Major/Minor is Beggars with a purpose, and that purpose is to kick ass. “Anthology” hits harder than any Thrice song in the last five years. I’m continually impressed with Dustin’s vocal performance, not just in this song but the album as a whole. He’s never exactly sounded bored on past albums, but the lack of harsh vocals has definitely given that impression at times. But he’s so impassioned on Major/Minor that it’s almost unbelievable, and this song is the best example of that. Plus the riffs are amazing.

This is so terrible. I don't understand how this is the same band the did Vheissu and the Indexes. No, it's not the change in sound that bugs me. It's the lack of innovation. And I dont' hear this "passion" in Dustin's voice. Just cold, dreary ambivalence. Ugh. I feel so disgusted right now with this band.

NOTINTHEFACE
09.03.11
you're.

I don't understand how two chords qualifies me as crazy. Because that's essentially all this is. There's absolutely nothing to this. It's the musical equivalent of cardboard with garlic sprinkled on it.

Aids
09.03.11
two chords? listen again dude this aint The Ramones. The song has a pretty average level of complexity compared to the rest of their stuff.

paxman
09.03.11
Wow, notintheface is an idiot.

Rev
09.03.11
are you listening to the same song?

NOTINTHEFACE
09.03.11
Yes. And that song is boring. I've never had a band I love make a song that actually made me mad before but there's a first time for everything I guess. The verses are dull, (literally two chords going back and forth with some ornaments thrown in) the chorus is basically an extension of the verses (one extra chord!!!) and the bridge is kind of interesting but so are the bridges to most pop songs. I hated beggars for the same reasons. And my hopes for this album are essentially nil at this point.

paxman
09.03.11
This song is so great, but it's remarkably my least favorite on the album. Every single track is so goddamned good.

someguest
09.03.11
It's funny you complain how this doesn't have the power of Vheissu when it's the closest the band has been to that sound since they released that album. The innovation is here. It's the band - and especially Dustin - maturing. And that's much more important than fifty different riffs per song.

Rev
09.03.11
I'm a music theory major and the number of chords in this song is enough to satisfy me

paxman
09.03.11
Rev knows what he's talking about.

anytime someone says "not enough chords" you know they are a giant twat irl

NOTINTHEFACE
09.03.11
Anytime someone uses sweeping generalizations to describe someone on the internet you know they are an insecure person who needs to affirm their superiority through pointless arguments online.

Simply constructed songs can be amazing when executed right (see A Determinism of Morality by Rosetta. The whole 10 minutes is essentially one chord progression repeated over and over but it rules) but Thrice basically boil everything down to a formula so basic they are just another rock band at this point. Compare this with anything on Vheissu aside from Image of the Invisible and the differences are stark. This just doesn't have any energy or emotion put into it, and neither did 90% of Beggars. My opinion is absolute. My word is law.

The middle section of Beggars is the best songwriting Thrice has done since The Artist In The Ambulance.

Rev
09.03.11
^ i thought the title track was the best off of that

"This just doesn't have any energy or emotion put into it"

I strongly disagree. Watch the acoustic version, Dustin looks as if he's about to cry

NOTINTHEFACE

The title track is my least favorite Thrice song lol. Go figure. I'll check it out because I genuinely want to like this album.

someguest
09.03.11
When he does the final "We are beggars all" - and then the song just falls downward It's a cool moment.

paxman
09.03.11
I don't see how Beggars could be anyone's least favorite Thrice song; Beggars is a masterpiece. Check out the acoustic video on Youtube where Dustin plays it in the bathroom. And if you think Vheissu is the most powerful or passionate Thrice album, you are wrong--it's more like the least. This album right here is the most passionate thing they've ever written. If you want more Vheissu, go put the damn album on repeat.

Rev
09.03.11

"Like, there's so many worse songs on Beggars."

Agreed. But even the Radiohead clone "Circles" is pretty good.

NOTINTHEFACE
09.03.11
I love Circles. That and Wood and Wire really saved the album for me. I also though Talking Through Glass and In Exile were pretty good. Other than that.... eh.

paxman
09.03.11
Radiohead clone? You sure about that?

Oh, and those "ornaments" in the verses on this track, notintheface...no, that is an awesome guitar riff. Are your speakers working correctly?

words in the water seems like a water-disc song written in a rock style, it's so fucking good, i haven't heard that much emotion in a thrice song in forever

BrahTheSunGod
09.05.11
Words in the Water is amazing, but the passion (and meaning) behind this song puts it at the top of the list for me. Anyone know the full story behind this? A lot of the lines are key lines from past thrice songs:

"tin cans and string" - Atlantic ~ Vheissu
"cornerstone" - Phoenix Ignition ~ Identity Crisis (this one i'm not sure of)
"north wind ... anchor my soul" - The Whaler" Water ~ Alchemy Index
"don't you know me" - Like Moths to Flame ~ Vheissu
"see this through... snap my neck... save my life" - Trust ~ Illusion of Safety
"meet it halfway" - In Years to Come ~ Illusion of Safety
"sifting my soul" - Silhouette ~ Artist in the Ambulance
"loyalty sworn...come what may..." - The Weight ~ Beggars

Yeah. I have so much fun listening to one of my favorite bands suck. Bashing ftw.

Also I've listened to this several more times and it's still one of the most disappointing things I've ever heard. I really don't understand what everyone hears in this because there's absolutely nothing to hear.
