Exclusive: Murder By Death

Bloomington, Indiana's Murder By Death made waves with their 2008 album Red Of Tooth & Claw - their first for Vagrant Records and fourth in total - and are preparing to repeat the same with their fifth, and perhaps most accomplished, record, Good Morning, Magpie, which is scheduled for release on April 6. Sputnikmusic is proud to present an exclusive new track, entitled 'The Day.' Murder By Death have always gone about their music in an unorthodox fashion - Western-themed concept records will always be a risky venture - however Good Morning, Magpie may just boast the strangest backstory to date. Frontman Adam Turla decamped to the Tennessee mountains last summer with a tent, a fishing pole and a notebook, and while there he sketched a rough draft of what the group would hammer out and shape into a lean set of 11 bourbon-fuelled, western-themed American rock tracks. 'The Day' is the closing track on Good Morning, Magpie (assuming people still actually listen to albums from start to finish?) and finds the group in imperious form, integrating some of the off-kilter rhythms that made their early albums so distinctive with the more direct, aggressive blues-rock style of Red Of Tooth & Claw. It kicks off with wistful strummed acoustic guitar before taking a sinister turn (typical for this band) with menacing gothic piano chords, while Turla ditches his midwestern brouge for an angry southern soul bellow. Murder By Death will appear at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX (watch out for Sputnik's coverage) from March 19 and will tour the album through mid-May. |
I've never heard these guys before... very good stuff.
Get on it, Trey. They're great.
I like what I just heard. Should I just wait for this album to drop or is there a better one that is already released?
Who Will Survive And What Will Be Left of Them? is where it's at.
In Bocca Al Lupo or Red Of Tooth And Claw are worth checking out while you wait for this to drop.
Excellent. Cannot for the life of me wait for this.

god damn i love this band
Damn, that's a good track
Started listening to them last night, went through two albums and I'm surprised of how much I took in and loved. I'm not usually into these types of bands, but they're so full of talent and goodness, it's pretty hard to ignore.
just a head's up but the album's very good guys
all their albums are amazing so get them all
this one isn't a concept album like the others but it actually flows better in some ways.
Thank you all for sucking our cocks.
hell of a lot better than the first song they put out
"lean set of 11 bourbon-fuelled, western-themed American rock tracks."
What happened to whiskey??? :(
much better than the other track they released
I used to like this band, then they sucked and now I like this song.

intro could have been more impressive with a little more space between piano left hand melody and drum ..........fiddle could have come in sooner to accompany the second verse .................... fiddle dont have as much impact to match the great drum roll leading it in ...... love the fleetwood mac warmth in it though .......... love the acoustic guitars.........very rootsy love it ........ lisnin as i type ..........big drums lov big drums ............vocal is very gutsy love it .............. a touch of electric guiatar riff in the back would have given this a nice poppy feel too .. nothing wrong with giving a rootsy song like this a poppy vibe ......love the oppneing ...... the oppenning verse feel is lost some how on the second verse ............ maybe coz the vocal melody change .......yah the drums definitely sound out on the there own and well over the lack of fiddle attack/presence ...... but great feel of that fiddle .............
