A proponent of the blue-eyed soul sound, Springfield first had success with her first single, "I Only Want to Be with You" in 1963. Springfield was also later credited for popularising American soul music in the UK, when she hosted The Sound Of Motown, a Ready Steady Go! special edition in 1965, featuring artists like The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.
