View Full Version : (metal) Isis - Oceanic

Isis' masterpiece "Oceanic" combines sludgy, muscular riffage with gut-wrenching deathcore growling by vocalist Aaron Turner. The dense sound found on the record is heavily inspired by extreme metal giants Neurosis, but Isis manage to create a sense of rising and falling tension far more seamlessly from track to track. Drumming is tight, as are vocals, and the whole mush of hazy, crushing and hypnotic tracks blend together to form one solid record with absolutely no unnecessary "fluff". Isis dominate with a majestic yet thankfully unpretentious sound which manages to find its own right both with quiet and more heavy parts, and the band seems to command both forms of expression equally well.

Over an hour in length, "Oceanic" is quite the monolith of sound, and a true gem of its genre. What really makes this album is Isis' ability to create such an enormous and intense build-up in suspense, as well as combining melancholic softness (punctuated in places by singer Maria Cristopher) with straight-up, ****in' relentless metal as it should be!

That was a pretty stupid review. What do you even rate it?
