I only have time to hear the first one, but I'm Really Diggin it! Sounds real kool.. i can see myself jamming to it :thumb: nice work. Except the singer.. the singer sounds like a punk singer for the most part of the song.. it might just be me.. Great song though Congratulations

I'm really digging this stuff, man. The guitar is great and it sort of reminds me of Iron Maiden or Manowar with less cheese. The only thing I would suggest is that your vocalist be just a little more into it, he sounds a little bored, but other than that he has a great voice. Congrats on keeping it heavy without screaming btw :thumb:

I really like the music but i'm not as into the singer but it sounds really good otherwise.

listened to "fire to the coals".

sound's pretty good except like some others said, the singer, except the effect he had on his voice was pretty cool.

drums and guitars were fine though, like some others said iron maiden-esque

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad everyone liked something so far. I'm the singer/guitarist by the way and i also don't care for my singing all that much, lol (on that album anyways). Since that recording i think i'm much more pleased with the way my voice has developed. I think I've gained more expression & range.

Here's another song to check out (from the same CD) that features the vocals a bit more. There's some obvious problems such as some out of key (or wierd sounding) vocal harmonies and I don't really care for how the nylon string guitar tone turned out but other than that I think it's the best sounding song on the album. Just to warn you it's not a heavy track.

Descendants_Of_Death.MP3: Looks like you guys got some good reviews, my turn now ;). The intro is clean, and it sounds like you guys have practiced (unlike other bands here ;)). I LOVE the trasitions from a phrase to another. I want to see your band's rig! Hey is that an electronic kit I hear? He/she is pretty good! The vocals are pretty right for the genre of music this is. I am liking the echo effect with it, makes it more creepier than it is ;). Your bassist sounds nice and clean, VERY nice. You guys have your stuff together, start gigging if you haven't already! I see potential and (underground) stardom in the future!

Fire_To_The_Coals.MP3: Before I begin, I'd like to agree with the statement(s) above about the singer. He needs to get into it! Okay, here we go. I'm short for words, but this is great stuff. It's nice to hear a band's drummer on the forums here that can keep in time. I really like the fast tremolo little riffs. Vocalist: GET INTO IT!! You have a great band behind you, so you should be on FIRE with emotion!! Great guitar solo, I'm really enjoying everything from this band. You're drummer is amazing, I wish he were in my band ;). Everything here is great, very very well done.

Rusted_Icons.MP3: Oh boy, I can't wait to hear this one. I can already assume it is going to be great. A bass solo with synth? That is a rare thing to hear! Rare, but very nice. Wait, that wasen't synth.. That was a clean guitar with a chorus effect maybe? Very nice job bass by keeping your riff going. Less vibrato in the vocals when he comes in. Wow, that was a nice transition from the clean to the dirty sound. Very nice. Again, less vibrato in the vocals would make it sound more like it needs to be in the song. Nothing more needed to be said, it is all very nice.

Sands_Of_Time.MP3: Very nice, clean guitar sound. Vocalist has a strong voice, always a plus. I like the solo, clean acoustic guitar sound. Very well put together song.

Overall ratings(out of 10):

Vocals: 7
Drums: 9
Guitar(s): 9
Bass: 9

"Hey is that an electronic kit I hear?" You got it, good ear!!!

"dammit betrayer...i haven't got to see you live yet although i really wanted to, are you guys still with supernova?" We'll be playing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto on the 23rd if you're around then. We've been in contact with Supernova fairly recently and it looks like we might be involved in some Metal Fests they have planned for the upcoming year as well as hopefully something this summer at the Molson Amphitheatre again. Nothings booked yet but it looks promising.

"sounds a LOT like alice in chains" lol, that's what I thought too. Just the way some of those vocal harmonies are. Alice in Chains are a great band. I think your one of the first (if not the first) people who's brought up that connection. Cool!!!

Very insightful amazing reviews from everyone. Thanks, I really love reading peoples feedback on our music.

Thanks, no we recorded them in Windsor at
www.spectresound.org (http://www.spectresound.org). Since then he's moved his studio and it looks really cool what he's done with it. He moved to a new house and converted the garage into a studio (there's pics on his site of the construction). We're planning on heading back there soon to cut a single for a possible video.

I think his production just keeps impoving, you can hear a big difference in quality if you compare the tracks I put up here to our Paranoid cover (which is available to download off our site). Paranoid was the latest thing we recorded there and I think the quality surpasses that of our Rusted Icons album (and it's been quite some time since we recorded Paranoid.....still at his old studio location) so I'm really looking forward to hearing how things will sound at his new facility.

