Robbie Williams has been around for a while, he was part of the pop phenomenon that was Take That, as a member when in fact he was only a dancer who had no real impact on any of the musical aspects of the band. Some credit the break-up of Take That to Williams frustration at not being a pivotal member of the group.
Williams then set out to make his way as a solo performer, but he was in a bad way. He had been sighted looking extremely scruffy and distraught in public, reportedly had gained as much as 45kg in weight, and was letting drugs and alcohol ruin his life. Realising this, he checked himself into a rehab clinic in an attempt to discover himself and kick the drugs and alcoho.
A few years passed, and a new, refreshed Robbie Williams released the album Life Thru a Lens which surprised the fans of Take That, who had been expecting Williams sound to be a carbon copy of his former groups sound; and had instead been greeted by a man who had matured musically, releasing a top notch pop album which is popularly believed to have propelled Williams into the big tim.
With next album Ive Been Expecting You Williams moved further towards the pop end of the Pop-rock spectrum, with songs such as Win Some, Lose Some , Jesus in a Camper Van and a cover of Supergrass Grace. It also provided Williams with his first UK #1 Single Millenniumï¿.
The album Sing When Youre Winning provided Williams with his first problem breaking into the USA. The video for what was arguably the albums most important single was deemed not fit for viewing, apart from the non-reception Stateside, the album was very well received, especially in the UK where 2 of the albums singles reached number 1 status. He also recorded an album of classic Swing covers called Swing When youre Winning which also got a number 1 hit with Something Stupid a cover of the Frank and Nancy Sinatra classic, which he performed with actress Nicole Kidman.
The album Escapology was recorded after a fall out between Williams and long time collaborator, Guy Chambers; and would be the last Chambers would work with Williams. The album was Williams least successful to date, with critics calling it stale and generic pop despite this, the album still shifted singles from the shelves in the forms of Sexed Up and Feel.
3 years passed, and not a lot had been heard about Williams. People were unsure he would release another album, then Intensive Care was released in late 2005, with lead off single Trippin which showed Williams return to form.
