The last time the site received a major upgrade was in January, when we updated our server architecture. Although there have been a few bumps along the way, overall the change has resulted in increased speed and stability for Sputnikmusic.

This summer, I plan on fixing several persistent bugs and will implement 1-2 ‘major’ changes to the site. I have a provisional list of modifications I’m considering (enhanced genre system, improved news, revised message boards, enhancements to lists, revision of user profiles, design changes), but I wanted to give everyone the chance to provide their feedback on what they think the most valuable addition to the site would be before I start the process. Looking forward to reading your comments below!

yeah an enhanced genre system sounds sick, a lot of reviews still fall under 'other' even though they are vastly different from each other.

possibly a search function to find users, i know as of now to find the ppl i enjoy discussing stuff with and checking out their tastes I have to remember either A) the last thread i spoke to them or B) if they posted on my profile - iunno just hard to find ppl

Definitely revise the genre system/add doom as a genre. Other genres should be added as well, but mostly doom. The "enhanced genre system" in general sounds like a good idea.

Also, I would absolutely love a list system revision, especially in relation to locating lists (e.g. a list search function).

ChuckyTruant

the indie tags need to be refined. there's "alt/indie", "indie pop", and just "indie." plus there's a tag for "alternative rock" which kind of makes the "alt/indie" tag sort of obsolete. there should either just be an "alt/indie" tag, or there should be several more specific tags. but right now it's kind of confusing and it kind of screws up my piechart when the tags are so inconsistent and seemingly randomly applied in some cases.

not a big difference between 1 tenth, but something that is a borderline 3.5 and a 3.9 is a big difference in my ratings.

It would be cool if you could still select the ratings (good, great, excellent) and then modify in between the ranking if desired.

Now if someone puts the name "Sneak Preview" in the site's search engine, the latter redirects to the following url.

Obviously, man. The difference is that reviewer would now be able to know 1) they were troll negged and 2) who they were troll negged by. They could then choose to ignore it as it's simply a troll or if they care, report it. Reported user gets banned.

Just saw that the front page is flooded with reviews for the new Rush album.

A good idea would to put some kind of filter that would inhibit the simultaneous appearance of two (or more) reviews for the same album in the front page, resulting in increased diversity.

The amount of butthurt at knowing who negged you isn't worth thinking about. Granted there are still some mature people on this site, but for the most part it's simply going to be a case of being negged and then deciding to do the same in return. There's a good reason why this function is an anonymous one

Besides, people need to get over being negged. Granted there's a fair amount of troll negging going on, but for the most part this is all pretty obvious and easily remedied. But at the same time you need to be aware that you can't please everyone with your work, and while negging might be an extreme reaction, use it as a way to perhaps better focus your efforts for the next piece

The date of albums issued on the current year, i.e. 2012, should be listed as (month)/(day)/(year).

And btw Ive had similar weird displays like that on my piPhone. Clearing the cache seems to help. Bit bizarre finding album art icons replaced with totally unrelated images from other websites in their place.

"why isn't this effective?"

Because it's remarkably simple circumvent by either changing your IP address, using a different network, proxy connections, or going onto another device with a different IP altogether. And then you have the trolling that happens while these losers are on school machines, where the whole notion of fixed IP goes right out the window.

DarthMann
06.15.12
no banning is to teach someone a lesson, nobody really likes having an alt, even if it is super obvious. darthmann i get what you're saying but i don't understand why mods don't ban alts from users that are supposed to be banned if they know for sure they are the same user. i mean, if i got banned and made an alt called "auber" or "dreamingofaubergine" or something like that, it seems like that account should get banned to, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the banning in the first place, even if there are disadvantages to using an alt. the point is the user that was banned is still causing the same trouble with his alt so nothing has really been remedied with the ban.

