Fishbone was founded in 1979 in South Central Los Angeles. Gaining notoriety with their live shows and unique blend of genres (funk, punk, reggae, and metal), Fishbone began to build a following. However, by 1987, the band had began to mix hardcore and metal aspects into the music, which led to 1988's Truth and Soul. The album was a success, and is still considered to be a classic. However, by 1987, the band had began to mix hardcore and metal aspects into the music, which led to 1988's Truth and Soul. The album was a success, and is still considered to be a classic. The secured a touring spot with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and gained national attention. But the best is still to come. Fishbone's 1991 masterpiece, The Reality of My Surroundings, was an instant success, and considered to be the band's best. After the band's fourth (and heaviest) album, Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe, the band began to fall apart. After losing several members due to different reasons, the band kept it together and recorded a few more albums, but none saw the success they had in the early '90s.