Ah Mother of God! You guys know how to ****ing rock! You are the best band I have come across on these forums by far. You alked about a Cd? Can I order it online? I would easily pay like $10 bucks or something for this. So far, I like Descendants of Death, that is ****ing rock, right there. The solo parts in the second song are amazing, and I think you guys easily have the potential to get big. Thats just my opinion, but let me know about the CD or availability or whatever, rock on dude.

Agreed, Betrayer owns me and I am now a fanboy. I'm gunna order your album later on tonight, maybe the promotional package. I'll join the mailing list too, as I'm really interested in watching you guys go big. I've the songs you posted to my playlist, and am addicted to Fire to the Coals, because the first solo is the best I've heard in a LONG time. Deffinetley keep me updated how how things work out with you guys.

Yeah, I happen to think the vocalist goes good with the music.
Also, how long has your drummer been playing? I'm 15 and been playing for about 7 months now, and the 1st time I set down on a double pedal I could do that, I think he needs to add some more technical stuff, IMO, that basic beat he was doing most of the song, needs to be changed a lil. It needs to follow and compliment the guitar, instead of just playing at the same speed. I don't know how to explain it, like...I don't really know how to explain it. Really, I'm just a drummer, so that's all I can tell that would be wrong. And again, this is just my OPINION and criticism don't take it personally, your band is very good!

Lol I only listened to the 1st song too.

"Also, how long has your drummer been playing?"
He was playing for about 3 yrs at the time that was recorded.

"And again, this is just my OPINION and criticism don't take it personally, your band is very good!"
Ya, i understand, that's what this forum is for, to critique peoples music. I don't take any offence to even the worst comments about our music (and we've had some harsh remarks). Everybody's tastes are different and I respect that (as long as someone can intelligently say something about the music and not just say something like "your band sucks" and that's it). I think i'm my worst critic. There's so many things I would have changed looking back on that recording. I guess that's what future albums are for, to hopefully progress as musicians and always try to create music that you're happy with (or at least bear to listen to,lol). I think that's an on going struggle for musicians until the day they die, it's hard to be totally satisfied with your own work (maybe impossible).

JeffofBetrayer
01-22-2004, 10:31 PM
Since some people liked our Paranoid cover I figured I'd put it up here too for easy access (instead of having to go to our site to download it). We recorded it for a local Black Sabbath tribute album but sadly the album never materialized.

Here's one more, a live cover we did of Megadeth's Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. The sound quality is pretty bad but maybe some of you will like it anyways.

"i think you opened for maiden , motorhead and dio, that must have been sweet"

Ya, that was an amazing experience!!! We didn't get to play on the main stage though or meet any of the headlining acts :upset: (we played on an indie side stage). It was still great exposure for us because the stage we played on was right inside of the main entry gate to the Amphitheatre. It was a really wierd feeling (pretty scarry lol) seeing what looked like thousands of people lined up outside this gate about to be let in. My adrenaline was really pumping at that point lol. The sound really sucked for us though, I couldn't hear **** and there was nothing we could do about it. They needed a MUCH bigger P.A for that.

03-04-2004, 12:51 AM
Thanks JetBlackWarlock88 & Griffin Page. I'd have to agree with both your posts. The Dickinson style singing is what I've really been pushing towards since those songs were recorded. Before then I was mostly influenced by Mustaine but I think that was also due to the fact that I had only been singing for like a couple years at that point and I wasn't at all confident in my voice. I can't wait till our next album, it'll sound a bit different musically (in a more Euro Metal direction eg, Nightwish, Edguy, Yngwie Malmsteen) as well as production wise (I don't care for the tones we got on Icons either).

I listened to all three songs and it was interesting. Unlike some of the people who replied, I actually like the singing, especially on "Descendants of Death." The vocalist sounded like Megadeth's singer. The guitarist is very good on the oh-so-Steve Vai-ish solo near the end of "DoD." I think your cover of "Paranoid" is **** good too. And yeah, my speakers and I jumped when the volume hit too. :-p But your group is rather impressive...keep up the good work. I agree with some of the people who replied-->You guys have a lot of talent, and could easily get famous with your level of skill.

I just listen to your songs man. I don't see all the hype, I mean the guitars you can barely understand also riffs aren’t very good and you guys have no hooks, drums are very basic, vocals are very boring, couldn’t hear the bass very well. I guess if your trying to be technical your ok but no one wants to hear technical music, not radio friendly and very poor production. I would work on better sound and heavier guitars. Glam rock i'd give you a 2 out of 10

Just heard some of your MP3's. Not too bad...
Some of the best I've heard on this forum...
2 suggestions....
Guitar Tones on the recordings....need to be a bit more clearer, because the phrasing
& notation is lost in the mix.....
Lead vocals.....
Since I am a 44 yo hard rock vocalist who did a ton of 80's melodic rock the first time around, the singer need to dig deeper & go for more emotion, & some high end screams would flavor your music quite a bit.
Othwise, great rocking sound...
Great job.
I have a thread on here for my band Death & Taxes...I would appreciate some critique of my music from the Betrayer camp.

