Coming from California, Chain of Strength (CoS) were a band that formed during the late 80's with
members having background and implication in diverse underground hardcore-punk scene, notably
the fierce but always respectful and thoughtful frontman Curt Canales, who was the signer for
Ponoma's Trash-Punk outfit Malicious Intent. CoS was a cleaner and more focus departure from
Curt's former band but it retain all the aggressiveness and emotional outburst needed to be a
successful, albeit somewhat controversial, punk-hardcore band. While CoS were linked and often
refer to Youthcrew Straight-Edge movement, Curt and other band members were more inclined to
adopting a liberal and non-restrictive point of view on the lifestyle centered around self-respect for
the mind and the body rather than a strict "toxin" exclusive set of rules. While that stance has
drawn some criticisms from the movement purist, it has never really affected CoS message that
prone living a life axed toward reaching positive goals while dealing with regret and other socially
altering event for the good of your own person and social life. While some have put in doubt their
ideologies and integrity after their break-up (see this great interview for more details
http://naudforananswer.blogspot.com/2007/03/chain-of-strength.html) , the musical sincerity of
CoS has never been questioned. The whole musical architecture is build around classic punk and
hardcore guideline while adding a powerful emotional element to their roots rarely seen in the other
genre builder at that time such as Youth of Today, Sick of it all or Minor Threat. The result was a
refreshing, driven simple sound that evoke everything that playing and experiencing punk rock
should be: playing something that you believe in and having fun doing it while making sure it
reaches the listener (And make sure they go nuts during live performance, which were of a legendary
intensity). In this way of thinking, CoS were a perfect punk band. While their existence was short
lived (they broke up about 3 and a half year after starting), Chain of Strength has left a mark and
legacy few bands in one of the most extreme sub-genre of punk rock could ever dreamed of. Just see
more modern acts like Ex-Seattle's Champion if you need any proof. « hide |
