Dimmu Borgir released “Gateways (Edit)” from their upcoming album, Abrahadabra, last Tuesday through iTunes (and probably other digital retailers). On a whim, I decided to buy the track to see if I should be looking forward to the whole CD or not – it didn’t really help. It doesn’t help because “Gateways” is different enough from their previous releases that it’s hard to tell if it is a one-off or if it is representative of the whole album.

For one, there are two different sections that contain female vocals and neither of them turns out to be cheesy.  The first section with female vocals is shouted in an almost punk-like manner, and the second section is more of a choir effect (think Therion not Cradle of Filth). Both sections were surprising because it’s a new direction for the band, and also because it actually worked. Another thing about the song is that it is much slower and more melodic than what is typical of a Dimmu Borgir track. I’m not trying to say that it’s pop or anything, but it’s definitely much more accessible. Those that actually care about the band have probably read that the album features another full orchestra, but unlike Death Cult Armageddon, “Gateways” isn’t overpowered by it. The song is more of an equal partnership between the riffs and the orchestral parts.

So, this song didn’t really help at all. If the whole album pushes the band’s sound like this song did then things might be looking up. If this song is unique and the rest of the album reverts to the band’s regular sound then it will probably be pretty underwhelming.

Just a quick write-up. Their image might be terrible, but most of their music is decent.

You just got me excited for the album, even though that wasn't your intention.

Willie

Well, if the album is diverse like this song then things might be good. I like these guys, but they haven't really done anything exciting in awhile.

Basically my thoughts, plus the image really does turn me off since it pervades a lot of what they do.

It's the difference between these guys and Cradle of Filth. CoF has the stupid image but you can tell through interviews and song lyrics that it's all fun. These guys seem to take themselves a little too seriously which makes it harder to stomach the cheesier parts.

Pretty much, like in the liner notes of In Sorte Diablo the text is written upside and backwards (so you need a mirror to read it, OMG so creepy!) and it's literally 3 pages on how the Christian faith is a lie. It doesn't come across as "just a bit of fun", these guys were totally serious about that.

they are not trve satanic krieg tho

i mght give this song a listen if its on youtube, dunno if ill like it

I'm not against a band being serious about the anti-christian thing, but they're terrible representatives for the agenda they're pushing just because of their image. It's like when you watch a UFO documentary and the only people that are arguing for their existence are a bunch of rednecks and scientists that look like they're crazy (and never bathe).

Wasn't really expecting much from Dimmu Borgir anyway. Nice write-up Trey.

I didn't go into it expecting a lot either, but it was only 99 cents. It turned out to not be anything like what I expected. Good song, but it doesn't make me any more excited for the album because I have a feeling that this song doesn't represent the album.

Yeah, not too bad. This band still gets way too much shit. I mean, I would rather listen to new Dimmu than new Cradle of Filth or Children of Bodom any day.

Wonder whose new album will be better, Cradle or Dimmu. While most ppl on the site will hurl will the albums come out, it'll make 2010 explode for mainstream black metal.

**when the albums come out

I'm going to review the new Dimmu when it is released, but I think I'll leave CoF for someone else. They haven't really interested me since Midian. Also, I think Dimmu's albums have always been better (doing a direct comparison to the other's album released around the same time).

TheSpirit

Well i tend to agree with the fact that later Dimmu albums have slain later Cradle albums, but Godspeed was decent, and from the song I heard from the new album it sounded pretty good. However I have yet to listen to this new Dimmu song so i can't make a fair call. When it comes to the earlier material of both bands however i prefer Cradle.

Really? I'd put the original Stormblast among the best black metal albums of all time.

TheSpirit
08.31.10
Both Cradle's and Dimmu's sophomore albums were two of their best but when it comes down to it, I would rather listen to Dusk and Her Embrace then Stormblast.

TheSpirit

Song was okay. What's always kind of bothered me about Dimmu is that they sometimes they start off a melody excellently but never know how to follow through and making a satisfying ending to it.

Willie

I agree that they haven't progressed as songwriters in a long ass time. They supplement it by trying to get random people in the band that can write (or they gloss over it with big orchestra sections). If they had tried to push their songwriting further after Enthrone Darkness they could be awesome right now.

Awful song.

I hated everything Dimmu did after Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, not because they "sold out", but because the music was genuinely boring as hell. However, i heard this the other day, and it really wasn't all that awful, i'll even go as far as to say it was better than the Cradle single that was released (the female section in that song was horrid).

I haven't even bothered with the CoF single. I don't think I will. I'll wait for reviews and maybe check the full album out after.

I listened to like 2 CoF songs and i was done

A lot of CoF's new stuff sucks. It's their older albums that are worth a damn.

Didn't like the female vocals. They sound like a piss poor imitation of Julie Christmas

Hawks

I think this song really sucked to be honest. Seems like they're experimenting on this song, but it doesn't come out anywhere near as good as some of their other "experimental" tracks such as Puritania.

TheSpirit
09.01.10
The new Cradle of Filth song was actually much better then this. Not saying it was great, but better then this.

Hyperion1001

Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Volcano are probably two of the worst "black metal" affiliated records i have ever heard. I hated Puritanical so much i gave the CD away to some random scene kid at my high school.

Hawks
09.01.10
Yeah the new Cradle was way better than this. Puritanical is an awesome album and Volcano is really good too. A lot better than Rebel Extravaganza.

TheSpirit
09.01.10
Yeah I like Purtianical a lot as well. I've never heard Vulcano or even Rebel Extravaganza

Hyperion1001
09.01.10
I couldn't stand it, every song was just obnoxious and made me want to listen to something else.

Volcano wasn't as awful as i made it out to be, but after releasing The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina, listening to that just made me angry. It was almost a 180 degree shift in both writing style and strength.

Hyperion1001
09.01.10
Now, Diabolical is the worst thing they have released by far though.

XulOnerom
09.01.10
I didn't think it was innovative, really. Aside from the female vocals, it's the same orchestra-tremolo riff-breakdown combination they have been doing for their last 3 records.

Btw, I can't stand "Puritania". Worst Dimmu song ever

Hawks
09.01.10
No man Rebel Extravaganza is complete garbage. The Shaowthrone and Nemesis Divina are definitely way better than Volcano, but that's expected.

Hyperion1001
09.01.10
To be quite honest, i never really listened to Rebel Extravaganza (the title makes me want to never ever hear it) so i'll take your word for it.

Nemesis Divina rules so much though it's unreal. At least they released that :-)

I don't think it's innovative either. I just think it's a different appraoch for this particular band. Also, it might be the same orchestral sound, but it didn't dominate the song like it has done in the past. Also, it was a little more melodic.
