ive just been learning my keyboard since about 3 weeks ago- my main instrument is bass, and i have all the theory lernt alleready so its coming on pretty well, adn ive been figuring out most stuff by ear, and i came across some free muse sheet music so ive been learning Apocalypse Please, its kinda hard. shud i find this hard or easy? o well.

i can play - Zpehyr Song- Chords left hand, guitar right hand (chorus - chors left vocal pattern right)

Cant Stop- Chords left vocals right

well anything i alleready know on my bass i can play on m keyboard if i put the practice in. but as i said ive been trying to do aapocalypse please by muse-
just one more blabble- in standard notation, it annoys me when the sharps opr flats are placed ad the begining of the song, wouldent it b alot easier if every sharp and every flat was like written down, like u know if u were in Bb major, every B on the stave had a b sign next to it?

sorry to blabble on

I love Muse
12-21-2003, 11:46 AM
The point of having the key at the beginning of a piece is so that it doesn't have to be written by every note.

Also, Apocalypse please is fairly easy, but a good song to start with.

ok its just that its making me learn apocalypse please a lot slower, to be honest i lernt like the first 16 bars then fell asleep and couldent b bothered again, but im gonna finish it coz i like it.

:amaze: Most piano concertos and sonatas... that just made me laugh... Alot.

To be fair, how many pieces are there out there called 'Sonata (in Zmajor/minor)'. That was just amusing. And for that point, how many concertos? Flippin' thousands.

I think if you ask a professional pianist "What can you play" you'd probably get a very dirty look and then you'd hear Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# minor or the 3rd Piano concerto bash forth from the nearest piano :naughty:

Hey, don't rip classical music, Cheese. Without classical music, we'd still be in the baroque period, banging stuff out on harpsichords, and dancing to suites. And Bach would still be around . . . no wait, I would have killed the prick. His music really sucks. Especially his 48 Preludes and Fugues. He must have had no life, just to write two preludes and two fugues in every key.

The real question should be, what can I not play? ;) just kidding. I've played piano for about 12 years and I think the most difficult classical piece I learned was the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, 3rd movement that I took to competition. I am confident in my abilites in the sense that I think I can play almost anything you set in front of me, though I'm sure someone would put something ungodly like Stravinsky on the rack and I would just shoot myself in the face.

I don't really play other people's music anymore, though I do dabble with a little Ben Folds by request sometimes. I just like to improv and such. Well I take that back, I had to pick up a piano minor at the university I am at to gain more scholarship money, so I have to play classical music again. Dammit.

Pop punk is okay, I'll admit I'll listen to pop, as long s it's not 'machine-made' music. I don't mind synth instruments if they're done live. And pop punk sure is better than the excuse for hardcore punk (ahem . . . death metal and techno metal) that is coming out of some garages these days.

Hmm, Alla Turca, Third Movement from Sonata K331, right? It's hell. The octaves bit in A Major are fun enough, and sound impressive, but when that section repeats with the octaves broken up, it makes people cheer. Though when I hear this piece played as chamber music, it's often done by a 42 piece orchestra. I wonder what if would have sounded like on harpsichord or clavichord back then . . . I'd love a clavichord..

Ah thank God! Someone with respect for accordion players!
:thumb:

It's really a beautiful instrument...so versatile and evocative. You can play something really upbeat and danceable (Cajun and Zydeco music come to mind), or something really melancholic and ethereal, or something intensely emotional (Piazzolo's tangoes come to mind there) and no matter what you play, it comes from deep within the soul and is projected.

It may sound funny to say this, but I get such a rush from playing...the first time I ever picked it up, it felt so right...so natural.

Thanks for letting me vent here...I don't feel so bad now.

I love folk instruments, an accordion would be cool. The have a fairly large range (takes a while to get used to the bass buttons though), and are far more portable than a keyboard or piano. They're hard to get a pick-up into though, my mate's dad tried it, he had to take the bellows off, drill a hole in the body, but it was worth the effort. Good luck with the accordion, a great instrument.

Thank you...the bass buttons are still a puzzle to me, but it seems like everyone I see playing in a band never touches them...you have to watch someone like Garth Hudson, who grew up playing, to see someone use them anymore.

