For the average, carefree Sputniker (age averaging as low as 14, the beginnings of facial hair sprouting on their pasty chins, a copy of F#A# (infinity) tucked securely under their arms, and the cover of Converge’s Jane Doe plastered somewhere on their body) the forums have always appeared as something of a mystery; a completely separate side of the site, populated by unfamiliar names and avatars, a strange yet very deep sense of community, and also home to the avant-garde masterpiece that is/was Grumblecunt.

But in all honesty the inverse is also true, and these two distinctly different aspects of the site have lived and evolved separately, begrudgingly aware of each others existence, but with both sides only sporadically encountering the border-jumping antics of immigrants looking to defect to the other side. While both sides are certainly guilty for this rift, this article, primarily directed at the review site userbase, has been designed to not simply try and coax you away from the familiarity of such distinct luminaries like SonicthePlumber and the Hemingway-like prose of a reviewer like SkeletorisSatan (last known photo of the two below), but to simply sell you on the idea of the forums.

What do the forums offer for you? Well, essentially the freedom to talk about anything. For example, feeling a little lonely and in need of a little visual stimulation? Then join Respecs in the attractive girls thread. Video games and movies? They got that as well. Sports, Politics? Sorted. For years the review site moderation team has been somewhat strict when it comes to certain non-music discussion, the deletion of certain lists for example. This has happened for one simple reason: the review side of Sputnik was designed to be essentially music-driven, the forums existing as the place for the community to thrive without any particular parameters. We’ve tried integration in the past, with decidedly mixed results, but for this to work we need you guys to want to explore the forums, get to know the layout and become familiar with the regulars over there. So long-standing forum mod Black Ink has decided to create an introductory thread, an “open house” of sorts, for everyone to come together and introduce themselves and get chatting. A few of our review regulars have already headed over there, and while we’re certainly not going to force anyone over there, this is simply the first step at trying to bring together the two very different faces of a site that we’ve all come to know and love over the years. But I’ll let Black Ink tell you about the rest:

Hello all! This is the Sputnik Community Open House thread. This is where new users can come in and introduce themselves and get acquainted with the forums.

Introduce yourselves. Let us know where you’re from, what you do and we’ll all learn a little about each other and get some conversations going.

There’s a table there full of finger foods (food prepped by Fingers Mccoy). Talk all manly things like lumber jacking and guns with RouteOne. Enjoy a pleasant conversation in the French country side with Sweboy. Chat football with 2muchket! or football(U.S) with Ikikdababy.

So welcome and get posting!

The Sputnik Community Open House

Give it a try, have some fun and enjoy!

I'll try and visit more often. I think linking the two sites could potentially revitalize both. Sputnik is huge but homogenous, and mx is small but diverse. Seems perfect to me.

I've always hung out in the poetry section, but the conversation in the rest of the forums tends to move much too fast

I feel that the review city has been overrun with content that belongs on the forums city. Both would benefit greatly from a little discretion and willingness to post in both. I whole-heartedly endorse this post.

I'm not sure whether to take the blue pill or the red pill in this case. The forums don't seem like a rabbit hole I want to venture down, likely because most of my usership here has been spent in the review-matrix.

I used it once to see if anyone was studying music journalism in school, which is something I plan on doing, and people came in and then talked about completely different subjects other than the one I created it for. Haven't really tried it since.

I joined sput when I was 14, six years ago. I reckon theres a lot of young guys floating about, the dumb humour and general assholery makes me want to believe it anyway.
