"Had Dzagoev in my fantasy football team.. before i replaced him with affelay. Im such a fucking retard"
I feel for ya
I considered Dzagoev before the tournament, went with Shirokov instead, who did get a goal against the Czechs.
"I think Poland should put in Nergal for its headers.
But, yeah, very enjoyable match thus far."
Nergal shredding for the goal and there goes the riff.. and.. BAM.. nailed that solo! or something like that.
"Has Malafeev always been Russia's No.1? I sort of thought Akinfeev was, and so I went with him for the first round.."
Akinfeev is their #1 but he was injured most of the last season so they're going steady with him. I picked him in the first round, but by the time it came to transferring his price had gone down and Malafeev's had increased (whoever introduced that system should be shot), so it kinda messed up the budgets.
Yay, Poland scored. Once again don't get a clean sheet. Should've gone with Dzagoev instead. Fuck my dream team has been so unlucky.
"This game isn't particularly amazing but most of the games so far have been boring"
Sure, but which game has been 'amazing' yet? It just seems like there's actually some 'spirit' and something 'happening'. Most games so far almost seemed a bit 'lethargic'.
Well, it does seem like neither team is entirely complacent with the draw here. It's good to see both sides with some fire in their bellies, still creating some good opportunities.
"Sure, but which game has been 'amazing' yet?"
Poland v Greece was brilliant to watch
"It just seems like there's actually some 'spirit' and something 'happening'. Most games so far almost seemed a bit 'lethargic'. "
Yeah well that's cos of the history behind the two countries, and that one is a host.
Eh, Poland vs. Greece was the only one I actually didn't see I believe.
Well, I don't think it's just history. The German team for example always seems a bit 'lazy' in the beginning, sometimes even to the point of almost seeming 'sloppy'. (which it actually looked like for Ireland)
I bet there are some German and Dutch hooligans that think of WW2 when these two nations play against each other. Or maybe Germans are just mad Rijkaard spit on Völler back in the day ^^
We really would like to win tonight, but it's still a fantastic result for Poland. And very meaningful, 'cause Russians were completely sure they win. We just need to beat Czechs now.
There's actually not that much bad blood between the Netherlands and Germany in general from what I know. No idea if the history between the football teams gos further back though, might be - might not, depends on the players I guess. Last player really going to town I remember was Zidane and that was quite a while back.
"By the way is the Germany-Netherlands feud just to do with football or does it go outside of that like England-Argentina?"
Relations between the countries reached a low point between 1941 and 1945. Generations of subsequent footballers would have had personal experiences of the occupation and murdered family members, so there is a very good reason for the rivalry, although obviously it's cooled a bit. Germany and the Netherlands were also the best teams in the world during the 70s, so it was all quite spicy back then.
"Relations between the countries reached a low point between 1941 and 1945."
That's a pretty obvious one, though and there was not really anything I can remember in recent history that goes deeper than soccer.
Then again, I'm not talking about political relations. Solely what certain groups of people think.
"I'm hoping Germany vs. Holland tomorrow tops it though."
[geography-nazi] It's still the Netherlands, Holland is just a region in the Netherlands.[/geography nazi]
"That's a pretty obvious one, though and there was not really anything I can remember in recent history that goes deeper than soccer."
Read an English tabloid when they draw Germany. Old wounds don't heal overnight, and in a lot of cases they morph into a much healthier rivalry, like the German-Dutch one.
By the way is the Germany-Netherlands feud just to do with football or does it go outside of that like England-Argentina?
Yes it is the war.
In Football Against the Enemy Simon Kuper writes that when Holland bt Germany in the 1988 Euro semi-final (I am doing this from memory so it may not have been that match) the Dutch said this was getting their bicycles back - a reference to the Germans banning bicyles when they occupied Holland during the war.

Well, tabloids are also hyperbole multiplied with infinity and no standards. Ofc they don't but I doubt the relationship between the Dutch and the Germans is for example similar to the one between the French and the Germans. Also, in the whole of our history there weren't as much problematic relationships with the Netherlands as there were with the French and the UK.
Yes, but we are talking about Holland and germany and I put forward a reason for the banbd blood between them. That lots of nations etc etc does not invalidate what I wrote.

Malafeev is my captain so I hope he can keep this clean sheet. Ironically Polanski almost scored against him and he's in my team too.
