Fear not; ‘Sputnik Discusses’ has not been retired just yet. This blog’s absence over the past fortnight was simply due to the most deadliest of all diseases: the dreaded man-flu. Let me tell you folks: It got me good and proper this time around. You know that a music lover is sick when they’re just lying there for days on end doing nothing at all, yet can’t muster the energy to throw on an album or ten as background music. The dreaded lurgy isn’t completely gone either, so I had to think of a way to turn my lack of writing – and thinking – energy into a positive. What I’ve decided to do is write on a topic that I have no real strong feelings on, thus leaving the majority of the discussion up to you! It’s therefore fitting that the topic at hand actually came from one of you… So much thanks to elcrawfodor for the suggestion.
More than that however, ‘Sputnik Discusses’ is going even more interactive than it already is. It’s simply not enough that you get to write what you want in the comments section. In this discussion’s case, some of your responses will actually make the blog itself, since I will update it (most likely on a daily basis) as the discussion heightens.
So what is the topic of discussion at hand? Well, as the title suggests; It concerns album art. Even back in my purchasing of vinyl and compact disc days, I was never really huge into what an album’s front-cover depicted. It definitely didn’t affect my purchasing decision, that’s for sure. Even nowadays, I only tend to glance at album art, sometimes nodding/shaking my head in (dis)approval, but always moving on quickly. If anything, I like the “simple, but clever” method of album art, probably best depicted by Toto’s 1981 LP ‘Turn Back’ [left]. However, I know that I could even be in the minority on this entire topic, with many music fans feeling that album art can occasionally be an extension of the music itself.
Ok, I better leave it at that, since I need the room to post the album art in the next few days. They will be of my choosing, so the judge’s decision is final. I’m looking to roughly add about 5 album covers, so let me know what do you think is the best album art of all time? As per usual, please try to keep your responses concise. One answer would be great, but let’s say no more than three. Furthermore, for those who are huge fans of album art, educate this naysayer by letting us know why.
As they say at the end of those dreaded English essays: DISCUSS…..
===========================================
Our first reader-generated content comes courtesy of the very first reply to the blog, so thanks to Rowan5215 for not only being so quick on the trigger, but also providing the art to Pink Floyd’s 1994 album ‘The Division Bell’. Created by English graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, the cover is especially striking, while being simultaneously simple and complicated. Two large metal-head sculptures were erected and placed out in a field in such a way that a third face also appeared. To top it off, a cathedral was also framed on the horizon.
Our second contribution took a lot longer to come than I thought it would, but ExplosiveOranges finally picked up the slack and mentioned King Crimson’s seminal debut LP ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ from way back in 1969. A painting by Barry Godber, the prog-rockers immediately knew that the artwork would go on to become the Schizoid Man of the album’s opening track. Extremely striking, there’s also a rather mesmerizing quality about the cover which you can’t help but to examine.
I know this was supposed to be an avenue for people who could not access the staff blog to have an input into it, but what am I to do if a staff member puts forward an album cover that takes my fancy!? Our third contribution comes from our resident metal nut Voivod, who wanted to list a whole bunch of album art, but only listed one. That one was 1995’s ‘Draconian Times’ by British metal veterans Paradise Lost. Created by English graphic design studio Stylorouge, the bright and eye-catching cover appears to incorporate many forms of art, while keeping in mind the gothic nature of the quintet’s music.
Next up in our little Top 5 countdown concerning album art is a cover that was suggested by CK and backed up by JS19. It is from the LP ‘Écailles de Lune’ by French shoegazing post-metal act Alcest. Created by Fursy Teyssier – who is both a part-time collaborator with Alcest, as well as being the founding member of the not too dissimilar Les Discrets – it is a lovely piece of art where all different shades of blue come together to form sharp images. It’s definitely a cover which is meant to put you in a certain kind of mood to listen to the music contained within.
In what will most likely be the final contribution to this blog concerning the best album art, rockandmetaljunkie – along with a handful of others – contributed the seminal 1970 self-titled LP by metal pioneers Black Sabbath. While it appears to be a house in the background, it is actually a watermill on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. And while many might feel that it is Ozzy Osbourne in the foreground, it’s actually a woman. While no members of the band can recall her name, it was apparently a fan who visited Black Sabbath backstage. Everything about the cover itself is strangely beguiling. The feel of the picture is especially three-dimensional and the color tones are deceptively striking. It’s just one of those pieces which could range anywhere between perfectly normal and rather nightmarish.

Iron Maiden - Live After Death: There are several amazing and playful Iron Maiden-covers, but this one has to be my favorite of them. There are several nods found around the cover such as H.P. Lovecraft and Faust, while having a shackled, burning Eddie rising from his grave. Metal. As. FUCK!
The Clash - London Calling: Punk rock captured at it's finest moment, while including two nods to the past (smashing the guitar as Pete Townshend did, using the same font as Elvis). Racousness!