06.15.12
Add doom, deathcore, post-metal, and possibly avant-garde. Metal shouldn't have to be the first genre for bands either. Also, the charts should be fixed so the correct number of votes is shown and non-main genres can be accessed. It used to be that genres such as black metal or pregressive could be accessed on the charts by clicking the "charts" tab while on the band page for a band that had that specific genre as their primary genre.

DarthMann
06.15.12
thats the thing, if they do the same shit with their alt they do get banned.
you're allowed to have an alt (i presume) if you stick to the rules and dont do anything against the law, and during that time, you learn that being a cunt all the time is a bad thing (or whatever you got banned for) and you dont do it again.
Thats just my opinion anyway.

I also don't like the whole rating variance thing, it doesn't make sense to me that having the same number of each rating is ideal, doesn't it make sense to have low variance, i.e. most of your ratings float in the 2.5-3.5 range? I know that I bring this up everytime you post something like this, but please either fix or get rid of the site ranking system. For starters, it is kind of broken and updates whenever it wants. More importatnly, however, is that the "pos/neg" does not work how it should. If someone gets "negged" they complain enough to get them wipped by the mods, while most of the time we get "good review pos" by people who probably didn't even read the review. All in all, a review should be judged on merit not a number at the top.

sniper

yeah i could lose the pos/neg system.

and i am personally against adding a bunch more genre tags. a handful would be good, especially more common ones under "other" like ambient, and some electronic ones (dubstep), but at a certain point it becomes ridiculous to insist on the most correct microgenre on a review site. that's what last fm is for.

You should be able to find your album ratings sorted by genre. User search, list search, show jpgs or gifs and not just the link. 10 sliced pie chart, major/general genre tags (like Metal and Punk) should not have to be the first for the band.

I had a funny thought a few months ago: an anti-musical taste chart - a pie chart of things you've rated 2 or lower. Just an idea.

Sometimes ambient music can only involve piano; in fact what I'm listening to right now is compiled only of minimalistic piano and the sound of a storm near where the guy's playing. I don't know if I could call that electronic. There's a huge overlap sure, but it's separate from, say, Garage in that it isn't exclusively electronic.

for searching users: click any username in a thread, then type the user's name you want after the equal sign in the URL. saves time.

this is sort of a project, but I'd like to have a way to view a special average rating for an album including only the ratings of users that are "qualified" in some way. maybe this is a high enough objectivity, or enough ratings, or maybe a favorite users list that you build yourself. just an idea.

maybe instead of getting rid of the pos/neg system, you only have pos's. so like how you can't dislike things on facebook

ambient for genre status

ratings by genre sounds sick

fix charts please

I'd like more specific ratings too but I know that isn't happening

news seems fine as is, not sure what needs fixing there

i'd like to see user's ratings disappear if they've been inactive for a long time, say over two years, as they do on RYM. it's a good way to ensure that the averages reflect the current userbase's opinions on albums.

i dont get this whole ambient vs electronica thing. i thought electronica applied to any music that heavily relied on computerised (ie. electronic) sounds to make their music. it doesn't have any meaning for what type of music is actually being played, just how it was made. if you make ambient music using purely a guitar (lowercase noises, for example), that's guitar-based ambient music, not electronica.

I would suggest that albums revieve genre tags, which are visible on the artists page. Some artists are really diverse and changed their styles multiple times.
Example: Opeth is tagged as Metal, Death Metal, Progressive - but which album contains which style?
The solution would be to tag e.g. Heritage as Progressive, Psychedelic, Deliverance as Death Metal, Progressive, Damnation as Progressive, etc. The artist itself should be able to have more than 3 genre tags anyway.
As for the amount of subgenres etc. that should be added, I have no real idea. Probably some kind of voting process could help.

evilford
06.18.12
first of all, I hope no one really buys into anyones ratings being objective.

secondly, even if we did buy into that, what if people only rated albums that they like above average? what if you're good at picking albums you're going to listen to next and they are all above 3.5/4 and you mostly only rate stuff you enjoy? that shouldn't indicate low objectivity. someone could randomly rate 20 albums each for rating 1.0 to 5.0 and their objectivity would be 100% or something. it's existence defeats it's purpose. but as it is, it's not really hurting anything so if it's not done away with it's not an issue really.

