Something For Kate formed in 1994, in Melbourne, Australia. Since then they have played numerous well received live shows as well as building up an extensive discography. The band to date have released 4 highly acclaimed studio albums and are presently recording their fifth, for release this year (2006).
The band are currently comprised of vocalist/guitarist Paul Dempsey, who in addition to playing with the band also performs a large number of solo acoustic shows and has also released an album entitled "An Empty Flight" under the name Scared Of Horses. Clint Hyndman makes up the percussion half of the rhythm section, with the Stephanie Ashworth (ex-Sandpit) on bass guitar. Previous bassists for the band were original bassist Julian Carroll, replaced in 1997 by Toby Ralph, who was then replaced by Stephanie Ashworth in March of 1998. While the band are considered a three-piece officially, they have made use of extra musicians in the past, including guitarist Wally Gunn on the Beautiful Sharks tour (1999), and after the release of Echolalia (2001), Pip Branson and Simon Bourke on keyboards and guitar, and a number of musicians to play string parts as required.
Something For Kate are known for reinventing their sound with each album they release, beginning with a heavier, almost grunge influenced sound during 1996-1997, culminating in the release of Elsewhere For Eight Minutes (1997), which was produced and mixed by Brian Paulson (known for previous work on albums with Wilco, Archers Of Loaf, Superchunk and Slint). This sound mellowed out into a relaxed indie rock sound for 1999's Beautiful Sharks, which spawned four singles and enjoyed great success with critics and fans alike, though it wouldn't be until the release of Echolalia in 2001 that the band would truly break into mainstream popularity with the single release of Monsters. This, theirr third studio album, saw the band again work with an acclaimed producer - this time it would be Trina Shoemaker, whose past work included Queens Of The Stone Age, REM, Whiskeytown and Sheryl Crow. Keeping up their established pace of one album every two years, the band released their fourth studio album, The Official Fiction, in 2003. This again saw the release of four singles, and like Echolalia, enjoyed a good deal of mainstream success. Building on this, the band would release the album internationally (to the US and European markets) in mid-2004. After filling a support slot on David Bowie's "Reality" tour, the band played a tour of their own, taking in Ireland, Denmark, France, Germany, Scotland and the UK before returning to Australia to release a two disc set of B-Sides and live bootlegs entitled Phantom Limbs. Additonal releases included the Big Screen Television VHS in 2000, a collection of 12 of the bands music videos, and a DVD entitled A Diversion in 2002, which contained music videos, live footage, and a documentary of the making/touring of the Echolalia album.
Over the course of their career, Something For Kate have enjoyed a loyal fan base earned through the high quality of their live shows and the distinctive originality of their material. The main creative force of the band, guitarist and singer Paul Dempsey, is known for the individuality of his vocals, lyrics, and guitar work, while the band as a whole have earned a reputation as excellent live performers, giving the band a well-rounded and highly developed sound that, combined with an extensive and acclaimed discography, has earned them a well deserved place on the Australian music scene. « hide |