As Santana said, this painting fit like a hand and glove to the music!

Also album art can pretty much give extraf flavour to a good record but on the other hand. I'm usually not bothered with bad album art though.

I'm fond of pretty much anything John Baizley's touched, too. Pig Destroyer's Phantom Limb is simply the best there is in their discography as far as artwork goes; Prowler in the Yard and Terrifyer have contemptibly unforgettable cover art that suits the bitter, harsh nature of PD's sound, but the aforementioned Phantom Limb's more of a charmer.

I just think it represents how the album sounds very well
04.29.15
I also knew that some metal album with fire-breathing dragons would get mentioned.
NightProwler, they're 3 great ones. 'London Calling' was always gonna pop up, while it's just a matter of witch Maiden cover was gonna get mentioned first. As for Transatlantacism, how do you know they're heartstrings? ;-)
Good call on Still Life Davil.
tempest going straight to the actual artists. Those names do pop up a lot though.
"Abraxas by Santana": And it's colourful too.
"storm of the light's bane": Just a bit too scary for me Kyle. "Above the Weeping World" is effective though.
"Totem Skin - Still Waters Run Deep": Meh. It needs colour.
Sorry AfterTheAscension, I ain't going through all of them... But I will say that 'In Shallow Seas...' rules.
04.29.15
"Funeral Diner - The Underdark": Interesting. But like you suggest Mort, it probably needs to be in conjunction with the LPs sound.
"Maximum the Hormone - Buiikikaesu": Love it Angel. That falls under the ol' "simple, but effective" category.
04.29.15
Its a pretty dark screamo album basically. Think city of caterpillar if they had any balls
04.29.15
Ben Frost - Theory Of Machines
maudlin of the Well - Bath
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Paysage D'Hiver - Paysage D'Hiver
Too many to count, to me the Artwork is affectedly an extension of the music, both influencing each other reciprocally. A lot can be known about a record just from it's artwork

All Of The Sudden, I Miss Everyone by Explosions In The Sky has gorgeous artwork in the form of a really nice watercolor painting.
And of course, Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward by Thee Silver Mt. Zion is beautiful as well. I love the way the silhouette of the crow looks against the red background.
04.29.15
04.29.15
Alcest - Ecailles de Lune
Little surprised nobody has mentioned either
04.29.15
"The original American Recordings by Johnny Cash": I like it. He looks reaper'ish.
"All Of The Sudden, I Miss Everyone by Explosions In The Sky": I've been waiting for some painting oriented covers. That one's nice, but I think there will be better pop up.
" Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward by Thee Silver Mt. Zion": Pretty cool & simple.
04.29.15
I like both of yours CK, especially the Alcest one. I'm thinking there may be better similar ones though.
04.29.15

That statue on the cover is actually in the city itself and the album is basically a walk around Portland. It was described like that by Haughm. So in that way, the artwork fits the album perfectly and is beautiful in my opinion, It is grey, cold and fits the theme of nature found in Agalloch's lyrics.
Other artwork I really like is Opeth's My Arms Your Hearse, many of their albums have great artwork, but that's simply my favorite of theirs.
I would also pick Neurosis's The Eye of Every Storm, the cover fits the music so perfectly.
Other artwork I like is artwork by H.R. Giger, it's among my favorites as well. Santana's Abraxas deserves a mention as well. Lastly, both the vinyl and cd artwork on Isis's Panopticon album is really cool to me.
04.29.15
Probably, I think the artist for the Alcest albums has done a number of other pieces
04.29.15
04.29.15
I feel that the optical illusion cover matches the albums sound perfectly. The cover is hypnotizing, yet colorful; a perfect companion to Animal Collective's bright album. Plus, I just love the color palette: that green and blue just screams summer.
Radiohead- Kid A
Since I have a physical copy of this album, I've been able to see it up close and personal multiple times, and it's definenetly brings feeling of jaggedness and glitchyness. This closely resmebles the album's sound: cold, glitchy, and the surreal inhumanity of it all.
The White Stripes- I always found the way this band looked as aesthetically pleasing: I just love how the red , white, and black made everything pop. But it's best expressed in the White Blood Cells cover. Not only does the contrast of the black figures and the red wall really bring the colors to life, but there may be a message coming from the cover. What do the black figures represent?
As you can see, I really enjoy album cover that really pop out colorfully. Plus, I feel like a successful is one that can not only catch the attention of bypassers, but capture the sound of the album.
04.29.15
Ulver - Shadows of the Sun: naturalistic and ancient, the warm orange glow fits the music perfectly
Opeth - Ghost Reveries: I love the gothic feel of this cover, very medieval and mysterious
04.29.15
"Agalloch - The Mantle": Well explained Tottengott.
"Les Discrets' debut": That actually may be one that you have to see in reality. Looking on a screen might not give the colour & detail properly.
"Animal Collective- Merriwether Post Pavilion": Sorry, not a huge fan of it myself.
"The White Stripes": Good call here. The link between their album covers is interesting in itself.
"The colour of an artwork can determine the overall way I see a record. I feel it's the single most important thing about the look of an album"
Great point JS19 (later added to by wtferrothorn)... And I agree. Reds, blues and blacks would be the standouts, but pretty much any colour you can name evokes a feeling of some sort.

