Color me confuzzled. Someone, apparently a Milwaukee group named Photon Wave Orchestra took Justin Bieber’s “U Smile” pumped up the reverb and slowed the song down 800%. The result is probably the best ambient track you’re going to hear all year, although the slowed down drums can get kind of annoying after a few minutes. Joke or not, what the track proves is, at its finest, ambient music takes all of the simplicity that makes pop music so accessible and lays it bare before us. It’s what Hammock does, it’s what Sigur Ros does, and apparently, in the second level of Christopher Nolan’s dreamworld, it’s what Justin Bieber does as well.

Gyromania

sweeping generalizations jesus

Gyromania
08.18.10
ambient music was started by Erik Satie, he wasnt accessible at all.

Enotron
08.18.10
"takes the simplicity that makes pop so accessible" he was saying it took the simplicity, not the accessibility

Gyromania
08.18.10
if you want to infer that most ambient around today is generic and therefore "pop" then that's a different argument

Enotron
08.18.10
but he wasn't saying that about ambient music

Enotron
08.18.10
also accessibility doesn't necessarily mean it's generic.

Gyromania
08.18.10
it was a sweeping generalization

Enotron
08.18.10
it wasn't a generalization, you guys just disagree on how one could define ambient music. he was saying that it is relatable to pop in terms of it's minimalism/simplicity but presents it in a completely different context

Gyromania
08.18.10
"Joke or not, what the track proves is, at its finest, ambient music takes all of the simplicity that makes pop music so accessible and lays it bare before us" that is definitely a generalization

Enotron
08.18.10
perhaps, but any statement addressing ambient music as a genre can be construed as generalized. so perhaps it's a generalization, but I agree with the basic premise.

Deviant.
08.18.10
Way too much flip flopping in this thread

robertsona
08.18.10
"ambient music was started by Erik Satie, he wasnt accessible at all."

um what, i mean whether or not "ambient music" was actually started by satie is not very stable at all, but even if he did, gymnopedies (the ones that are usually credited with this "ambient" thing) are very accessible

Lucid
08.18.10
Sigur Bieber. This rules so much.

robertsona
08.18.10
id say brian eno is the creator of ambient music; stuff like it sort of existed before and gymnopedies etc contained strokes of ambient but to call pieces like that "ambient" is a stretch; i think stuff like ambient 1 music for airports is the first thing that can comfortably be called "ambient" not like "ambient-esque classical" or whatever but maybe thats just me anyway WHAT

Enotron
08.18.10
hehe...furniture music

Enotron
08.18.10
robertsona: i'd disagree. usually the innovators of a genre don't have any intention or even relate their music to the genre. sort of like how rites of spring or embrace had this anti-emo state of mind to the label and how they were associated with it, but they did start the basic sound to what's associated with the genre. perhaps the same could be said for erik satie. though eno did contribute a lot more.

Skimaskcheck
08.18.10
i wonder if Beiber knows about this

i hope he doesn't

Enotron
08.18.10
i can imagine him twitter: lol i heard the u smile remix it was weird lol only listened to like one minute

robertsona
08.18.10
mine isnt even about "intention" as much as it is that i dont really consider satie "ambient". it has strokes of ambient and certainly foreshadowed it, but i dont think it was "ambient". whereas i consider eno's "ambient" stuff to be ambient no doubt

i love how at points the vocals get sort of muddled and then the wash (i.e. the drums, i believe) comes in and clears it all away

it's like watching a sea tide come in over and over again, and that sea tide is somehow bringing in angelic voices or something

yeah

LeRequiem

4 minutes x 8 = 32 minutes.
8 = 8.00 = 800%
U Smile x 800% = ambient.
4 minutes x 87.5% = 3,5 minutes.
amidoinitrite?

robertsona
08.19.10
"I can't believe this "800% slower" thing has gone unchallenged. It's 87.5% slower. "800%" slower would be the original speed x7 and played backwards."

It's 1/8th of the original speed.

1/8th = 12.5%

So this is 12.5% of the original speed, or 87.5% slower than the original. Dave is correct.

It is 1/8th the speed, but I'm having a really hard time deciding if you can even call something "some percentage slower".

This can only mean one thing.

If you speed up Sigur Ros 800% it sounds like Justin Bieber.

lancebramsay
08.19.10
Setting aside the mathematical errors, this song is quite excellent. Definitely reminds me of Sigur Ros along the lines of high reverb and high pitched singing.

lobby
08.19.10
on the other hand, we should speed this up heaps, create heaps of distortion and see what Jbieb sounds like when he give the noise genre a go...
