Hotwire's members met in high school; after recording a few demos, they scored slots opening for California dates of bands like Incubus, Linkin Park, Hoobastank, and Audiovent.They signed with RCA Records in December 2000, and released a four-track EP in 2002 before issuing their full-length Routine in the summer of 2003.