06.18.12
Yeah the objectivity part is impossible to ignore. You are far more likely to go towards the extremes when rating. I don't know what the average rating of all the albums combined is, but I'd guess it is higher than a 3. I know it would never happen but it would be cool to rank and rate within genres.

Voivod
06.19.12
With reference to the site's objectivity index, I think it would be better if every user rating was divided with the rating average of each record and then multiplied with 100.

In the case where a user's rating for a record is the first one, then the default normalized value will be equal to 100.

The average of all normalized user ratings would yield a much more objective (sic) objectivity index.

ChuckyTruant
06.19.12
Gah im so bad at math

Voivod
06.19.12
In the case where a user's rating for a record is the first one, then the default normalized value will be equal to 100.

For the sake of completion, if there are more ratings in the future, the value of the normalized user rating will be continuously adjusted according to the record's rating average.

ChuckyTruant
06.19.12
Hmm.

Voivod
06.19.12
As a conclusion, a user with an objectivity index close or equal to 100 with be aptly objective, whereas users with an index significantly lower or significantly higher than 100 will be subjective in their ratings.

SaneTBP
06.19.12
That wouldn't work, because the one with most sputnik like tastes would have the highest objectivity scores. That wouldn't help at all, since when you'd look at their ratings, you'd see most likely the average scores.

And sputnik averages are not "objective" at all, well there isn't an objective score for an album.

Voivod
06.19.12
"because the one with most sputnik like tastes would have the highest objectivity scores"

I don't think there is such thing as "sputnik like tastes".

And in the majority of rating averages on which I can have a solid say whether they are objective or not, they are indeed.

For example, I have a 63% objectivity score , because in general I tend to care about records that I will most probably like, giving ratings that lie between 3 and 5.

If my ratings were processed by the aforementioned scheme, the objectivity index would rise up, because, in most record cases, the rating average of the albums I rated would be close to my ratings.

In general, I admit that no system is perfect, though.

SaneTBP
06.19.12
"And in the majority of rating averages on which I can have a solid say whether they are objective or not, they are indeed."

Eh, and how can you say what's an objective rating?

I'm not saying that your idea is bad, it's just flawed. As is almost any other choice in the other hand. I just don't think that it'd be helpful at all, it just would make the average scores more generic since some people would start to rate stuff close to the average rather than rating based on their own opinion.

Voivod
06.19.12
"Eh, and how can you say what's an objective rating?"

Putting it this way, I will admit I can't really say for sure, but when I like an album and see that another N (where N=200 or N=30, for example) people like it as well, then I can assume with good certainty that the album is indeed good.

That's my sole indication and in general (not in all cases though), album rating averages in Sputnik tend to speak the truth about an album

Lots of people agreeing with an opinion=opinion being objective
After all there isn't such a thing as "objective" rating, so that still could be the closest one.

That objectivity method would suck for the guys with unusual tastes though, since their scores would be different. That wouldn't mean that the ones with unsual taste would be less objective, they are just looking for different things in music or give higher regard to other things in music than majority of people in sputnik. They can still rate their stuff objectively, by their standards. There isn't things that make albums better than other, only opinions. That's the beauty of music and the reason why "objective ratings" in music all always, well, subjective.

I was wrong earlier about using the word "certainty", what I really meant to say is that when a lot of people agree about the good or bad merit of one album, then there's a high chance (and absolute certainty) that this album is correspondingly bad or good.

I think it's goofy for anyone, including sputnik, to make any kind of assumption that taste in music has anything to do with objectivity. "musical taste" and "objectivity" are mutually exclusive on a fundamental level. that's why I think if there are any changes at all, just remove all instances of the word objective or objectivity from the site.
