A heart-wrenching exposition, the video for James Blake’s latest single is an artful, soul-steeped take on the apocalypse. As the lone motorcyclist approaches what seems to be a party of sorts, she finds herself in a time warp of what seems to be the last second before certain all-inclusive death. Perhaps a message expounding the sanctity of our time on this planet, regardless it is refreshing to see such a creative take infused with science-fiction. Many circles have branded the single as lending far too much from the likes of Tom Krell (How To Dress Well), but as the adage goes, imitation is the best form of flattery. “Retrograde” takes this ambient pop formula and couples it with the most evocative soul performance of the fledgling new year. If James Blake performs this at the end of the world, I’ll surely see you there.

Reminds me of Melancholia.

Brilliant song, brilliant video, and I hated his debut

ambient pop?

yeah definitely channels the experimentation of how to dress well, but refines it at the same time.

Track really is killer. The R&B and soul side of him displayed here and on Enough Thunder far surpasses his early stuff. To me, at least.

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own?

i'm partial to his debut lp, but i love all things blake. much like burial, he can do no wrong in my eyes.

yeah both this song and video are fantastic, so pumped for the new album

robertsona
02.12.13
song seems creatively the exact opposite of enough thunder EP; that sounded like blake either being lazy or sorta in pissed-off squandering-good-stuff mode (the results were still good) but this is like blake trying his absolute hardest. pretty cool

Sanders

Agreed with robertsona, though Enough Thunder works 'cause of that. Haven't taken to this song like I did early single "The Wilhelm Scream," but I am properly excited for the next album. This man is just great. Don't see at all how Blake is pulling from How to Dress Well what he wasn't already doing, and progressing toward, with s/t and Enough Thunder.

though I miss the dubstep stylings of his past, I love love love this new direction he is taking. All this new wave of r&b is just starting to tickle my fancy too (How to Dress Well just "hit me" recently) so this new album is going to be released at the perfect time for me.