Just out of curiosity, were you listening to eye of the beholder when you wrote tribulation? its an awesome song! i listen to it all the time!

I think it was Norm (our bassists) who came to practice one day with some of the basslines for Tribulation, then I came up with some guitar parts right then. I'm not sure where he got his inspiration for this song (maybe he was listening to Eye of the Beholder lol.....I'll ask him).

Hey thanks flawlesxguitarist \m/ Ya, Megadeth was probalby my biggest influence on Rusted Icons. Since then I've been really inspired by bands like Nightwish, Edguy & Helloween...especially in the vocal department. I still love Megadeth though and want to continue writing Megadeth inspired music. I just like a good mixture of things but always with the same elements such as melody & guitar solos.

I hope we can record some better quality live performances soon, but usually there's never that good of a mixing/micing job to do it....or we screw up at some point in every single song lol.

That is very, very good. Descendants of Death has gotta be one of my favourite songs now i reckon. I think someone commented on the drumming earlier i personally think it starts off very well, i like the simple kind of beat hes got going. I think it should get more complicated though nearer the end of the song as it does become quite plain. I also love the vocals, the singing goes perfectly with the song. I've just started a band and my singer doesn't like anything but blues... which is a pity cuz he makes up some great lyrics. I need a singer like you who is more interested in the Maiden and Megadeth scene!!! come to England so i can kidnap you after watching one of your gigs then make you the singer of my band Mwahahahahaha  On a more serious note are you ever gonna play in England because you've got one guy whos buying tickets right here.

I'd love to play in so many places, England would definitely be one of them. We just have to finish building our raft:) Can I hold you to the ticket sale? But seriously it would be a dream come true. We have no plans to play in England yet but we'll see what happens.

"I listen to you guys probably everyday, keep up the good work, anything new post on these forums!"

Cool, that's awesome, thanks!!! I'll be sure to post something new on here (whenever we get our sh*t together lol). The next thing will probalby be a single that we're working on for a possible video. The major thing that's been standing in our way for this song is coming up with the right lyrics.

"Those were great songs man. Did you write them?"

Thanks naboo, I wrote most of the guitar riffs, all the leads, most of the vocal melodies & some of the lyrics. The rest was a collaboration with the rest of the band members or ideas of their own.

"How old are you?"

I'm 26

"All the members in my band are 14 and you guys just blow us away."

You are way ahead of me, I only started playing guitar when I was 17 and I only started singing when I was about 21. By the time you're my age (if you stick with it) you'll be amazing!!!

I think when you hear your own voice (even just speaking) played back to you through something it automatically sounds different/wierd to you since you're used to hearing your own voice right from your mouth...lol that kinda sounds funny but I don't know how else to explain it.

But I'd say I'm much closer to where I want to be with my singing now (more towards a Maiden/Edguy style). It's been so long since we recorded that material. I don't even know if I could sound the same (as my voice on Rusted Icons) even if I tried now.

Hey Jeffof Betrayer,
I noticed in all your posts, you never give any critique or comments about anyone
else' music. A lot of the younger rockers might appreciate some comments & advice on their music from someone who is farther along.

Ya, that's because I only care about my band :thumb: jk.

I have listened to other peoples stuff on here. Some I found to be very good and others....let's just say they could use a little work. I guess I should make some comments. I just find it very hard to say something about someones work. I'd rather only make a comment if I was asked by someone for advise or suggestions on something specific. I don't know maybe I'll change my mind but right now I just can't bring myself to comment/make suggestions on other peoples work without them asking. But then again I guess that's what this forum is for. Hahaha, ok I'm making excuses....I'm wussing out because I don't want to offend anyone I guess

No, we don't have any tabs....yet. Some people have asked us to tab out our songs and I would like to but I just can't seem to find the time to do it. All the time I have I try to devote to writing for our next album, practicing, promoting the band etc. But I think that after we record our next CD I'll have time to tab out some stuff off Icons since writing/recording a new album won't be a top priority any more.

(Might have to kill the sound guys...) I'm only 18 as is the rest of my band, I just hope we can one day match ur skill!

Have you ever thought of singing?

I'm actually not too sure what was done in the studio to get that bass tone lol. But I'm pretty sure we went direct without an amp. What our producer ran it through and did to the signal after that I have no clue. You can check out the studio we recorded at here www.spectresound.ca

Do you stick to any particular scales or simply improvise until something sounds right?

