Apropos of yesterday’s finger-wagging blog, I should point it’s almost two years to the day since Thrice’s last album Beggars leaked almost three months before its scheduled release. Follow-up Major/Minor is penciled in for a September 20 release and has yet to leak – it’s almost as if leaks are bad for business!!

But no sooner have I opened that can of worms than I will slam it firmly shut.

For today saw the premiere of the delightfully-titled ‘Yellow Belly,’ the first single from Major/Minor. ‘Yellow Belly’ continues the group’s slide towards mainstream rock as featured on Beggars with more melody and lush layers, and less dissonance and abrasion.

As a lead single, it lacks the immediacy and distinctiveness of ‘All the World is Mad,’ opting instead for a Tom Morello-style stripped-down heavy metal riff. As the handy little Soundcloud visual demonstrates, it’s not a particular dynamic track, though the morose middle eight beginning around the 1:36 mark offers some degree of variety.

People like me will be hoping this is just fluff, and that the album proper veers more towards the Radiohead-inspired electronic tinkering of ‘Circles’ and ‘Doublespeak.’

Love the song. And I presume this blog post will serve as a replacement for the plethora of new items about this that I can only imagine were submitted (Including my own).

I'm not seeing the mainstream rock that you're talking about. Sounds heavier than anything off of Beggars. I'm with redsky. Songs is awesome. Love it.

really don't like this, but then my favourite thrice songs are the non-punk ones.

eternium

I can definitely hear the Pelican in it the same way The Earth Will Shake (my favorite Thrice song) is structured like Isis but with verse/chorus.

Looks like another great album by Thrice

I can't hear this song atm - and don't want to change the subject slightly - but I always thought 'Image of the Invisible' was the perfect type of lead single for Thrice... Even if you could easily make the argument that it didn't entirely fit in with the rest of 'Vheissu'.

Two years and I still can't find a leak without those annoying promo voices, damn it.
Song's not bad 3.5/5 on first listen

I really hope they do not take the direction of Circles and Doublespeak, two of the worst songs on Beggars honestly. With that said, this is pretty disappointing initially, hopefully it will grow on me.

Davey, that's exactly what this song made me think. I think this will be the base product on which they expand on for the album.

At first I was really surprised at these negative comments, but the more I think about it, I should have seen it coming. Thrice is suffering from BTBAM-syndrome.

"I delete every comment with that [2] thing in it to save you the embarrassment of being one of the people who does that"

Fair enough, I'll put it in my own words then. I feel that claiming that Thrice are sliding into "mainstream rock" is a bit of a stretch. If anything, this is more raw than Beggars.

It has a nice vibe.
Never been a massive Thrice fan, though. So, I won't be let down either way.
I prefer this stuff over their early releases, though. I wasn't a fan of All the World is Mad at all. I haven't listened to the rest of Beggars, though.

Aids
07.20.11
Pretty ok song. I'm with you Dave, I hope this is fluff. I will eventually purchase the album I'm sure but, sorry to say it, I neeeeeeed this to leak before I fuck off to Africa for a year (Sept. 5)

I'm just going to point out that Image of the Invisible was the first Vheissu song to be released. They're probably showing off the most 'normal' song first for a reason.

If I ever have a band, I'm going to release the strangest, most indigestible, song first.

That is encouraging information, eternium. I would absolutely love it if this were the most mainstream song on the album.

Vesuvion

This production is top notch. Which is a welcome change to the awkward production on The Alchemy Indexes, and the underwhelming Beggars. Teppei must be so relieved to not be behind the knobs this time. Song has a pretty average first impression.

DaveyBoy

Had a listen. Sounds solid, without being sensational a'la 'Beggars'. Mr 3.5 give it a 3.5.

DaveyBoy
07.20.11
Clarification as that comment reads ambiguously. I thought 'Beggars' was also solid, but not sensational.

pneumoniahawk93
07.20.11
I like it a lot. It has a 90's vibe, which is pretty cool. I don't think that this will be what the album is like; with Thrice albums, it never usually is, but it doesn't make me any less excited by the release.

Fieryfenderz
07.20.11
Hoping this sounds NOTHING like Radiohead. What the fuck are you talking about?

SpoonerMcgee
07.20.11
Completely confused by the comments made on this song. This song is a step up in heaviness/aggression from just about everything on Beggars. This song is pretty good, but sadly the worst riff/part is the MAIN riff, which sounds too sludgey almost like a forgettable nu-metal riff. After the first verse, it really picks up and shows potential for the new album.

Knott-
07.20.11

The song wasn't bad. BUT, it has nothing on The Earth Will Shake.

botb
07.20.11
really isnt mainstream rocky at all tbh

Deathcar
07.20.11
It's good, not great. I mean, Dustin's voice is as awesome as ever, and the production is class but it is a bit all one level - it sounds very similar to the new Balance and Composure record in places and that was a massive grower, so we'll see.

As others have said, their first singles aren't always the best indicator of the rest of the album. 3.5/5 for now.

paxman
07.20.11
Slide toward mainstream rock? Don't know your definition of mainstream but this is decidedly LESS mainstream than anything on Beggars. Also don't know what you're talking regarding 'electronics' in Circles and Doublespeak. Beggars was a very stripped-down album. See Water for electronics. Or maybe you have a different definition for that word as well.

Song itself is good, not great, but Thrice certainly have a reputation of not putting out the best song as a single