Watercolor paintings have already been mentioned in this thread, and I'd like to add Bon Iver's s/t to that category. The album, from the first time I hear the first note, has always had an incredible ability to evoke the feeling of a green, humid, lonely summer, the aftermath of a long, grey winter. The theme of traveling around the United States enhances this atmosphere, and so does the beautiful art.
Wind and Wuthering by Genesis will always have a special place in my heart. The front cover shows a tree on a grey English moor, and when you open the album/cd case that tree is bare of leaves but a cloud of birds is lifting off from the tree, revealing that the tree was never covered in leaves at all, just birds. It's probably something that's been done several times since, but I still like it.
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is a classic case of artwork influencing one's perception of teh music. Yes, it's "so pink" as you already stated but that's the whole point. A blurry, distorted guitar and the suggestion of sex, heat, humidity, and hallucinogens are already in your mind before you even listen to the first track. As the album is an attempt to immerse you in its murky universe of sound, I think that suggestion is important, abstract as it is. I wouldn't listen to the album the same way without its artwork.
04.29.15
Pure madness indeed dikko. Although I don't mind the 2nd one.
"The Great Old Ones' Tekeli-Li": I'm not much of an art lover, so meh.
"Bon Iver": Good call. This one's nice and your my 1st reaction is to look everywhere for all sorts of things.

As for 5, easily:
Alcest - Ecailles de Lune - The blue is just overpowering, almost to the point where it doesn't feel right to listen to the album in the daytime, it doesn't feel right. It's not an exciting blue, like a comforting, but cold wind on your face blue with a marble srt of texture which has a cold sort of feeling. Remind me of marble to the touch.
Converge - Axe to Fall - I struggle to explain why I like this one so much, but the blue/tan colour scheme just pops out at me. It's earthy yet exotic at the same time, and the scratchy texture of the whole aesthetic really adds to the bite of the record, while the tan colour makes it seem dirty and *real*. Have this one on a 6 foot flag in my room
Gazpacho - Missa Atropos: Yeah so this album is reverb drenched and atmospheric and warm. I think the cover perfectly puts you in that mindset. The sunset colour and the shapes just out of reach in the sky give the music something to tantalise you with, cryptic lyrics also are intriguing. It's like when you wake up and see something but you can't focus on it, but incorporated within a sort of hazy sunset vibe.
Stars of the Lid - And their refinement/The tired sounds: The simplicity and colour difference of these two albums is probably hat makes me veiw them as completely different things. I don't even have them occupying anywhere near similar spaces in my brain and I think it's mainly down to the artwork. Tires sounds sounds sunset-y and optimistic but with a tinge of sadness and I think it's the yellow in the cover, while And Their Refinement is floaty and spacious but with a finality to it. I really do think especially with drone and ambient records, the colours and feeling the covers give are the single most important factor in deciding how you react to the sounds within.

I looked at it in terms of album covers and the way that they're changed, especially with remasters years down the road. Opeth's Still Life came to mind, mainly because it wasn't given an entirely new cover, but a heavily edited one when it came out again.
Here's the original: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d7/Opeth_stilllife.jpg
Here's the remaster: https://rambleastreviews.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/cover-big.jpg
More or less the same cover, right? Well, the small changes bothered me, especially the way they interact with the music. The original cover is darker, with a lot more black around the edges and a darker shade of red. To me, this fit perfectly with the contrast between the metal and the folk, the light and dark that Opeth are so good at. The remaster brightens everything to a new shade of red, one that just doesn't look quite as grim as the original. Anyone who knows the story behind the album knows it's a grim one, and the original fits better. Hell, even the changes to the cross aren't insignificant: in the original, it's slightly angled, hinting that the way religion is portrayed in the album's story won't be positive. It's true: the story involves someone shunned from a religious community, "An outcast with dogmas forged below." The remaster has the cross upright at a perfect angle, lacking that hint that religion, not properly construed, can be (literally) as crooked as that cross.
So that's a fun rant from me, shout out to DaveyBoy for using my suggestion for this post!

