Boowy

Boowy were a highly influential rock band from Japan. Forming in 1981, the group initially followed a simpler post-punk style, and also had a fairly-large lineup of six members. However, by 1983, Boowy trimmed down to their classic four-man lineup, and earned a tremendous cult following. In 1985, Boowy started to insert some new wave influences into their music, and, by 1986, literally exploded onto the Japanese mainstream. In 1985, Boowy started to insert some new wave influences into their music, and, by 1986, literally exploded onto the Japanese mainstream. Their fourth full length album, "Just a Hero", shot to number 5 on the Oricon charts, rocketing Boowy from relative obscurity to 80's rock icons. Their live album, "'Gigs' Just a Hero Tour 1986", and their follow-up 1986 album, "Beat Emotion", both topped the Japanese charts, with their live album eventually going on to sell over a million copies. Boowy arguably became the most well known rock band of the 1980's in Japan almost overnight, and their sixth and final official album, "Psychopath", also topped the charts, and it seemed that everyone, both old and young, were completely wooed by Boowy's musical charm. However, in 1988, Boowy made a shocking announcement that they were disbanding, right at the peak of their success. Their final albums, 1988's "Last Gigs" and "Singles", both reached number 1 on the Japanese charts, and each went on to sell over a million copies. Their legacy would continue on throughout the 1990's, when countless well known musicians called Boowy an influence, which included the likes of B'z, Glay, Spitz, Luna Sea and Buck-Tick. Although the group have been disbanded now for over two decades, Boowy still remain to be one of Japan's most beloved and recognized musical acts, regardless of age. « hide
