Anacrusis were a technical thrash band that started in the late eighties, but they only made it to the mid-ninties before breaking up. There are many reasons for their eventual demise – fans would say that they were too ahead of their time, but the band would tell you that there was much more to it than that (read their bio). Anyway, it seems to be the trend for old bands to get back together and Anacrusis have gone that route. In late 2009 they announced that their original line-up at reformed and that they were re-recording their first two albums. Listed below are four tracks – the first is the original and the second is the re-recording. The album is set to be released some time in April… until then, enjoy.

While listening feel free to download all four of their original albums for free (I suggest starting with Manic Impressions and/or Screams & Whispers):

My opinion, I think the 1988 release "Suffering Hour" needed the re-recording, but I'm still on the fence about the 1990 album, "Reason". I liked the sound of the original. Anyway, despite how you feel about these four songs, if you like technical thrash you should download their last two albums - "Manic Impressions" and "Screams & Whispers" (link above).

Haven't you been reccing Anacruisis for aaaages? Anyway I like Screams and Whispers, Suffering Hour not so much. Anyway I like the re-recording of Present Tense a lot more than the original.

Yeah. I mean, they're one of my favorite bands and they're giving away all four of their old albums for free so it seems like one of the easier bands to try to get people to listen to.

I'm not a huge fan of the original Suffering Hour either, but the re-recording might fix some issues. It's the "Reason" re-recording that I'm still not sure about. I liked the fat, muddy sound (especially after I read that it was inspired by The Cure).

I haven't got Reason so I wouldn't know, although a Cure influence sounds awesome to me so I might have to go get it now.

Nice, I'll have to check this out.

@mutatedfreak: yeah, check out the 1990 version of "Stop Me" on this page to hear what I'm talking about. It's definitely moody and it's got that thick bass guitar-heavy sound.

@Enrico: Start with Screams & Whispers or Manic Impressions.

great to know, Screams and Whispers is one of my favorite thrash albums ever.

That one record was great. They should have, in my opinion put out a new album instead of remastering their earlier output.

I'm hoping that this is just testing the waters to see if there's still a fan interest, and to see if they can still work together after so many years apart. Edit: Oh, and they didn't just remaster it, they completely re-recorded it.

Screw the originals, the re-recordings are awesome. I've always had a problem with old metal records whether they be Metallica all the way to Death; I loved the songs but the literal sound of them always turned me off a bit.

Band is really good.

Bloc, I think part of my issue is that I've been listening to (and enjoying) the "Reason" album for years and I'm being resistant to change ;) I need to get over it before I review the full album.

I forgot that you liked these guys, Crysis.

Yeah dude Manic Impressions slays for days.

that Present Tense re-recording is really cool, but I like the original Stop Me better. It has got that cool late 80's zazz. This made me want to listen to Screams And Whispers again!

Willie

Yeah, metalstyles, I'm leaning the same way. I think I'm going to have to split my review into two parts (one review, but two parts) because I don't know if I can let go of "Reason's" original sound.

Looking forward to that review Trey. Sadly I need to go atm (again), but I am prolly gonna spin Screams And Whispers in the gym tomorrow morning.

I'm studying (kinda) at the moment so I have trip hop, mellow rock, and new age selected on my iTunes on shuffle - but I'm going to listen to Screams later tonight too. I'm in that kind of mood.

I'm gonna listen to Screams tomorrow anyway, but looking back at my previous statement, I'm not too sure I'm actually gonna spin it at the gym. In there I'll prolly put on some semi-heavy metal with chunky riffs and groovy, rhythmic patterns (prolly some Nonpoint, Sevendust, Scum Of The Earth, Profane Omen, Pantera)

Awesome, awesome, awesome Willie. Glad they cleaned it up with the re-recording, sounds much better. Guyz, check out everything by these guys.

The cleaned up recording of the debut sounds better for sure. I'll reserve judgement on the second album until I've heard the whole thing. At this point I think I've exhausted every way of hyping this band on the site (short of reviewing any new releases they come out with).
