Ash Wednesday, like Christmas, Easter, and Lent is a pagan holiday adopted by the Catholic church some time during/after the reign of Constantine. In order to woo some of the local pagans, the church would adopt certain practices as their own while threatening the heathens with fire and brimstone. In reality, the church needed more members for fatter Sunday donations. Fin.

Actually, while most Satanists and such have adopted the upside down cross, the pope actually has it on his throne. Why? Because it is a symbol of how the first pope was crucified upside down because he didn't think he was good enough to die how Jesus died. Fun fact.
