Before this time, Holst kept to himself, and remained a fairly uncomplicated figure within the early 20th century. However it was after his shell shock planets tribute, that he became well known for having a sound that hinted at the influences of late romantic composers such as Greig and Ravel, while also having a distinction of sound that resided within modern impressionism. Despite many only recognising his Planets suite, Holst composed over 200 pieces of music including concertos, operas, military marches, and even went about writing a symphony, however it was never completed. Holst died on May 25th, 1934 after having complications immediately after stomach surgery. « hide |
