The Pyramids

The Pyramids are a spiritual afro-jazz ensemble that originally formed in 1971. The members met while attending AntiochCollege in Ohio. Originally featuring saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, flutist Margo Simmons, and bassist Kimathi Asante, thegroup eventually added several members, including various percussionists and, at one point, two bassists. Inspired by theavant-garde and spiritual leaders of the 1960s jazz scene, such as John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Sun Ra, and pianistCecil Taylor, the Pyramids mixed African rhythms, free jazz, and even a touch of psychedelic soul. The group touredextensively, relocated to San Francisco, and released three albums; Lalibela (1973), King of Kings (1974), and Birth,Speed, Merging (1976), before disbanding in 1977.
