First formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Husker Du was at the forefront of a burgeoning independent music scene. Made up of guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart, the band was a powerful musical force. The band was named after an eponymous 50's Danish board game, which translates into, "Do you remember?" A typical Husker Du song could easily be described as, "A barricade of speed and sound." The band was named after an eponymous 50's Danish board game, which translates into, "Do you remember?" A typical Husker Du song could easily be described as, "A barricade of speed and sound." The band's first release, Land Speed Record, was fast and short with not much melody, but was a good document of the band at the time. Their second release was, Everything Falls Apart, showcased the traits that would eventually form one of the more successful independent bands of the decade. Mould and Hart, the bands dual songwriters and vocalists, often wrote punk songs that had traditional song structures to them, a formula that led to the success of their later albums. The first out-of-state band on California's SST Records, Husker Du first released the Metal Circus EP which firstshowed Husker Du's signs of greatness. After that they churned out three Masterpieces Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, and Flip Your Wig) in two years. After Flip Your Wig was released, the Huskers signed with Warner Bros. releasing the less-acclaimed Candy Apple Grey as their major-label debut. Tensions that had been growing steadily between Mould and Hart accelerated to their maximum on the tour supporting their last release, Warehouse: Songs and Stories which garnered better reviews than Candy Apple Grey. « hide |