Thanks for the replies!

"I was just wondering when you make your solos how to you do it?

I approach certain solo sections in different ways. When writing a solo I sometimes can think of a melody in my head and then apply it to guitar. Usually that works best when there's a slower more melodic type lead section. Sometimes I just jam over the rhythm part improvising with familiar scales/patterns to write a lead. But generally I'll have everything for a lead worked out note for note before entering the studio.

On the new EP we have a second guitarist sharing lead duties and he shares some of the same methods for writing his leads but probably some differences. He had everything worked out note for note aswell.

When you harmonize the guitar in your songs it makes it sound like theres 3 sometimes more guitarists, i tend to hear

Lead

2nd guitar-lead harmonized

Rhthym- power chords

quite often

Doesnt this make producing the same sound live impossible?

Yeah usually one guitar part is missing live. We've been advertising for a keyboardist for a long time. Some of our songs were actually written with keyboard parts (rhythm/chords & lead, as well as harmonizing with lead guitar) with the presumption that we'd have a keyboardist in the band by the time we were ready to record but since we didn't the harmonies (which were intended for a keyboardist) were done with guitar. Also since we couldn't find a keyboardist we've advertised for a third guitarist with no results.

So it's kinda like this hard decision to make. Do we still record all the parts we want to have on a recording or leave them out for the sake of reproducing the same sound live....or write differently all together? On Rusted Icons we had the same decision to make because at that time we were a three piece (me being the only guitarist). I decided to go with recording multiple guitar layers and then we would look for a second guitarist (which we have now). So that progression may continue still into the future where we add either a keyboardist or third guitarist to the lineup.

So far we've had pretty good feedback and reactions to our live shows and I think people don't notice too much that there may be parts lacking live that are on our recordings. But I personally can see that the addition of another musician could really add to our live sound.

I see

/imagines Burden of the Pacifist with a keyboard and keyboard solos

A keyboard in your music would be great, I truely wish you luck in finding a keyboardist.

I think more people should play keyboards, I myself own one (its easier to learn music theory on a keyboard/piano than on guitar) but i still haven't had the time to pick it up, eventually i will pick it up but for now i just play guitar.

We have a show coming up \m/

Betrayer will be performing at Urban Metal's Metal Night at The Polish Hall in Oshawa, Ontario on April 22nd, 2005. Betrayer will be performing with Pandaemonium, Virtuosity, Creeper, Thryvn, Torn Black and Heavens Loss. Tickets are only $5.00 in advance or $7.00 at the door.

Phone: (519) 791-5848

Location:
60 BANTING STREET
OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA

Other than that I've been writing for our next full length album. Hopefully we'll get some kind of label support as a result of the new EP to record and release the next album but if we don't well go ahead and release it ourselves. Not exactly sure when we'll have that done but we're aiming for within a year.

Thanks, yeah that one probably has the biggest Maiden influence of anything we've written so far. Actually it was probably a combination of Maiden, Helloween and Edguy (which seem to have a heavy Maiden influence themselves), but especially Edguy with the power metal type double bass and anthem like chorus. I actually wanted the chorus to have a bigger choir type vocal sound......copying Edguy exactly lol, but didn't know quite how to harmonize it so we just did some doubling.

& thanks for the support if you do end up buying our CD's!

Hey thanks, yeah that's one thing I've really been working at. Trying to have a more operatic/soaring vocal approach.

Wow, thanks that's about one of the highest compliments we could receive!

I think his singing is almost a combination of Dave Mustaine and a little Bruce Dickinson.

Yeah that's what I'd say too. When I first started singing it was Mustaine all the way. That's mainly what I was trying to sound like, along with a bit of Hetfield. But then I really started getting interested in expanding my range & learning how to sing without straining my vocal chords so Dickinson and a wide range of other singers became an influence towards that direction.

Are you serious or was that meant sarcastically? It sounds like you like Yngwie in one of your other posts. But I guess you maybe just like his guitar playing and not his singer(s)?

But anyways, yeah it would make sense that I sound similar to Yngwie's singers since I practice to his stuff a lot vocally. So I take that as a big compliment because that's a style/sound I've been striving to achieve with my voice.

Shawn (drummer) and I have been together since 1996, then Norm (bassist) joined a couple years later, then Bill (guitarist) joined a couple years later, soon after we came out with Rusted Icons.

****ing great cover of holy wars am lovin it *headbangs*

Thanks :thumb:

maybe try some vocals like CJ Snare, Michael Matijevic or Sebastion Bach.

