Nightwish
Power Metal

Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish wasformed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish wasformed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trainedopera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami V䮳k䬠and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debutalbum Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Tensingles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it topthe Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previousalbums in 2001 as well). Vanska would depart the group after Wishmaster was released, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Thegroup recruited none other than Marco Hietala (ex-Tarot, Sinergy) as their new bassist and male vocalist, and recorded the album CenturyChild in 2002. Century Child displayed a more symphonic side compared to their other albums, focusing more on atmosphere rather thanactual riffing. The album was an immense hit, going gold in Finland in just 2 hours. More touring followed, and the band convened in thestudio yet again to record what would become their most successful album, Once. Featuring a full orchestra and sweeping arrangements, thealbum fully brought the band's symphonic side full circle, and gained them an immense amount of fans. Sadly, in late 2005, the group andTarja parted ways. In late may 2007 the band finally hired a new singer, Swedish Anette Olzon. Dark Passion Play was released in lateSeptember and has proven to be an international success. « hide