I guess I am an old acoustic soul, because I don't like to monkey with MIDIs or pickups or whatever...I subscribe more to a "keep it simple, stupid" mentality. And if you want someone to hear you in the background you can do it without all the rigamarole.

I gotta tell you, gang, I feel very comfortable here...most of the time I kinda feel a little funny saying I am an accordionist, but here, I kinda get the chance to hold up my head a little more. It's kinda nice.

[QUOTE=Pasha]Thank you...the bass buttons are still a puzzle to me, but it seems like everyone I see playing in a band never touches them...QUOTE]

Folk bands use them a lot, especially a few I've seen. all I know is that the one closest to the middle with the notch in it, second row in is C, and then each row up are the minor, major, etc. degree of the scale.

I think to use them properly it's probably best to memorise exactly where every one is, and be able to hit any bass note. But even when you see a lot of piano today, it's either played one hand when used for lead solos, or two when used as a chordal instrument. More bands are being based on this idea of instrumental 'monophony'. Talk about going back to the basics . . .

You're right...the one bass button with the indentation is C...most tunes you can get away with about three chords or maybe 4, and they are usually not far apart so that's not a big problem...I would have a problem memorizing where they are, but I really shouldn't because I can type on a computer keyboard pretty fast, and that doesn't seem to be a problem (except when the fingers move faster than the brain).

I agree with you on the one-handed problem...I can't say I notice it on piano all that much, but then again, one of my favorite musicians is Bruce Hornsby, and he does some things that are unreal...what a great musician he is! :thumb: I had the chance years ago to see him live, and for two and a half hours he blew the roof off the place.

But if you watch anyone who plays accordion to suppliment the sound of a song, especially in a rock band, you will see that they don't even come close to hitting the bass keys...which actually takes away from the beauty of the sound of the instrument. When you play a chord with the right hand, and you add in the bass side, it can send chills down the spine, it's so resonant and beautiful...I have an older Soprani accordion which I love...it's got seven treble switches and two bass...when you hit the bass chords where all the reed banks are engaged, and hit the master switch on the treble side, the sound is just incredibly rich and full and amazing. I don't know how to explain it...it's just something you feel in your soul.

wing_of_jupiter
01-31-2004, 10:21 PM
Yeh, I got Bruce Hornsby's anthology for christmas, he is awesome. I do agree that he is great, but on most recordings of his songs I hear, he uses left hand only for an intro, or parts where the only other instruments are drum and/or synth-pad. If you listen to solos, or the main parts of the song, the bass and guitar are covering the lower parts, and he is only using his right hand . . . a handy way of fooling most simpletons, and keeping a full, rich sound without making it overly hard for yourself.

Pasha
02-01-2004, 12:37 AM
In a way, it's a shame that most keyboard players seem to think they only need one hand to play...I admit my right hand skills are a lot stronger than the left, but I really would like to strengthen the left skills. Maybe someday...

I think that's one of the reasons I really admire someone like Garth Hudson of The Band. If you watch him he does use both hands to create some beautiful music. He is one of the reasons I took up the instrument in the first place...listening to him just fascinated me.

Fair bit of rock/pop; simple stuff like Coldplay is a breaze, but I have to admit Muse is a challenge without some sort of music.

Lotsa classical, a bit of Chopin, like the Waltzes in E minor and C# minor, lotsa Beethoven (last one I learned was third movement of the Moonlight sonata), and I'm currently labouring through Chopin's Ballade in G minor (nearly learned half of it!)... greatest piece of music ever composed.

Can anyone play Moonlight Sonata Movement 3? I believe it is called Presto Allgiato. I heard Rubenstien play it, and wow it was f*cking awesome.

This girl in my school called Deborah played Moonlight Sonata Movement 3 for a recital.....from memory. She played the entire thing and it lasted at least 20 minutes and it was absolutely fantastic. She is an amazing pianist though......first in europe in her age category.

I can, it's hard, but not as hard as most people think. Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata is wayyy harder ... that's my next goal.

Im an entirely self taught pianist, so not a whole lot. I can play Prelude no. 4 in E minor by Chopin, lovely piece. Im working on the first movement(not the 3rd) of Moonlight. I can play a variety of pop pieces, and pretty much all the Muse stuff.

All muse sheet stuff can be found at http://zmeba.free.fr/frame.htm