I do practice to some Firehouse & Skid Row. Don't have any Steelheart though, but I know that guy is an amazing singer. Sebastian back is actually one of my favorite singers. I can't sing with the raspyness he has though...I've tried in the past and each time I almost lost my voice, so I just sing to his stuff with a much cleaner tone....although he also does change from clean to raspy a lot. But yeah I love all those singers, I like many many singers and all different styles of Rock/Metal. Some of my other favorites are, Klause Meine, Tobias Sammet, David Coverdale, Don Dokken, Ronnie James Dio, Vince Neil, Brad Delp, John Bon jovi, Sammy Hagar, Jani Lane, Bruce Dickinson, Ozzy Osbourne...those are just some of the bands/singers I like practicing to.

I also recently heard about Dream Evil from my bassist. He bought their new album 'The Book Of Heavy Metal' which I haven't heard in its entirety yet, but whatever I did hear sounded so awesome. I particularly like the singer's (Niklas Isfeldt) voice which I think sounds a lot like Klause Meine. I need to get that album! And probably followed by thier other ones.

Man just heard Partaker of Evil and i'm not into this sorta genre. A grindcore lad myself, but dude, this is funky as f*ck!
Can't help to nod me head and the vocals are pretty good i think. I'm in an old school mood now
rock n roll!!!
Talented guitarist very clean how the riffs go from one to another, all perfect timing.
Not too sure on the bass before the solo though.
Woah  that solos ace then the bass pedal arrghh! your band is very good.
Also is the kick drum triggered?

I do think you have a very good voice as it is. I just suggested some of my favorites . I like when the music is heavy with clean vocals. To me it sounds so much better, and not to mention its easier on your voice.
I also noticed that you cover Run to the Hills. I was wondering do you use falsetto to sing the chorus? Because that stuff is hard to sing! But by hearing your songs, you do seem to have a strong head voice.

Hey thanks itsPLaNK! Glad you liked some things you heard so far even though it's not your favorite style.

The kicks aren't triggered on the new EP, all real acoustic drums. But I think that maybe our producer might have tried something like a trigger on the kick just for 'Burden of the Pacifist', not sure if he kept it though.

Not sure if you checked out anything from the Rusted Icons album, but those are all an electric kit...which sounds okay to me but I much prefer the real thing, what we got on the new stuff.

Yeah those are some good suggested singers! I'm like you, I like the heavy music/clean vocalist approach too generally.....although there are exceptions. And just like you mentioned it's easier on the voice, which are two reasons why I've been moving in that type of direction more and more since I started singing. I think that band Dream Evil I mentioned perfectly demonstrates that sort of a style with some of the heaviest (but then again heavy can mean different things to different people) music I've ever heard and then this crystal clear voice with a soaring range on top of it.

For 'Run to the Hills' I don't use any falsetto. Yeah that one is very tough to sing, probably the toughest chorus I have to sing out of anything we play. My voice has to be in top condition to pull that one off properly, if there's any wear/damage then it's just not possible for me. It does help though that we tune down a whole step. But I still do practice that one in standard with the CD.

I don't see why people don't like the singing.. I think it's good and it suits the music.

Ill tell you my problems with the vocals

Plain and simple, the vocals arent emotional enough.

The vocals arent agressive enough for the style of music.
The need some emotional agression in them.
Try less vibrato also, it doesnt fit with the music.

To tell you the truth, you have the best vocals i have ever heard of any music submitted on this forum. However, it could still use improvement.

damn you guys are really good you have a really good sound its hard but very melodic i guess your guitarists are really good and so are drums and bass, but i kinda pay more attention to the guitars since i play i guess it just kinda catches my ear but anyways I have listened to all the songs on here and they are all pretty good. A lot of people on here including yourself jeff are saying that the singing isnt that great but its not bad really you definately sound better than a lot of singers today, you guys remind me a lot of iron Maiden, good job

I also love the fact that you kept screaming out of it, I love your voice.

I'm really digging it, and I enjoy metal, but I'm not Die-Hard (except for Megadeth), but I love it. Your voice is pretty close to Dave's. You guys should do a cover of Rust in Peace...Polaris!

I might buy it.

Hmmm, is there anyway I could pick it up somewhere in Toronto without ordering from the site? Because I'm going up in a few weeks...

Same here. Jeff has an amazing voice. You can see how much he has improved if you listen to any song from Rusted Icons and then listen to Headed for Disaster

Bump. Because I totally love this band!

Only had time for "Partaker of Evil" and "Burden of the Pacifist". Tight!
"Burden" is a killer tune.
You went into my favorites. Hey, $11, I might as well buy the EP to play on the road.
