the real version 8/10
overall i give this cd a 10/10 its a wonderful cd i really think people that arent even fond of punk rock will like this cd
reccomended songs:
drug me
funland at the beach
california uber alles
holiday in cambodia

first discvered the d.k's in the late eighties when i brought in god we trust which could possibly be their hardest record ever. after listening to most of their stuff i would have to say that fresh fruit..... is definatly their best. excellent hardcore from start to finish and ends with an excellent cover of viva las veagas which shows their ability to laugh at themselves.

This was the first dead kennedy's cd i bought. At our school library is has this book that talks about heaps of bands. It talks about how evil the dead kennedy's are. then it says something about i kill children. It made me laugh a lot.

On the version ive got there are two discs.
The second disc features -
1.Holiday in Cambodia(single version) Not that much different from the original version. In it's favour the intro's a lot less muffled which does add to the song although the Pol Pot chant isn't as long and doesn't build up to as intense a climax. Still gets full marks despite this.5/5
2.Police Truck I first heard this song in Tony Hawks Pro Skater for the Playstation. When I bought this album, I didn't realise it was the Dead Kennedys so I was pleased to here a familiar song. Just a great, great song that has the usual obscure DK riffs with a solid song structure. 5/5
3.Kill The Poor(Single Remix) Really no noticeable difference from the original. I would have to agree though, I still think this is quite a weak song compared to the rest of the album although it's great live. The recording doesn't do the song justice in my opinion. 4/5
4.In-Sight Explodes with a fast paced riff and remains fast paced until the chorus. About a boy who is slightly rejected and different from the others, the lyrics are typical Biafra. A great interlude/ending riff leads the 1:40 song into the highlight of the second disc. 4/5
5. Too Drunk Too **** Classic. Punk doesn't get much better than this. 5/5
6.The Prey What can I say? Just an incredibly strange and dark song. A decent way to end off the album but as a song on it's own there's not a lot to be enthusiastic about. 2/5
This is a bonus Disc that competes with the album itself. Great disc, great songs!5/5
