McLachlan is a consistent mainstay in the adult alternative genre. Highlight albums include Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, where she details her experiences working with World Vision, a Canadian-sponsored organization that made a documentary that centered on child prostitution, poverty, and famine in countries in Southeast Asia (most notably Cambodia and Thailand), and Surfacing, which is arguably her best album to date, both vocally and instrumentally.

Aside from her music, McLachlan may very well be best known for founding Lilith Fair. As a response to the male-oriented Lollapalooza, Sarah founded Lilith Fair to showcase women's musical achievements. As a result, the tour was a huge success: not just because the female artists could finally meet one another, but also in terms of funds. Lilith Fair raised over $700,000 in 1997, the year of its conception, and in excess of $850,000 the year after. $1.00 from each ticket sold was donated to charity. « hide
