Those of you in the Sarnia-Windsor-Detroit area are familiar with 88.7FM/CIMX, the so-called “new-rock alternative” for the region. If not, you’re free to stream them live anywhere in the world [[from their official site]].

While their 5:00PM all-request hour seems to be the same people calling in (just once I would love to drive home from work and NOT hear “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails at the same fucking time every day), the station does have its perks on days I forget my iPod: The Top 9 @ 9 (which is exactly what you’d expect it to be), the People’s Choice (two songs ’square off’ with the winning song advancing to the next day to take on a new challenger), the “Catch of the Day” (at 4:30PM, prior to the aforementioned Request Hour, a non-single or forthcoming single is aired) are 89X mainstays.

Also, Dave and Chuck The Freak’s morning show (which rivals Grand Rapids’ “Free Beer and Hot Wings Morning Show” as the funniest morning show from my former home state) can be so hysterical that I’ve thought I pulled a rib or two, and all of 89X’s DJs remain attuned to their listeners and go out of their way to give back to the community.

For example, each of the 89X radio personalities served as guest baristas at Caribou Coffee locations throughout Metro Detroit, as part of the station’s “12 Days of Christmas” celebration. Proceeds from this event were donated to charity:

Believe me, I know what you’re thinking: “Whatever, yeah, it’s for charity, but they’re just going to stand there and look handsome/pretty and let the actual minimum wagers do all the work.”

Actually, that wasn’t the case at all. Not only did the DJs engage with customers, but they had an absolute blast, even when they were scolded for botching a drink or two (or twelve).

In my brief, extremely informal interviews with the 89X DJs (each DJ was stationed at a different Caribou location each day, so while this involved a lot of driving, it was still for a fun cause), the recurring, underlying theme was one of good cheer.

Typically, with all the commercialism that’s associated with the Christmas holiday (sidenote – Hey, Meijer, please stop putting up Christmas decorations in the store before we even hit Halloween), it’s awesome to know that people behind the giant mic, whose job is to not only hit a bunch of buttons in a small space, but accompany you on the way to/from work and/or get you through your workday, aren’t just there to do that job and just leave until they have to do it all over again the next day.

By interacting with the people they “work” for in the community on a face-to-face level – as opposed to the e-mail/Twitter/Facebook/phone conversations they are accustomed to when taking requests – each DJ was willing and able to affix a huge smile on everyone’s face for each of those twelve days.

That’s certainly a major part of not just during the holiday season, but something that should remain constant throughout the year: be the best person you can be to inspire someone else to be just as badass as you (or at least come close, if you have to be #1 on your List of Badasses).

At any rate, on behalf of Dave, Trey, Moz, and Jens (we all don’t know where Zebra is, exactly, but we’re sure he’s doing fine), I’d like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and good luck and good health to you in 2011.

On behalf the Sputnikmusic Meds,

Jom

PS: Okay, seriously, what good is a Christmas post without harking back to 2007’s epic “DOWN WITH THE CHRISTMAS” jingle? Written by The Paybacks, who have made “Down with the Sickness” all the more tolerable by including sleigh bells and gift-giving lyrics, please stream the track below:

Lyrics:

Can you hear that?
The sleigh bells…

Buh-rup-rup-rup-rup!
Ho, ho! Ho, ho! Ho, ho!
Buh-rup-rup-rup-rup!
Ho, ho! Ho, ho! Ho, ho!

I can’t sleep when I think of presents
Waiting for me under the tree
(Will you give them to me?)
It’s probably the only time I’m up before 6:30 waiting
(Will you give them to me?)

Presents and lights in all directions
And candy canes and paper
I’ll have to clean up later
YEEOW!
But I don’t mind because it’s Christmas time
And I’ve got the spirit in me!

Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Open up your gift and then you give one to me!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
You open it up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
It’s time to get up and go get down with the Christmas!
Open up your gift and then you give one to me!

I can see you’re trying to sleep while he’s flying
Over your house on his sleigh
(He’s gonna give it to me)
You’re on his nice list, so you’ll get some nice gifts on Christmas Day
(He’s gonna give it to me)
It seems he’s having some trouble in squeezing down your chimney
Trying to get the cookies
YEEOW!
Now there is no turning back now, ’cause it’s the Christmas season
Give me!

Under my tree
Under my tree
UNDER MY TREE!

Buh-rup-rup-rup-rup!

Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
Open up your gift and then you give one to me!
Get up, come on, get down with the Christmas!
It’s time to get up and go get down with the Christmas!
You gotta get up and go get down with the Christmas!
Grab a gift and give one to me!
