As a teenager in New York City, Brian Setzer harboured dreams of leading a big band with horns, but 'became sidetracked by punk.' In the early 80s he formed the Stray Cats, a rockabilly revival outfit , who achieved success as part of that decade's new wave movement, scoring hit singles 'Rock This Town' and 'Stray Cat Strut' and receiving much acclaim for his considerable talents as a guitarist.
After that group's demise, and an failed bid at solo success, Setzer put together a 17-piece big band for a short tour in 1990. The tour's unexpected success prompted the band to make the collaboration a permanent one and, in 1994, they released their first album, 'The Brian Setzer Orchestra,' and a second, 'Guitar Slinger,' in 1996, the latter produced by Joe Strummer.
The group's biggest moment came in 1998 with 'The Dirty Boogie' and its hit single 'Jump, Jive An' Wail,' a Louis Prima cover. Modern influences such as rock, hip-hop and dance began to pervade the band's signature sound, as they experimented on 2000's 'Vavoom!,' the band's last original release as of December 2005.
2 successful Christmas albums, 2002's 'Boogie Woogie Christmas' and 2005's 'Dig That Crazy Christmas' have also been released, aswell as a live CD and two live DVDs. « hide |
