Native Texan Kelly Clarkson has, in just over three years, risen from complete unknown to one of pop's biggest names. She was launched to stardom as victor of the first 'American Idol' series in 2002 but, after a slump in sales after the hype had died down, she was forced to re-invent herself.
Coming off of the massively successful show, she released her first album, 'Thankful,' which contained the award winning single 'Miss Independent,' partially written by both Clarkson and Christina Aguilera, and the ballad which won her the show, 'Moment Like This.' While sales for both were huge at home and abroad, subsequent singles 'Low' and 'The Trouble With Love Is' failed to achieve the same heights, the latter failing even to penetrate the Top 100. She was quickly written off as a one-trick pony, a product of American Idol who would never maintain a career independent of the show.
It was clear a new direction was in order, as the adult contemporary angle was already wearing thin. As she tried to wrangle her way out of her Idol contract, she began recording a new record with a more rock-directed bent, in the vein of Avril Lavigne. In fact, the first single from the new album was written by Lavigne for her 'Under My Skin' but wasn't seen to fit with the rest of the record. 'Breakaway' was released as a single before the album of the same name, and was the first of 5 hit singles from the album, with 'Since U Been Gone,' 'Behind These Hazel Eyes,' 'Because Of You' and 'Walk Away' following over the subsequent twelve months.
Clarkson branched in a new direction with My December, seeking more creative independence. However, the album failed critically and was not well received by the public. Clarkson rebounded with the more energetic All I Ever Wanted in 2008. « hide |