My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours

Manners - Pale Blue Light
-The bleak mood of the record is captured perfectly on this cover.
04.30.15
"My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours": The colours are indeed great on this one, even if the actual art itself does nothing for me.
"Manners - Pale Blue Light": I like this one. I haven't even heard the album, but even the title fits.

Burst - Lazarus Bird: Oh wow, I really like that one. It's a shame there's a bit too much black around the edges. Good call JokineAugustus
The Extol and Death covers are pretty cool too.

I'll concur with the discussion surrounding Opeth's Still Life (remaster). The most interesting part for me is the cross' reflection. Eerie. Gave me the spooks the first time I noticed it some years ago.
In general I like album art that shows, on some level, man's often futile desire to conquer the landscape.
Here are a few that come to mind:
Midnight Oil - Diesel and Dust
Amia Venera Landscape - The Long Procession
Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi (1998 remaster)
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Honorable mentions:
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Pearl Jam - Binaural
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Holy Jake Taylor sighting. Hope all has been well mate.
Tool-Lateralus: I like this more than Aenima.
Midnight Oil - Diesel and Dust: I knew some Aussie would mention it. An iconic cover. The colour schemes work really well.
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations: I like both this & Absolution. This one definitely captures the eye though.

I'm a huge sucker for album artwork. It affects the feelings I get when listening to a record for sure. The colors used on a cover most often paint the mood of the album I'm listening to, and I feel like it can drastically change how interpret the sounds.

Blind Guardian: Some of their stuff is cool, especially Imaginations From the Other Side.
Colour seems to be popping up a lot when it comes to the effectiveness of album art. I'd definitely agree with that.

Bon Iver - Bon Iver
A beautiful album, and cover art to match - I always thought the landscape reflected the lush quality the music has.

Barrow - Though I'm Alone
This record was pretty dark and brooding, the destroyed, overgrown structure on the cover conveys that quality well.

The Receiving End of Sirens - Between the Heart and the Synapse
A complicated cover for an ambitious album (the full booklet was pretty great and interesting to look at).

Enemy of the Sun has already got a couple of mentions. It scares me, so it's effective.
I'll think about it Flug. The last 2 I put in the blog will be more by popular opinion than my own thoughts.

Might make a part 2 of this at some point.

Simple yet effective. Its a picture of an arm passing a torch, and another arm reaching out for it in the complete opposite direction. I think its showing how misguided we are as a society, with our government encouraging people to go over seas and kill for reasons we aren't even sure of. Also the arms remind me of the arms on the statue of liberty, which could symbolize a loss of peace in our country since the torch is missing on one side. Idk who knows.

ravedeath, 1972: I like it. Captures the attention. It's simple, but geometrically pleasing.
Dance Gavin Dance: Sometimes I think I'm playing Where's Wally.
Parallels, nice list. Of those 5, I really like the Crystal Castles LP. It's spooky, but it's also a really nice shot.
Talons, metal is the way I'm heading as of this very moment.
And So I Watch You From Afar's debut: It is pretty cool. Not too detailed, but it works.
Catch For Us The Foxes by mewithoutYou : Strangely alluring
Choirs of the Eye: It doesn't do a great deal for me.
Ne Obliviscaris: yeah, I like the effects they have going on.
Mastodon: I think they are all effective in capturing the attention and making you look again.
Hopesfall: Sorry HopeLust. They haven't been mentioned probably because none of the covers really do much for me.
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand: Great call SAPoodle. I really like this one. Love the effect of the yellow.
Fugazi - The Argument: Nice breakdown dc. I think you may be on the money there.

WHAT!? Man, no wings to speak of has epic album cover art, not to mention Satellite years' art perfectly encapsulating the album's sound, especially the tracks Andromeda, Red Shift, Escape Pods for Intangibles and The Bending.
No wings to speak of's booklet has further images of the actual album art, but in different landscapes.. Its just so cool.

The artwork for The Division Bell is good too though and is the best thing about an otherwise underwhelming album.
05.13.15
I just like how striking that 'Division Bell' cover is Jamie. The 'Obscured by Cloud' cover doesn't do a great deal for me tbh. I haven't been thrugh PF's discog in enough detail to comment on the album's relative quality.

So I kind of favour simple covers, not too much detail and weird designs like some in the psychedelic area.
My favourite is in my eyes the definition of epicness: Rammstein - Rosenrot. Others might find it laughable, but that cover is just perfect in every possible way.

Monstar, that's actually a pretty good call on Coldplay. There's nothing too complicated about their covers, yet they're all extremely fitting. EG: MyloXyloto is an absolute hotch-potch.
Thanks for the agreement Kris. This discussion has opened my eyes a little, but it's still not something that I'm actively gonna think about in great detail.
As for that Rammstein cover, I actually like it. More of those blue tones I spoke about previously.
